The Pokémon Company has created over a thousand unique designs, drawing inspiration from all sorts of sources. So it’s not surprising that more than 20 Pokémon are based on dinosaurs! Dinosaurs are simply cool, and with so many different species, each one can be incredibly unique.
Almost every generation of Pokémon games has included at least one dinosaur-like Pokémon, from Lapras to Arctibax, and it looks like that trend will continue for the foreseeable future. While it’s impossible to list them all, let’s explore the history of Pokémon to highlight some of the most iconic prehistoric creatures.
1. Lapras
Plesiosaur
- Type: Water/Ice
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Red & Blue (Generation 1)
- Best Move: Hydro Pump
- Level It Evolves: N/A
- Location In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Polar Biome, Tera Raid Battles (5★, 6★)
Lapras is a hugely popular Pokémon from the very first generation, largely because of its appealing look and strength in battles. Despite its popularity, though, many fans don’t often think about where its design actually came from.
Lapras was inspired by the Plesiosaur, a large, ancient reptile that lived in the oceans millions of years ago. Both Lapras and the Plesiosaur share similar features, like long necks, fins, and short tails, and they both have a bluish color.
Lapras’ Base Stats:
| HP: | 130 |
| Attack: | 85 |
| Defense: | 80 |
| Sp. Atk: | 85 |
| Sp. Def: | 95 |
| Speed: | 60 |
| Total: | 535 |
2. Groudon
Ankylosaurus
- Type: Ground (Regular Form), Ground/Fire (Primal Form)
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Ruby(Generation 3), Pokemon Omega Ruby (Generation 6) (Primal Form)
- Best Move: Eruption
- Level It Evolves: N/A
- Location In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Alfornada Cavern after receiving the Groudon Treat from Snacksworth (Only one)
Groudon’s backstory strongly suggests it’s a dinosaur, an ancient creature brought back to life. The conflict between Groudon and Kyogre, fighting for control of land and sea, draws inspiration from the biblical story of Behemoth and Leviathan. However, Groudon’s design is unique, combining features of a theropod dinosaur with the armored plates of an Ankylosaurus.
In Omega Ruby, Groudon gained a new form called Primal Groudon. This new form highlights the dinosaur inspiration behind the Pokémon, as the word “primal” is strongly linked to the prehistoric world of dinosaurs.
Groudon’s Base Stats:
| Normal Form | Primal Form | |
| HP: | 100 | 100 |
| Attack: | 150 | 180 |
| Defense: | 140 | 160 |
| Sp. Atk: | 100 | 150 |
| Sp. Def: | 90 | 90 |
| Speed: | 90 | 90 |
| Total: | 670 | 770 |
3. Rhydon
Theropod
- Type: Ground/Rock
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Red & Blue (Generation 1)
- Best Move: Horn Drill
- Level It Evolves: 42
- Location in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: Part of “Indigo Disk” DLC
Rhydon clearly takes inspiration from rhinoceroses, building on the design of its pre-evolution, Rhyhorn, which resembles a more angular version of the animal. But Rhydon stands on two legs, giving it a look similar to some theropod dinosaurs. Even the horn changes, making Rhydon less like a typical rhinoceros and more like a ceratopsian dinosaur.
As a Pokémon fan, I’ve always appreciated how the creators don’t just copy ideas. They take inspiration from lots of different places, and that’s what makes the designs so cool! They’ll clearly show what inspired a Pokémon, but still manage to make it feel totally new and original. Rhydon was one of the first Pokémon that really showed off this approach, and it’s something I’ve loved seeing ever since.
Rhydon’s Base Stats
| HP: | 105 |
| Attack: | 130 |
| Defense: | 120 |
| Sp. Atk: | 45 |
| Sp. Def: | 45 |
| Speed: | 40 |
| Total: | 485 |
4. Armaldo
Anomalocaris
- Type: Rock/Bug
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire (Generation 3)
- Best Move: X-Scissor
- Level It Evolves: level 40
- Location In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: N/A
Anorith is a Pokémon that evolves from a fossil – specifically, the Claw Fossil found in the Generation 3 games. Its design, and that of its evolved form, is based on the anomalocaris, an ancient, extinct sea creature. Essentially, Anorith is inspired by and resembles this fascinating animal.
Okay, so Armaldo’s design is pretty cool because it takes the whole ancient armor idea and actually makes it stand upright on two legs, like a dinosaur! It gives it a way more developed look. Honestly, its build reminds me a lot of Pokémon like Tyranitar, Aggron, and Groudon – they all seem to be based on those powerful, bipedal dinosaurs, the theropods.
Armaldo’s Base Stats:
| HP: | 75 |
| Attack: | 125 |
| Defense: | 100 |
| Sp. Atk: | 70 |
| Sp. Def: | 80 |
| Speed: | 45 |
| Total: | 495 |
5. Haxorus
Heterodontosaurus
- Type: Dragon
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Black & White (Generation 5)
- Best Move: Giga Impact
- Level It Evolves: level 38, then 48
- Location In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Tera Raid Battles, Evolve From Fraxure
Haxorus, a Dragon-type Pokémon, is the signature Pokémon of Iris, a main character and Gym Leader/Champion in the anime. Because Dragons are often inspired by dinosaurs, it’s no surprise Haxorus is based on the heterodontosaurus – a dinosaur whose name means “different toothed lizard.” The Pokémon designers took this a step further, giving Haxorus a jaw shaped like an axe – hence its nickname, the Axe Jaw Pokémon.
Haxorus is a powerful Pokémon known for its well-rounded abilities, but it really shines with its incredibly high Attack stat. This design choice is inspired by the heterodontosaurus, an ancient creature that used its teeth for combat – a trait reflected in the blade-like features on Haxorus’s face.
