30 Years Later, Sonic & Knuckles is a Reminder of the Echidna’s Legacy

30 Years Later, Sonic & Knuckles is a Reminder of the Echidna's Legacy

As a seasoned gamer with memories of countless controllers and endless hours spent in front of the trusty old Genesis, I can wholeheartedly say that Sonic & Knuckles stands tall among the pantheon of great games, not just as an extension of Sonic 3, but as a unique experience in its own right.

Apart from being a significant part of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”, the game “Sonic & Knuckles” stands out independently due to its unique qualities. Even today, it’s widely recognized as one of the exceptional titles in the series for several reasons. Not only does it wrap up the story that “Sonic 3” started, but it ingeniously navigated the storage limitations of the Sega Genesis by employing lock-on cartridges, allowing the complete saga to be experienced. It served as a fantastic platform to offer a fresh perspective on the narrative that “Sonic 3” was striving to convey while concluding the first “Sonic” game with a comprehensive narrative within its gameplay. Players have the opportunity to play as Knuckles the Echidna, who was previously a villain in “Sonic 3”, across multiple “Sonic” titles through “Sonic & Knuckles”.

In many aspects, Knuckles, a notable figure in the Sonic universe, continues to grapple with the deceptions Dr. Eggman (also known as Dr. Ivo Robotnik) initially planted in him. Often criticized for his credulity, which can sometimes border on naivety, Knuckles has been subjected to ridicule, particularly in series like Sonic Boom, much to the dismay of his loyal fans. Yet, it’s his past that lends depth to this character – he was one of the earliest characters in the series to exhibit complex traits. His transformation from enemy to friend mirrors Sonic’s journey, and he wasn’t the only one to do so. The events of Sonic 3 marked a significant turning point not just for the Sonic franchise, but also for Knuckles, as it was his first appearance in a playable lock-on cartridge, paving the way for other iconic characters to follow suit.

How Sonic & Knuckles Changed the Sonic Franchise Going Forward

Sonic & Knuckles is a Testament to Sega and Sonic Team’s Innovative Qualities

In most instances, a Sonic game doesn’t surpass Sonic Team’s initial plan like Sonic 3 & Knuckles did. The developers initially intended to keep the game whole, but eventually decided it was advantageous for several reasons. One of these reasons was marketing strategies, but they also discovered that dividing the games would enable Knuckles to maintain his distinctive paths in Sonic 3, which wouldn’t fit on the cartridge otherwise. This division allowed players to glide and climb through stages as the echidna for the first time ever, though only those with the lock-on cartridge could experience this, as it also revealed Knuckles being betrayed by Dr. Eggman and becoming Sonic’s ally from then on.

It’s important to note that although Sonic 3 & Knuckles is often regarded as a single comprehensive game today, it’s crucial not to overlook the fact that Sonic & Knuckles offers a distinct gaming experience. The lock-on cartridge wasn’t merely an addition that made Sonic 3 complete for all three playable characters; it also enabled players to control Knuckles within Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Knuckles’ Past Helped Define the Future of Sonic’s Friends

In the game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, narrative elements are conveyed primarily through stage transitions and occasional cutscenes, since it didn’t use dialogue to tell its story. Players could gain additional context from the game’s manuals at the time. By observing Knuckles’ sprites in Sky Sanctuary before and during the battle with Sonic, players can discern that he feels regretful and drained after the fight. However, he appears grateful when the Master Emerald is restored and Angel Island floats again during the True Ending of Sonic & Knuckles. This marks one of the first instances of character redemption in the Sonic franchise; a theme that later reappears in stories like Shadow the Hedgehog’s alliance with Sonic in the eleventh hour of Sonic Adventure 2.

It’s worth mentioning how significant Knuckles’ impact on plot points and future characters has been, especially on the anniversaries of the games featuring him, which broke new ground. Unfortunately, the 30th anniversary of Knuckles, the Echidna, hasn’t received much fanfare, with only a commemorative comic and a controversial six-episode series as celebration. Contrastingly, 2024 has been labeled as “The Year of Shadow,” despite Sonic 3 & Knuckles playing a crucial role in the storyline. This may seem disappointing to fans of Rad Red, but there’s an argument that Sonic Frontiers, over the past two years, has given more attention to Knuckles by developing his character according to fan demands, suggesting that his resurgence might have come sooner than anticipated.
