Anime is famous for its incredible partnerships. Whether it’s enemies who become friends or instant connections forged through tough times, the medium boasts many unforgettable duos, and fans often have their own favorites. Even decades after their first appearance, Goku and Vegeta from Dragon Ball are still incredibly popular. Their relationship is inspiring because of Goku’s unwavering heroism and Vegeta’s journey from villain to hero. They challenged each other to improve as rivals, and as friends, they share the unique pressure of being the last of their races.
While some anime couples are incredibly popular, many other fantastic duos deserve recognition. Five pairings, in particular, stand out. These characters come together in different ways – some are close friends, others are rivals, and some fight to stay together against difficult odds. Regardless of their journey, they’re all among the most cherished teams in the anime world.
Gon & Killua (Hunter x Hunter)
-
Since 1998, the manga series Hunter x Hunter has followed the exciting adventures of Hunters – individuals who track down treasures, capture criminals, discover rare creatures, and battle dangerous monsters. The story centers around Gon and Killua, who become fast friends while taking the challenging Hunter exam. Despite their different personalities and perspectives, they quickly bond through intense training and impressive abilities, proving that opposites often make the best of friends.
Killua initially seems like a playful kid, but he’s actually a highly trained and dangerous assassin, raised from birth to kill. He wants to escape his family’s violent lifestyle, so he teams up with Gon on his search for his father. As they travel together, Gon and Killua become very close friends, and their strong bond has made them beloved characters for almost 30 years.
Yugi & Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
I’ve been a huge Yu-Gi-Oh fan for years, and it’s amazing how popular it still is! The card game really took off and has a dedicated player base to this day. While there have been several anime series based on the original manga from 1996, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series from 2000 is definitely my favorite. With over 220 episodes, it’s where I first met Yugi, the passionate duelist, and his iconic rival, Kaiba. They’re total opposites with different motivations, but their clashes are just so captivating! Despite being rivals, you can really see a level of respect between them by the end of the show – it’s a great dynamic.
Yugi possesses the Millennium Necklace, which contains the spirit of Atem, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Atem appears during card games to help Yugi win. Both Yugi and Atem are driven by strong values like friendship and honor, contrasting with Kaiba, who is primarily focused on achieving personal glory as a Duel Monsters player, even if it means defeating others. Despite their differences, Yugi and Kaiba will put aside their rivalry and work together when facing a powerful, shared enemy – they both recognize each other’s skill and strength.
Kageyama & Hinata (Haikyu!!)
Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama are classic rivals, with a history that drives much of the story in the anime series Haikyu. Their relationship explores what can happen when someone strives to reach the level of a player they admire. Hinata first became passionate about volleyball after seeing a game on television, but he faces challenges as he’s relatively short and lacks experience.
Hinata trains tirelessly, determined to find teammates who can help him improve. During his last middle school tournament, his team suffers a crushing defeat at the hands of a team led by the incredibly talented Tobio Kageyama, known as the ‘King of the Court.’ To his surprise, Hinata and Kageyama end up attending the same high school and are forced to play on the same volleyball team. Initially, they struggle to cooperate, but they eventually learn to overcome their differences, motivating each other to grow and forming a formidable partnership as setter and spiker.
Lelouch & Suzaku (Code Geass)
When Lelouch Lamperouge’s mother is murdered by someone within the Britannian royal family, he vows revenge against the empire. Lelouch is known as one of the smartest characters in anime, and he possesses a special ability called Geass – the power to control anyone he makes eye contact with. Although focused on his mission, Lelouch isn’t completely isolated, as his childhood friend, Suzaku, often prevents him from abusing this power. Suzaku is also working towards change, but believes in reforming the system from the inside, making them reluctant allies who must both carry the weight of their choices.

Watching Lelouch and Suzaku, I always felt they had a connection unlike any other. He truly seemed to only ever have one real friend, and that was her. Even when they were on opposite sides during the events of Code Geass, a quiet understanding remained between them. No matter what Lelouch did, their bond never completely broke, and I think that’s why so many people adore them as a pair – it was a truly unconditional relationship.
Yusuke and Kuwabara (YuYu Hakusho)
YuYu Hakusho, a hugely popular anime from the 90s, centers around Yusuke Urameshi, a rebellious teenager who dies after being hit by a car while saving a child. Surprisingly, he’s deemed worthy of a second chance in the afterlife and returns to life as a Spirit Detective, investigating supernatural events. Initially, Yusuke and Kuwabara are rivals, constantly fighting and teasing each other. But Kuwabara’s strong intuition soon proves valuable, and they become allies.
Yusuke and Kuwabara began as rivals in school, but through dangerous fights and tough experiences, they developed a strong and loyal friendship. They eventually became willing to sacrifice anything for each other, ultimately becoming like brothers. Many viewers now consider their bond a healthy and positive example of male friendship – a relationship worth emulating in today’s world.