Haxorus’ Base Stats:
| HP: | 76 |
| Attack: | 147 |
| Defense: | 90 |
| Sp. Atk: | 60 |
| Sp. Def: | 70 |
| Speed: | 97 |
| Total: | 540 |
6. Nidoqueen
Therapod Dinosaur
- Type: Poison/Ground
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Red & Blue (Generation 1)
- Best Move: Superpower
- Level It Evolves: level 16, then when exposed to a Moon Stone
- Location In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: N/A
Nidoqueen’s design is a mix of different animals and creatures, primarily inspired by large monsters from Japanese science fiction. It combines features of rhinoceroses, gorillas, rabbits, porcupines, and even theropod dinosaurs. You can clearly see a resemblance to a T. Rex in Nidoqueen’s appearance, a trait it shares with other similar Pokémon.
Drill Pokemon are versatile fighters, able to learn moves from many different types, including Fighting, Fire, Electric, and Ice. This variety reflects its unique design. It can also learn Dragon-type moves like Outrage and Dragon Pulse, highlighting the dinosaur inspiration behind its appearance.
Nidoqueen’s Base Stats:
| HP: | 90 |
| Attack: | 92 |
| Defense: | 87 |
| Sp. Atk: | 75 |
| Sp. Def: | 85 |
| Speed: | 76 |
| Total: | 505 |
7. Nidoking
Therapod Dinosaur
- Type: Poison/Ground
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Red & Blue (Generation 1)
- Best Move: Megahorn
- Level It Evolves: level 16, then when exposed to a Moon Stone
- Location In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: N/A
Similar to Nidoqueen, Nidoking’s design draws inspiration from giant monsters, but it also incorporates features of rhinoceroses, gorillas, rabbits, porcupines, and meat-eating dinosaurs. However, Nidoking’s larger tail, prominent horn, and generally intimidating look give it a more dinosaur-like appearance.
If you took away Nidoking’s spiky ears, it’d honestly just look like a pretty typical dinosaur. As one of Giovanni’s go-to Pokémon from Team Rocket, it’s a classic and I’ve always loved it. That’s why I was so surprised it didn’t make the cut for Pokémon Scarlet & Violet – it really should have been included!
Nidoking’s Base Stats:
| HP: | 81 |
| Attack: | 102 |
| Defense: | 77 |
| Sp. Atk: | 85 |
| Sp. Def: | 75 |
| Speed: | 85 |
| Total: | 505 |
8. Aggron
Triceratops
- Type: Steel/Rock (Normal), Steel (Mega)
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire(Generation 3)
- Best Move: Double-Edge
- Level It Evolves: level 32, then 42
- Location In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: N/A
Aggron, like many strong Pokémon, is based on a legend – specifically, the Korean myth of Pulgasari, a creature known for eating iron. Its design also resembles a theropod dinosaur, and the three horns on its head are reminiscent of the famous triceratops.
As a huge Pokémon fan, I’ve always thought Aggron was a really cool design! It clearly takes inspiration from armored dinosaurs – you can totally see that in its look. And it makes sense, considering how tough it is in battle! When Aggron Mega Evolves, it’s like that armor goes into overdrive! It gets completely covered in steel, and it actually loses its Rock typing, becoming pure Steel. It’s a seriously powerful transformation!
Aggron’s Base Stats:
| Normal | Mega | |
| HP: | 70 | 70 |
| Attack: | 110 | 140 |
| Defense: | 180 | 230 |
| Sp. Atk: | 60 | 60 |
| Sp. Def: | 60 | 80 |
| Speed: | 50 | 50 |
| Total: | 530 | 630 |
9. Dracovish
Stegosaurus
- Type: Water/Dragon
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Sword & Shield (Generation 8)
- Best Move: Dragon Rush
- Level It Evolves: N/A
- Location In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: N/A
Dracovish is a unique Pokémon created by combining two different fossils: the Fossilized Drake and the Fossilized Fish. The ‘Drake’ fossil is what gives Dracovish its dinosaur-like qualities.
Dracovish’s lower body resembles a Stegosaurus, but with the plates flipped so they run along its underside. Like other ancient Pokémon introduced in Generation 8, the original, un-fossilized form of Dracovish exists somewhere in the Pokémon world, though it hasn’t appeared in any of the games yet.
Dracovish’s Base Stats:
| HP: | 90 |
| Attack: | 90 |
| Defense: | 100 |
| Sp. Atk: | 70 |
| Sp. Def: | 80 |
| Speed: | 75 |
| Total: | 505 |
10. Arctozolt
Dromaeosauridae & Plesiosaur
- Type: Electric/Ice
- Game Introduced: Pokemon Sword & Shield(Generation 8)
- Best Move: Blizzard
- Level It Evolves: N/A
- Location In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: N/A
Similar to Dracovish, Arctozolt is a Pokémon created by combining the Fossilized Bird and the Fossilized Dino, both of which relate to dinosaurs. Its upper body seems to be modeled after a dromaeosaurid, often thought of as a velociraptor, and scientists believe these dinosaurs had feathers and are ancestors of today’s birds.
This unusual Pokémon has a unique design: its lower body resembles a prehistoric marine reptile like a plesiosaur, mosasaur, or ichthyosaur. This combination creates a really interesting creature! It’s too bad players might never encounter the actual fossils of these creatures within a Pokémon game.
Arctozolt’s Base Stats:
| HP: | 90 |
| Attack: | 100 |
| Defense: | 90 |
| Sp. Atk: | 90 |
| Sp. Def: | 80 |
| Speed: | 55 |
| Total: | 505 |
