3DS Systems Are Getting More Expensive

In 2025, Nintendo 3DS consoles have become surprisingly expensive, with some models selling for close to $400. Surprisingly, used 3DS consoles are now costing more than the newer Nintendo Switch in some cases.

The Nintendo 3DS, which came out in early 2011, was the next generation of the popular Nintendo DS. It could play most games made for the older DS system. As the name suggests, the 3DS offered glasses-free 3D graphics, and players could adjust the 3D effect using a slider. It also introduced a new analog stick-like control called the Circle Pad. The 3DS originally cost $250, but after slow sales and some criticism, Nintendo lowered the price to $170. Over its lifetime, several updated versions were released, including the New Nintendo 3DS XL for $199. Ultimately, the 3DS family of handhelds sold about 75.9 million units worldwide.

Used Nintendo 3DS Prices Are Rising Quickly

Even though Nintendo stopped making the 3DS in 2021 after 10 years, used consoles are now selling for more than they originally cost. One Twitter user, Pirat Nation, noted that a New Nintendo 3DS XL can cost anywhere from $200 to $350 depending on how well it’s been kept. While prices are getting close to the cost of a Switch 2, the 3DS is still generally more affordable. The online store for the 3DS closed in April 2024, but you can still play games you buy in stores, and it can even play older Nintendo DS games.

Considering the recent increase in 3DS prices, it’s helpful to compare them to other Nintendo consoles. A new Nintendo Switch currently costs $340. Nintendo raised the Switch’s price to $340 in August 2025 from $299 due to tariffs imposed by the US government on goods from countries like China and Vietnam. Right now, refurbished New Nintendo 3DS XL systems are selling for $379 at GameStop – the same price applies to special edition 3DS XL bundles that include console skins featuring games like Pokemon Sun and Moon, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. While some 3DS versions are now more expensive than a new Switch, they’re still cheaper than the expected $450 price of the Switch 2.

What Makes the Nintendo 3DS So Popular Among Fans?

The 3DS remains popular largely because of its impressive collection of unique, high-quality games. Even though Nintendo no longer officially supports the system, many people still enjoy it, especially those who like to modify their consoles. These modified 3DS systems can do things the original console couldn’t, like run different games and apps. For instance, a gamer recently showed how to stream and play Assassin’s Creed Shadows on a 3DS, using another console or a PC to actually run the game. While there are some limitations, the possibilities for modified 3DS consoles are constantly expanding.

Certain 3DS games have become quite valuable, especially rare titles. For example, a copy of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire together can sell for around $1,169 – more than three times the price of a new Nintendo 3DS XL. Even though the Switch 2 is expected to be Nintendo’s most popular product in 2026, many gamers still appreciate and collect 3DS games.
