28 Days Later creator set to write & direct Elden Ring movie

Following several weeks of speculation, it’s now officially true that Alex Garland is taking on the task of adapting Elden Ring for a movie, bringing the highly acclaimed video game by FromSoftware to life on the silver screen.

Previously, games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne from FromSoftware were successful, but Elden Ring surpassed that success significantly. In a short amount of time, it rose to become one of the top-selling games of all time, as countless gamers embarked on their journeys through the Lands Between.

Due to its immense popularity, we’re even seeing a feature film based on it now. Ever since the concept of an adaptation was proposed, the developers from Japan have finally agreed and granted A24 permission to transform Elden Ring into a motion picture.

Apart from this, it’s also worth mentioning that Alex Garland, an esteemed author and director recognized for works such as 28 Days Later, Ex Machina, and more recently, Civil War and Warfare, has taken on a new project. Interestingly, Garland is a strong advocate for the gaming industry and now plans to bring one of the most significant games from recent times to life on screen.

Elden Ring movie officially moving ahead

Earlier in the year, there were whispers about it, but on May 22, 2025, A24 officially announced their intentions to produce an Elden Ring movie. Director Guillermo del Toro (Garland) will be penning and directing the film, adapting the original content from FromSoft, in collaboration with Game of Thrones’ creator George R. R. Martin.

I’ve been thrilled to witness George R.R. Martin, the mastermind behind the intricate worlds of Westeros, lay the foundations for the enchanting narrative that is Elden Ring. He’s meticulously crafted the history, characters, and lore that serve as the backbone of this captivating tale. It seems like he can’t get enough of weaving stories, even when it comes to delaying the completion of his series of novels. Remarkably, Martin is also involved in a producing role for the upcoming Elden Ring film, ensuring that the silver screen adaptation stays true to the spirit of his imaginative universe.

In these initial stages, we can’t predict exactly what the live-action movie will be like. Similar to other Souls-like games, Elden Ring is filled with fantastical creatures and colossal bosses, and it leaves many of its stories shrouded in vague descriptions for players to interpret as they explore.
