23 Years Later, A Brand-New Hunter: The Reckoning Game Was Just Announced

The classic game series Hunter: The Reckoning is coming back to Xbox after a long hiatus! It was officially announced at the March 2026 Xbox Partner Preview, marking the first new installment in over 20 years. While details are limited so far, this new version, Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish, appears to be a grittier, more realistic take on the original’s supernatural themes, and will feature more in-depth RPG gameplay.

Teyon, the studio behind the popular RoboCop: Rogue City, is now bringing the World of Darkness universe to today’s gaming consoles. The original Hunter: The Reckoning games, released in 2003, were third-person action games focused on fighting monsters. However, the upcoming Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish is taking a different approach with first-person gameplay. This new game will also be a fresh start for the series, completely separate from the earlier games released in the 2000s. Teyon has shown they can successfully revive beloved franchises, as demonstrated by the positive reception to RoboCop: Rogue City.

A Gritty Return to the World of Darkness

During the Xbox Partner Preview on March 26th, Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish was unveiled. The trailer showed players will hunt and kill monsters in modern-day New York City. It highlighted the game’s improved graphics and new first-person view, even giving a glimpse of a vampire – a former police officer – that players will battle. Though still some time away, Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish is currently slated for release in Summer 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5. Xbox also announced that Super Meat Boy 3D will be available with Xbox Game Pass starting March 31st.

The reveal trailer for Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish showcases several locations beyond New York City. These include a secluded cabin, a gloomy graveyard, a wrecked bar covered in blood, and a damp, rundown industrial basement.

After announcing the game, Microsoft shared an interview with the game director of Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish, Piotr Łatocha, who offered more details about what players can expect. He explained that the game will blend a main story with a semi-open world, and player choices will lead to multiple different endings. There will also be optional side quests and opportunities for romance. Łatocha highlighted a detailed character creation system, allowing players to fully customize their character. He also mentioned that the game draws inspiration from popular sources like the TV show Supernatural, the game Baldur’s Gate 3, and Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines.

According to Łatocha, many developers working on the game are deeply familiar with the lore of the World of Darkness, even though he personally hasn’t played the tabletop games. The new game will be built on the latest, 5th edition of Hunter: The Reckoning. Players will join a Cell – a team of hunters who work together to take down powerful foes. Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish will use dice-roll skill checks, similar to those in Baldur’s Gate 3, and will incorporate a system of advantages and flaws.

After more than two decades of silence, Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish marks a major comeback for the series. While other World of Darkness games, like Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2, haven’t been successful, there’s still strong potential for video games based in this universe. Instead of just retreading old ground, the developers at Teyon are reimagining the series with a focus on creating a truly immersive experience that captures the dark and unsettling atmosphere of the World of Darkness.
