Square Enix recently surprised gamers by making the original Final Fantasy 7 available on GOG (Good Old Games). This brings the classic game to a new audience almost 30 years after it first launched on PlayStation. This version includes some helpful improvements and is currently on sale for a limited time.
First released in Japan in January 1997, Final Fantasy 7 was a groundbreaking game for the Final Fantasy series – it was the first to use 3D graphics and appear on a console other than Nintendo. The game follows Cloud Strife, a former soldier, as he becomes involved in a battle to save the planet. He and his friends face opposition from the powerful Shin-Ra Electric Power Company and a formidable warrior named Sephiroth. Final Fantasy 7 is famous for its surprising plot twists, and one shocking moment remains particularly memorable for players. The story is now being revisited in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, with the final installment still in production.
Final Fantasy 7 Has Arrived on GOG
A beloved classic, Final Fantasy 7, is now available on PC through GOG.com for a limited-time price of $4.79 until March 8th, after which it will return to its regular price of $11.99. This version is DRM-free, meaning you won’t need an internet connection or activation code to play it after you buy it. Developed by Square Enix and FINE Co., Ltd., this updated port includes quality-of-life improvements found in other recent versions, such as a 3x speed mode, the option to disable random encounters, autosaving, and a battle enhancement mode that lets you quickly restore HP, MP, and your Limit gauge during fights.

Final Fantasy 7’s New Features

When Final Fantasy 7 launched on GOG, a new version was also released on Steam with the same updates. This meant the original 2013 Steam version was removed from sale. However, anyone who previously purchased the 2013 version automatically received the new version as a free download and can still access it. The old 2013 version remains available for those who already own it. It’s currently unclear how well the new version will support mods compared to the 2013 release.
GOG’s Final Fantasy Catalog is Currently Discounted
With the addition of Final Fantasy 7, a total of five Final Fantasy games are now available on GOG. Final Fantasy 3D Remake, Final Fantasy 4 3D Remake, Final Fantasy 8 Remastered, and Final Fantasy 9 are also available. GOG is currently offering a 60% discount on all Final Fantasy titles until March 8th, bringing the price of each game to $33.95 before taxes. Because each game features a different combat system, this is a great chance for new players to experience the series.
Similar to the Steam version, Final Fantasy 7 on GOG doesn’t require a powerful computer to run. You’ll only need 8 GB of RAM, a four-core processor, and a graphics card comparable to or better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti. As Final Fantasy 7 approaches its 30th anniversary in 2027, and with the final part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake currently being developed, it’s exciting to wonder what Square Enix has planned for the remainder of 2026.
