5 Classic Shonen Anime Superior to Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw Man is a recent anime that premiered in 2022. It centers around Denji, a struggling teenager who inherits his father’s debts. He works as a Devil Hunter to make ends meet, but tragically dies and is reborn thanks to his pet Devil, Pochita. The series then follows Denji as he navigates life as a human-devil hybrid.

Chainsaw Man is a well-loved anime and has earned its popularity. While it excels in many areas, it doesn’t quite reach the level of some older, classic shonen series. It’s a strong show overall, but it does have a few drawbacks.

5. Bleach

Iconic Style

The anime Bleach centers around Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who can see ghosts. His life is turned upside down when he encounters Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper. After Rukia is injured, Ichigo unexpectedly gains her powers and becomes a Soul Reaper himself. Bleach is known for its unique and memorable power systems – like Zanpakuto and Arrancar forms – and features highly detailed, exciting fight sequences.

Besides its action, Bleach is famous for its striking character designs and stylish fashion, which really set it apart from other action anime. The show also takes the time to develop its villains, making them compelling and easy to remember. Chainsaw Man, however, doesn’t seem to prioritize these things as much, and many of its supporting characters and villains aren’t as well-developed or memorable.

4. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Constant Reinvention

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a generational story that centers around the Joestar family. What sets this action-packed series apart is its diverse cast of characters, each living in a different time and place, and fighting with unique abilities – ranging from martial arts to the mysterious power of Stands.

Compared to Chainsaw Man, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure stands out for being consistently fresh and innovative, always introducing new ideas. It’s also famous for its incredibly imaginative character and clothing designs, and its unpredictable, over-the-top storylines. Ultimately, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure tends to leave a more lasting impression on viewers than Chainsaw Man.

3. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Deeper Relationships

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood tells the story of brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who suffer terrible consequences after an alchemy experiment goes wrong. They embark on a quest to find the Philosopher’s Stone, hoping to regain what they’ve lost, and their shared journey strengthens their bond despite the hardships they face. The story is straightforward and consistently focuses on their ultimate goal.

I’ve been watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and what really struck me is how it explores the ethics of both war and scientific advancement. It’s not all serious though – there’s a good amount of humor and action mixed in. Compared to Chainsaw Man, I found the story in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to be far more layered and the plot consistently engaging.

2. Dragon Ball Z

Defined Modern Battle Shonen

Dragon Ball Z is a hugely popular and influential anime, practically defining the battle shonen genre. Its characters, particularly Goku and Vegeta, are unforgettable, with their ongoing rivalry driving much of the story. While the plot is fairly straightforward, Dragon Ball Z is known for being both iconic and emotionally powerful.

Compared to Chainsaw Man, Dragon Ball Z is expected to remain more popular for years to come. Dragon Ball Z is famous for its unforgettable fight scenes and its power system is easy to understand, clearly showing how Goku gets stronger. Because of Dragon Ball Z‘s lasting impact on the shonen genre, it’s difficult for Chainsaw Man to reach the same level of recognition.

1. Naruto

Iconic Emotional Impact

Like Dragon Ball Z, Naruto remains incredibly popular and influential. The series is celebrated for its detailed world, the compelling development of its characters, and villains who often find redemption. Naruto is also known for its emotional impact and how it portrays Naruto’s journey to adulthood.

Unlike Chainsaw Man, Naruto has a clear direction and tells a story that’s easy to follow, delivering satisfying emotional moments. There’s also a wealth of Naruto content available, allowing fans to really explore the characters, fight mechanics, and overall world. Naruto remains, and will likely always be, one of the best classic shonen anime and manga ever created.
