With recent discussions about potential layoffs at Riot Games, the company shared updates and future plans for its game, 2XKO, to show players it remains a priority. The development of 2XKO has been a lengthy and sometimes unpredictable process. Things started looking promising in 2025 when Riot announced a PC release date of October 7th, and the game later became available on PlayStation and Xbox in January 2026.
Just weeks after the launch of the 2XKO console game, things took an unexpected turn. Players enjoyed the game’s feel and gameplay, but Riot Games announced that it wasn’t performing well enough to justify maintaining such a large development team. As a result, around 80 2XKO developers – half of the team – were laid off. This news worried players, who feared the game might be cancelled so soon after its release. However, it doesn’t seem like 2XKO is being discontinued.
2XKO Reveals Upcoming Plans and Characters
Shaun Rivera recently shared a blog post detailing Riot Games’ plans for the future of their game. The post gave fans a look at both upcoming and long-term developments. As with all fighting games, characters are key, and while some were initially surprised by the limited number of playable champions at launch in 2XKO, Riot is committed to adding more with each new season.
Caitlin was the first champion added during season one of 2XKO, but Riot Games quickly previewed Akali and Senna as the next two characters coming to the game. Akali was a particularly popular request among fans – she’s a ninja-like character from the Runeterra world known for her speed and agility, using weapons like kunai and kusarigama to quickly move and attack.
Senna is a new character who fights with a powerful relic gun and the abilities of light and shadow. She can attack from a distance with the gun, but also quickly close in on opponents using a wraith-like form for close-range combat, creating a versatile playstyle. The developers also noted that both Senna and the previously revealed character are still being worked on, and more details will be shared soon.
I was so excited to read the latest blog post! Besides the new champion reveals, they gave us a peek at what the team’s been working on. They’re tackling frustrating issues like screen tearing on consoles in 2XKO, which is awesome. It sounds like they’re really leaning into what makes 2XKO special – that Duo Play mechanic. They’re even planning a local version so you can play couch co-op with a friend before heading online! They also said they’re not simplifying the complex skill ceiling – they want to keep each character feeling unique and powerful, but also make sure everyone understands what each champion is good at and where they struggle. And finally, they’re committed to supporting the game with tournaments and building up the community, which is fantastic to hear!

The recent news is reassuring for players concerned about the future of 2XKO after the company announced layoffs. However, many are still trying to understand how the game faced these challenges so soon after release. While some suggest the marketing could have been better, a common complaint is the price of cosmetic items, an issue players also see in other Riot Games like Valorant and League of Legends.
Image via Riot Games Since Riot Games offers its games for free, it relies on other revenue streams, primarily through cosmetic items and seasonal passes. Players of the new game, 2XKO, are already expressing frustration with the cost of these items. Character skins generally cost around $20, and bundles can be much more expensive – the Season 1 Arcade Megabundle, for example, costs $80. Even popular skins based on the Arcane Netflix series, for characters like Vi, Jinx, and Ekko, are locked behind a $100 Starter Bundle.
