2K Confirms It’s Making “A College Basketball Experience”

2K Sports has re-entered the college basketball video game industry following EA Sports’ decision to step away from game development. On Thursday evening, 2K Sports made an announcement about their intentions.

2K confirmed through social media that they are developing a college basketball experience with over 100 teams from various parts of the nation, ranging from top-tier powerhouses to inspiring underdogs. Their strategy emphasizes competition at every level, ensuring that partner schools, student-athletes, and players all gain from this endeavor.

Exciting update! You won’t need to wait much longer before your preferred colleges appear in our game. We’re brimming with ideas for the year 2027 and beyond, and there are even a few exciting previews scheduled for early 2026. Over the years, we’ve consistently shown the high standard of basketball gaming we can offer, and we’re eager to replicate that same level of excellence in college basketball.

How College Basketball 2K Got Here

The journey leading up to this stage has been quite unusual for college basketball and 2K Sports. Originally, Electronic Arts (EA) had a proposed plan selected by the College Licensing Company (CLC), which aimed to create a game encompassing all Division 1 men’s and women’s college basketball programs. This game was scheduled for release in 2028; however, schools demonstrated reluctance towards embracing the exclusivity arrangement.

Initially, it was revealed that 2K was exerting more efforts to secure licenses. Instead of merely offering Downloadable Content (DLC) featuring college teams for the NBA 2K series, the company, Take-Two Interactive, decided to develop a complete standalone game instead.

2K currently has an existing deal with UCLA, and they hint at further collaborations on the horizon. It will be intriguing over the next few months and beyond to find out which educational institutions and leagues 2K might strike partnerships with.

According to earlier reports by TopMob, as many as 2K sources indicated that a new game could potentially be released by 2027. Now, it seems this timeline may indeed hold true based on recent statements from 2K. Furthermore, rumors suggest that if the initial game is successful, they plan to incorporate all Division 1 programs into the game in the future. However, this could be subject to change given its far-off release date.
