Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls is a hugely popular game series, but fans are used to waiting a long time between releases. It’s been over ten years since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came out in 2011, and players are still eager for The Elder Scrolls VI. While there have been new games related to the series, most of them are expansions for The Elder Scrolls Online.
It’s been a long time coming, and now a new generation of gamers has grown up waiting for the next game in the series. While The Elder Scrolls VI is still in development with no confirmed release date, here are five games that offer a similar experience to Elder Scrolls and can help fill the time. They’re listed in no specific order.
5) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Released in 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still a game people enjoy playing again and again. Like other Witcher games, you play as Geralt of Rivia, a character from the fantasy books by Andrzej Sapkowski. While set in a unique fantasy world, The Witcher 3 shares similarities with games like Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls Online. Players will fight monsters, dangerous opponents, and embark on a captivating story.
No game like this would be complete without tons of sidequests, and The Witcher 3 delivers! While the main story takes around 55 hours to finish, players who want to experience absolutely everything can easily spend over 300 hours. Recently updated after a decade, the game still feels as engaging and modern as it did upon its original release.
4) Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Released in 2024, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the fourth major installment in the Dragon Age series. If you’re a fan of Elder Scrolls and enjoyed Dragon Age: Inquisition while waiting for the next Elder Scrolls game, you should definitely check this one out. While the combat is different, The Veilguard shares similar gameplay and themes. It’s a highly engaging action role-playing game that will easily keep you entertained for 60 to 100+ hours.
3) Starfield

While Starfield seems very different from The Elder Scrolls – it’s a space exploration game where you travel to planets, build bases, and solve galactic puzzles – there’s a connection. It’s often called “Skyrim in space” because the same developer, Bethesda, created it, and Starfield shares many of the same gameplay features as the Elder Scrolls series.
If you enjoy the fantasy role-playing world of Elder Scrolls and want to try something similar but set in space, Starfield is worth checking out. While not everyone loves Starfield equally, it’s a good idea to try it on a friend’s Xbox or PC before buying it yourself. Hopefully, Bethesda will learn from any issues with Starfield when they create The Elder Scrolls VI. Even so, these flaws are minor because Starfield is a genuinely fun and engaging game, though it doesn’t offer much reason to play it again once you’ve finished it.
2) Baldur’s Gate 3

As a longtime fan of both Dungeons & Dragons and The Elder Scrolls, I think Baldur’s Gate III is going to really click with people who love games like Skyrim and Oblivion. It’s definitely a different feel though. Instead of the first-person perspective I’m used to, Baldur’s Gate III lets you move the camera around freely, switching between a classic top-down view and a closer, third-person style. And the gameplay is heavily based on the rules of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition – so expect a lot of dice rolls to determine success! Plus, combat is turn-based, which is a big departure from the real-time action in The Elder Scrolls games.
Even though the games are different, fans of The Elder Scrolls are likely to enjoy Baldur’s Gate III. It features a captivating story divided into three parts, with extensive customization options, and can be played solo or with friends online. The game is massive, offering 288 quests that players can tackle at their own pace. These quests range from individual companion storylines to the main narrative, and completing them all could take anywhere from 75 to 150+ hours.
1) Avowed

For fans of The Elder Scrolls, Avowed is a newly released game, launching in early 2025. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment – the same team behind the 2015 game Pillars of Eternity – Avowed lets players battle enemies using a combination of magic, strength, and guns. You can experience the game from either a first-person or third-person perspective.
A standout feature in Avowed that players are praising is its helpful way of indicating important dialogue. Instead of accidentally making a choice that upsets a character or drastically changes the story, you can easily see which conversations matter and understand the consequences before you respond. This system works really well and is a big reason why Avowed is a great game to play while fans wait for the next Elder Scrolls installment.
