The new game, Code Violet, is out now for the PlayStation 5, but critics haven’t been impressed. Many reviews suggest serious problems with the game itself, making its launch as the first PS5 exclusive of 2026 a disappointing one.
Code Violet is a dinosaur-themed action horror game inspired by the classic Dino Crisis. Originally planned for release on November 14th, the game was first delayed to December 12th to avoid coinciding with the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. TeamKill Media, the studio behind the game, then pushed the release back another month to address some final technical problems.
Code Violet Launches to Underwhelming Reviews
The game Code Violet was released this past Saturday, January 10th, and costs $49.99 or €49.99. Unfortunately, initial reviews haven’t been good. OpenCritic currently gives it a “Weak” rating with an average score of 44, placing it among the bottom 3% of all games reviewed on the site (as of January 11th). Critics have specifically criticized Code Violet for problems like flawed enemy AI, a confusing story, subpar animations, and uninspired shooting mechanics. It appears this first PlayStation exclusive of 2026 is shaping up to be a disappointing game.
Code Violet Early Reviews Overview
- OpenCritic Avg. Score: 44 / 100
- Labeled as “Weak” rating
- In the 3rd percentile of all OC ratings
- PlayStation Store Avg. User Score: 2.96 / 5
- Based on 1,900 reviews
Many recent reviews of Code Violet mention technical problems like glitches, crashes, and animation errors. Players have also found the shooting to feel floaty and unsatisfying, making combat clumsy and awkward. Beyond the weak impact of weapons, reviewers have criticized the enemy AI, noting that dinosaurs often behave strangely – they might gather aimlessly, stand frozen, or get stuck in corners. These issues ultimately detract from the game’s attempt to recreate the tense, survival-horror experience of Dino Crisis.
Critics also found the story of Code Violet unfocused and tonally inconsistent. Push Square pointed out a jarring contrast: the game starts with the main character in underwear, then sends her on a lengthy and illogical quest to find clothes, while also trying to present a serious narrative. This criticism is ironic considering TeamKill Media recently decided against a PC release, citing concerns about potentially offensive modifications (‘mods’) players might create.
Code Violet May Have Already Surpassed 100,000 Sales
Initial reviews of Code Violet heavily criticize the game’s camera, calling it awkward and difficult to use in the game’s tight spaces. While the game has some interesting story elements and looks good at times, the camera issues are a major problem. User reviews are a bit more positive than critic reviews, with an average rating of 2.96 stars from almost 2,000 PlayStation Store users. This number of reviews suggests the game has likely sold over 100,000 copies.
Even though Sony’s first PS5 game of 2026 didn’t make a big splash, there are still many exciting titles coming to the console. The next major PS5 exclusive is Saros, a sci-fi action game with roguelite elements, and it’s set to release on April 30th.
