4 Ways Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo Failed As A Sequel

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is the next installment from the creator of the popular series, Jujutsu Kaisen. Taking place 68 years after the events of the Shinjuku Shodown arc, Modulo features a brand new group of characters, moving away from the original cast including Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, and Nobara Kogisaki.

I’ve been following Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, and it’s been a really captivating read. The story centers around Tsurugi and Yuka Okkotsu, the grandchildren of Yuta and Maki, and introduces this interesting alien race called the Simurians. Two Simurians, Maru and Cross, quickly become key characters as well. Gege clearly crafted a fantastic story – it’s incredibly exciting! Like most stories though, it wasn’t perfect. As a continuation of the original, it really emphasized the themes and plot points we already knew, but unfortunately, a lot of things didn’t get the satisfying resolution they deserved.

4. Failed To Give A Conclusion To Dabura Vs Mahoraga

The Biggest Battle Left Unresolved

A major weakness of the JJK Modulo storyline near its conclusion was its handling of the aftermath of the massive battle between Mahoraga and Dabura. The story built to a showdown between Yuka Okkotsu and Dabura Karaba, with the fate of humanity at stake. Yuka quickly summoned the incredibly powerful Divine General Mahoraga using her 10 Shadows Technique and sent him into battle against Dabura.

The fight between Mahoraga and Dabura was incredibly thrilling, showcasing both fighters’ impressive resilience and ability to adjust. Dabura, in particular, pushed himself to new limits, finding creative ways to use his cursed technique, even developing skills like Reverse Cursed Technique and Cursed Technique Reversal. He even managed to create a Domain Expansion! Sadly, all of this progress was for nothing, as the fight was cut short. Maru intervened with his own cursed technique, removing Dabura and his sister from the battle and sending them back to Simuria, where they were never seen again. This abrupt ending is considered one of the most frustrating in Jujutsu Kaisen, and it’s a particularly disappointing fate for the character of Dabura.

3. Failed To Give Yuji Itadori A Good Role

Yuji Only Served As A Plot Device For Maru’s Technique

The final arc of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo brought Yuji Itadori back, and he quickly focused on ending the conflict between humans and Simurians. He aimed to do this by working with Maru to find a way to eliminate Cursed Spirits entirely. However, this storyline ultimately fell short of expectations. Yuji’s actions resulted in both humans and Simurians losing most of their Cursed Energy, leaving them with very limited power. At the same time, the birth of new Cursed Spirits was drastically reduced to just a few each year.

Yuji Itadori’s role in the story felt like simply a way to move Maru’s plot forward. After giving Maru the necessary information, Yuji’s part was done. Even more surprisingly, the adult version of Yuji was shown to be drastically different. While character development is expected, Yuji had completely isolated himself from his friends and society, becoming cynical and misinterpreting Gojo’s guidance – even refusing to protect future generations. Many fans anticipated a final battle between Yuji and Dabura Karaba, but this never happened. Yuji’s powers were barely showcased, leaving readers disappointed with his limited contribution to the Modulo series.

2. Couldn’t Flesh Out All Events It Set Up

Too Rushed Of A Conclusion

The main weakness of JJK Modulo is that it didn’t have enough length to properly resolve most of the storylines it introduced. Although the writing quality was good, the ending felt very hurried. Battles were abruptly cut short, and important plot points were skipped over entirely. For example, the fight between Dabura and Mahoraga deserved a few more chapters of development, even if it wasn’t fully completed then. Likewise, Dabura obtaining the Black Rope could have been a standalone chapter with a greater emotional effect.

The story could have benefited from spending more time developing Yuji Itadori’s entrance into the conflict and Maru’s rescue of Usami, Yuka, Tsurugi, and his brother. The connection between humans and Simurians also felt underdeveloped; a slower pace would have allowed readers to fully grasp its importance. Ultimately, these elements felt rushed because of the issues with Maru’s cursed technique, which the author then used as a convenient way to move the plot forward. This was the main weakness of an otherwise excellent series, JJK Modulo.

1. Too Many Death Fakeouts

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Didn’t Deliver On Deaths

A challenge for the JJK Modulo arc was the use of fake deaths. Author Gege Akutami is known for being willing to kill off characters, even those fans might expect to survive. For example, Junpei was killed off quickly, despite seeming like a potential major character, and Nanami, a very important character, also died relatively early in the story. Even Gojo Satoru, a central figure, met a sudden end. This demonstrates that Akutami isn’t hesitant to eliminate even key characters.

Interestingly, in JJK Modulo, the author Gege seemed reluctant to let characters die, even after clearly establishing the circumstances for their deaths. For example, Cross, Maru’s brother, was shot in the chest, and it appeared he wouldn’t survive, even with the powerful Reverse Cursed Technique. However, two months later, Maru managed to save him using Idle Transfiguration. Considering everything, Cross really shouldn’t have lived.

Yuka, like others, was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and her condition was made much worse by a magical vow she’d made. Fortunately, Maru was able to save her using a power called Idle Transfiguration, which he’d learned from Mahito. Tsurugi also received a life-threatening injury, but Maru’s technique saved him again. Usami was badly hurt in a fight with Dabura, and Maru saved him as well. It started to seem like Maru’s ability could solve any problem, and the sense of danger and suspense the author, Gege, had carefully created quickly disappeared.

It’s understandable that Yuka and Tsurugi needed to survive for the story to work. However, the way Cross and Usami were almost dead for so long, then suddenly recovered at the last minute, felt like an unsatisfying shortcut. If the author had maintained his previous approach of letting characters die, the ending would have had a much stronger impact.
