As a lifelong fan of Doctor Who, it feels like Christmas came early this year! I remember vividly watching the very first episode back in 1963, and now, six decades later, we’re getting new stories featuring some of the original cast members!
Three original actors from the initial “Doctor Who” series are set to return. This talented threesome will feature in the upcoming spin-off productions of the Doctor Who franchise.
The classic British science fiction show known as Doctor Who made its debut on November 23, 1963, and after six decades of airing, it continues to thrive, preparing for another significant anniversary coming up soon. Four fresh spinoffs are currently being developed, with three actors from the original series set to appear in them.
Big Finish Productions is creating four fresh spinoffs for the Doctor Who series within their Companion Chronicles collection. Recently, they unveiled a new box set titled Families, which features stories revolving around the early escapades of the First Doctor, played by William Hartnell. Given that this era’s cast members are involved, it’s no shock that Carole Ann Ford, Maureen O’Brien, and Peter Purves will reprise their roles as Susan Foreman, Vicki, and Steven Taylor respectively. Additionally, Stephen Noonan and Lauren Cornelius will take on the characters of the Doctor and Dodo Chaplet. Dominic G. Martin, speaking to Digital Spy, expressed his excitement for the stories written for Susan, Vicki, and Stephen by the skilled original actors and looks forward to everyone’s enjoyment as they continue the Companion Chronicles journey!
In the initial escapade, titled “The Temple of Light,” we find Vicki in a completely alien culture that she’s never encountered before. This tale takes place when time itself has stood still and the Tardis has become frozen solid. The second adventure is called “Stardust and Ashes” and focuses on Susan, who relives an old event where she and her traveling companions found themselves under the control of artificial intelligence. Susan will impart the wisdom she gained from this experience. In another tale, Steven finds himself in medieval times, landing with the Doctor in Normandy and preparing for a voyage to England. However, their journey won’t be easy as Steven becomes ensnared in a case of mistaken identity. Lastly, “The Y Factor” sees Dodo (previously portrayed by Jackie Lane) and the Doctor battling an “alien fungus” that can manipulate thoughts, making their struggle all the more difficult.
Given that each of the four spinoffs revolve around the adventures of the First Doctor, it seems fitting to include characters from the original Doctor Who series. Of all, Ford’s story promises to be particularly emotional as she plays Susan, the Doctor’s granddaughter and first companion. It’s intriguing to revisit their adventures together because they share a familial bond, and Susan brings out a unique side of the Doctor. In fact, Susan significantly influences the Doctor’s interactions with humans. The Y Factor featuring Dodo promises an engaging plotline as it seems to involve a mental challenge. Additionally, since the original Dodo passed away in 2021, Cornelius’ portrayal of the character is something worth looking forward to. This spinoff appears to be a response to Ford’s wish to rejoin the franchise for its 60th-anniversary special. Ford is currently the sole surviving main cast member from the original series.
