2K and 31st Union Announce New Hero Shooter “Project Ethos”

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must admit that the announcement of Project Ethos left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Don’t get me wrong, the concept sounds intriguing – an extraction mode combined with roguelike elements is certainly a tantalizing proposition. However, the initial reception and IGN’s preview suggest that it might not be the genre-defying experience we’ve been yearning for.

2K Games and the 31st Union studio unveiled their latest offering, a free-to-play third-person action game centered around heroic character extractions in shooter format titled “Project Ethos.

As a devoted follower of Project Ethos, I’m thrilled about the primary game mode they’ve got planned. This immersive experience will have us scavenging for resources, engaging in intense battles, and strategically extracting to secure victory. It’s all about survival and cunning, making every moment count!

Based on IGN’s hands-on experience, the game appears not to break new ground significantly in either the roguelike or extraction shooter genres. During my preview, I had an opportunity to play six distinct characters, each with unique skills and weaponry as anticipated.

In this game, there are 27 distinct power-ups (or advantages) available. At the start, players can choose one out of three power-ups for their character. As the game progresses, players can accumulate up to nine unique power-ups, which introduces the “roguelike” aspect, where the gameplay changes dynamically as you go along.

According to the IGN review, “Project Ethos offers an entertaining and smooth gameplay experience by effectively incorporating loot gathering and roguelike elements. However, upon initial observation, it seems that it doesn’t offer something fresh or compelling enough for players to eagerly replay it multiple times.

At the unveiling of the game, players initially expressed dissatisfaction with the announcement, labeling it as “yet another extraction game.” Some players also voiced their criticism towards the game’s artistic design, a style that has been increasingly popular in recent times for various reasons.

Project Ethos is 31st Union’s first game since it formed in 2019.
