Summary
- Jon Snow’s agile and strategic combat style would outmaneuver The Mountain’s rash and aggressive approach.
- Ser Brienne of Tarth’s raw strength and strategic combat skills would overpower The Mountain’s brute force.
- Young Robert Baratheon’s superior training and battle intelligence would defeat The Mountain’s sheer strength.
In the world of “Game of Thrones,” Gregor Clegane, known as The Mountain, stood out for his unsavory deeds, making even the series’ infamous standards seem tame by comparison. His behavior was marked by brutality and excessive violence, when the situation instead called for self-control.
The Mountain was faithful to Tywin and Cersei Lannister. Without any sense of honor or morality, he performed their underhanded tasks, starting with sacking cities and territories. Powered by House Lannister and his own immense strength, The Mountain didn’t stop there. Although the Game of Thrones audience was relieved when he met his end in the Cleganebowl, if it had come to a confrontation between him and these characters, they would have easily defeated him as well.
Jon Snow
Carries A Tactical Advantage
- First Seen In Season 1, Episode 1: “Winter Is Coming”
In the world of “Game of Thrones”, Jon Snow’s physique is significantly smaller compared to The Mountain’s, and he lacks the military background that The Mountain possesses. However, Jon Snow was no less formidable, as he skillfully yielded the Old Bear’s Valyrian steel sword, Longclaw. More often than not, he would carefully analyze his adversaries before taking decisive action, utilizing his strategic acumen and accuracy. His battles became legendary – from his daring move at Hardhome where he killed a White Walker using agility, courage, and swift thinking.
As a seasoned movie critic, I find it alarming how the reckless, hostile, and aggressive nature of The Mountain is his downfall in this tale. Unlike him, most of Jon’s adversaries are formidable warriors who have seen battle. However, The Mountain’s brutal actions against the innocent – babies, children, and the helpless – are unjustified and only serve to strengthen Jon’s resolve.
In the face of a cunning opponent like Jon, The Mountain’s impulsive aggression will prove disastrous. Jon excels under pressure and swiftly adapts his strategies. This leaves The Mountain vulnerable to an unexpected attack, making his rashness all the more detrimental in this high-stakes game of power.
Ser Brienne Of Tarth
A Strong Knight With Brute Strength
- First Seen In Season 2, Episode 3: “What Is Dead May Never Die”
In terms of honor, Ser Brienne of Tarth matches Jon in every respect. As for sheer power and physical might, she holds her own against The Mountain. Her skillful execution of strategic combat moves could easily outmaneuver a mindless brute like The Mountain. Throughout her life, Brienne has honed her skills to prove her worth and silence those who doubted her abilities on the battlefield.
Brienne stands tall and commanding, exuding honor and strength. In Season 4, she outmatched Sandor Clegane, The Mountain’s brother, in a grueling one-on-one battle. Brienne is not one to back down, especially when confronted by an opponent like The Mountain. When it comes to these two, Brienne holds the advantage. Her combat skills and endurance on the battlefield have been demonstrated time and again. In a fight with The Mountain, she will deliver precise, powerful blows.
Khal Drogo
A Seasoned Warrior
- First Seen In Season 1, Episode 1: “Winter Is Coming”
Khal Drogo proudly led his tribe, the Khalasar, yet they were not quick to adapt to new ways, being as stubborn as they were at that time. However, Drogo proved himself a formidable warrior, triumphing over numerous battles and securing impressive victories against his adversaries. As Viserys Targaryen rightly told Daenerys, Khal Drogo was an unconquered warlord, a fact evident in the pride he displayed by wearing his braids.
From a movie-lover’s perspective, given that Drogo is accustomed to the nomadic lifestyle of the Dothraki, he possesses an inherent advantage over The Mountain, who has been spoiled by the luxuries of Westeros. His robust physique and towering stature are reminiscent of a formidable warrior. Wielding his Arakh with deadly precision, I’d advise against The Mountain engaging him in an open battlefield. Between these two characters, one being a ruthless vassal and the other a fearsome warlord who effortlessly navigates harsh terrains, it’s evident that Drogo will have the upper hand in any confrontation.
Ser Arthur Dayne
The Sword Of The Morning Would Rely On Technique Over Strength
- First seen In Season 6, Episode 3, “Oathbreaker” As Part Of Bran Stark’s Vision
Sir Arthur Dayne, known as the Sword of the Morning, could slice through Gregor Clegane, also known as The Mountain, effortlessly with his sword Dawn. This blade is a family heirloom only given to those deemed truly exceptional. Sir Arthur, the greatest swordsman who ever lived, was renowned for defeating the fearsome Smiling Knight in single combat, and he would easily dismantle such a chaotic giant.
In awe, I can’t help but extol the extraordinary swordsmanship of the revered knight, Ser Arthur. His mastery, unparalleled in both skill and elegance, left every adversary breathless. Donning the cloak of the Kingsguard, he exhibited an exceptional talent that allowed him to wield two swords simultaneously. As Lord Eddard Stark put it, “He was the finest swordsman I have ever seen.” Even Ned himself, along with all who crossed paths with him outside the Tower of Joy, were left in his wake, outclassed by his unrivaled prowess. Only when Howland Reed intervened, striking from behind during their duel, did Ser Arthur meet his match and ultimately fall.
Young Robert Baratheon
A Behemoth In His Younger Days
- First Seen In Season 1, Episode 1: “Winter Is Coming”
As a cinephile reminiscing, I’d say: In my youth, I was a robust fellow, unmatched in strength. My preferred weapon was a mighty warhammer, which I wielded with precision to fell Rhaegar Targaryen at the Trident. Victory fueled by rebellion found me resting on my laurels and succumbing to indulgence. Yet, when I was young, I possessed extraordinary qualities that set me apart.
In a clash between Gregor and the young Robert, it was a blend of factors that led to Gregor’s loss, primarily due to Robert’s advanced training, endurance, and agility. It’s important to note that Robert, who didn’t appear in Game of Thrones, won’t just rely on raw power to outsmart The Mountain. Instead, he will strategically dodge and counter the Mountain’s rash and simple-minded attacks. Eventually, Robert would triumph by using his warhammer to overpower his opponent.
