5 Iconic Characters We Want as NPCs in Tales of the Shire

In modern blockbuster franchises, it has become common for fans to anticipate cameo appearances from past characters. Regardless if it’s movies, TV shows, comics, or video games, if a new franchise release is on the horizon, many enthusiasts hope for at least one or two unexpected guest stars from previously known figures within the series. While a high-quality franchise entry doesn’t necessarily require numerous cameos to be successful, when handled thoughtfully, these cameos can provide a delightful and well-earned treat for fans – essentially serving as fan service. With speculation growing about the upcoming Tales of the Shire, there is a chance it might feature some cameos of its own.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled about the upcoming game, Tales of the Shire, given its tantalizing previews. While it’s set during the expansive Third Age of Middle-earth, lasting more than 3,000 years, it appears that the story unfolds just before the main events of The Lord of the Rings. The player’s mission to grant Bywater its official village status suggests this timeline, as by the beginning of the LotR trilogy, Bywater was already a recognized village. This prime position in time means that we might encounter some beloved characters from the lore as NPCs in Tales of the Shire.

Tales of the Shire Cameo Wish List

Gandalf is already confirmed to appear in Tales of the Shire.

Bilbo Baggins

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but get excited about the prospect of seeing some familiar faces in the upcoming game, “Tales of the Shire,” set squarely in the heartland of Hobbits. It’s only natural for fans to anticipate a special appearance from at least one of the Hobbits from “The Lord of the Rings.” Given that this game seems to be nestled within the Middle-earth timeline, I believe Bilbo Baggins would be the ideal candidate for a cameo in this charming life-simulation. After all, by the time “The Fellowship of the Ring” begins, dear old Bilbo has already clocked 111 years!

In “Tales of the Shire,” it could be intriguing to observe Bilbo assuming the role of an unassuming mentor, stepping out of his usual secluded lifestyle to offer aid to the latest Hobbit in town. Despite residing in Hobbiton, a quick stroll across the river leads him to Bywater.

Gloin

It’s quite unrealistic to expect a significant number of members from the Fellowship to appear in Tales of the Shire, as they are all far away from the Shire during the events of Lord of the Rings. Nevertheless, there could be some appearances by individuals related to the Fellowship that might fit well. For example, Gloin, father of Gimli, could potentially feature in Tales of the Shire.

In the scenario where the story “Tales of the Shire” unfolds after the happenings in “The Hobbit“, it would logically lead to Gloin paying a visit to his old comrade-at-arms, Bilbo Baggins. During his journey, he might stop by Bywater, allowing game players an opportunity to buy exclusive goods that have been transported from the Lonely Mountain.

Tom Bombadil

One noteworthy enigma in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy realm of Middle-earth, Tom Bombadil, was omitted from Peter Jackson’s live-action trilogy, but he remains a beloved figure among fans. Residing on the outskirts of the Shire, this character possesses an enigmatic control over nature and employs it to aid Hobbits and other creatures encountered during his leisurely strolls. Bombadil is even impervious to the One Ring’s malevolent influence.

Given Tom Bombadil’s enigmatic nature, it might be fitting for him to appear as an occasional benefactor in the game, showing up sporadically during the player’s travels to offer helpful items, only to vanish again for several more days without a sign or trace.

Saruman

In the Third Age, around 1,000 years into it, one of the five divine beings sent to unite against Sauron’s possible resurrection, Saruman, arrived on Middle-earth. For the next 2,000 years, he was gradually corrupted by Sauron and the lingering power of the One Ring until his life reached its conclusion in an unexpected place: the Shire. Envious of Gandalf, Saruman plotted against the Hobbits but was ultimately defeated in the Battle of Bywater. A brief appearance of Saruman in Tales of the Shire could serve as a wistful reminder of his eventual fate in that land.
