After a nearly three-year wait, Netflix has released season 2 of One Piece, continuing the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, played by Iñaki Godoy, as he searches for the legendary treasure of Gol D. Roger. The series is largely faithful to the original manga and anime by Eichirou Oda, and the episodes currently available cover the story up to the end of the Drum Island arc.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece isn’t a perfect copy of the original story, and Season 2 includes several changes. Some are small and don’t affect the main plot, while others add depth to the characters and story, or could significantly impact what happens next. Here’s a look at the biggest differences from the source material and how they might shape the series.

5. King Wapol Is Involved In Baroque Works’ Plot

I watched the end of One Piece season 2, and it focused on Luffy’s crew facing off against King Wapol on Drum Island, voiced by Rob Colletti. It’s been made clear throughout the anime, manga, and even the live-action adaptation that Wapol held a long-standing grudge against the kingdom of Alabasta – apparently, he was publicly embarrassed at a meeting years ago. He’d just reclaimed his throne when the Going Merry showed up, setting the stage for a confrontation.

The live-action series reveals that Wapol is supported by Baroque Works, who gave him his Devil Fruit hoping he’d help them when he went back to the Drum Kingdom. In the anime and manga, Wapol is portrayed as a spoiled and selfish ruler, driven by his own desires. However, the live-action version makes Wapol a much more threatening character by connecting him directly to Baroque Works’ plans in Alabasta, making his motivations far more serious than just personal gain.

4. Smoker and Tashigi Have Their Own Expanded Side Story

I’m so excited for One Piece season 2! It kicks off right where season 1 left us hanging, and we’re immediately introduced to Captain Smoker, played by Callum Kerr, during the Loguetown arc. I was hooked from the moment he and his lieutenant, Tashigi (Julia Rehwald), crossed paths with the Straw Hats. Seeing Luffy face danger with absolutely no fear really impressed them! They were determined to follow the Going Merry into the Grand Line, but Garp (Vincent Reagan) wasn’t having it. Instead, he sends them to check out a Marine outpost, only to find it’s under attack by agents from Baroque Works – talk about a cliffhanger!

During Luffy’s crew’s time at Big Garden, Smoker and Tashigi encounter agents from Baroque Works, but these events aren’t directly shown in the anime. Instead, we only see the aftermath when they capture Mr. 11. Similar to Koby and Helmeppo’s storyline in the first season, giving Smoker and Tashigi a larger role helps develop the Marine characters and highlights the growing danger posed by Baroque Works as the story progresses into season 3.

3. Several Future Straw Hat Crew Members Made Their Debuts Earlier

In addition to preparing the Marines for a bigger part in upcoming seasons, One Piece season 2 hinted at characters who will later join the Straw Hat Pirates. In Loguetown, Luffy makes a young Bartolomeo admire him, setting up their relationship after the timeskip, and we see Sabo watching Luffy set off for the Grand Line with Dragon. Episode 2 also unexpectedly introduced Brook through a flashback about Crocus and Laboon, where he performed the song “Binks’ Brew” for the whale.

Bartolomeo, Sabo, and Brooks haven’t appeared yet in this part of the story, either in the manga or anime. But their appearances aren’t just for fans – introducing them earlier makes the world feel more real and adds important context at key moments. They might not have big roles right now, but their eventual return promises to be very rewarding in future seasons.

2. Ace D. Portgas’ Debut Was Cut From The Drum Island Arc

One notable character fans were expecting to see in One Piece season 2 was missing. Portgas D. Ace, a popular character in both the anime and manga, first appears during the Drum Island arc and invites Luffy to find him in Alabasta. Because of this, many viewers hoped he’d make a quick appearance, similar to Smoker’s cameo in season 1.

Although Xolo Mariduena was cast as Ace before the second season aired, the character didn’t appear at all. The season ended by fully introducing Sir Crocodile (Joseph Manganiello) and revealing Miss All-Sunday’s (Lera Abova) real name. While Ace’s absence differs from the original story and may have frustrated some viewers, production on One Piece season 3 is underway, so fans might not have to wait long to see him as a future crew member in Alabasta.

1. Several Supporting Characters Received Surprising Deaths That Never Happened In The Anime or Manga

Season 2 of One Piece included both exciting new appearances and unexpected losses. After Zoro (Mackenyu) defeated him at Whisky Peak, Mr. 9 (Daniel Lasker), an ally of Vivi (Charithra Chandran), sacrificed himself to protect her from Miss Valentine (Jazzara Jasslyn) and Mr. 5 (Camrus Johnson). Later, at Little Garden, both Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine met their end – Zoro defeated Mr. 5, and Mr. 3 (David Dastmalchian) executed Miss Valentine for their failures.

The stories of all three agents continued after the main events, with Mr. 9 settling down in Whisky Peak to start a family, and Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine continuing their adventures, even after Baroque Works was finished. Because of this, it’s unlikely we’ll see these future storylines adapted into the One Piece anime, which might create suspense around new characters and whether they’ll face similar fates.
