5 Major Game Of Thrones Book Characters Who Never Made It To The TV Show

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series is known for its rich detail and incredibly well-developed characters. The popular TV show Game of Thrones brings many of these characters to life and features them prominently in the story.

Despite featuring many characters from the books, the show left out a few, which some fans have noticed. These omissions are particularly significant because some of the excluded characters play major roles in the book series and their absence altered the show’s storyline. While the show and books now exist as separate continuities, it’s disappointing that these characters never appeared.

Lady Stoneheart

Lady Stoneheart is an important character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Though Catelyn Stark appears in the Game of Thrones TV series, her storyline concludes at the Red Wedding, where she and her son, Robb Stark, are both killed.

In the novels, she’s brought back to life through the magic of R’hllor, the Red God. Beric Dondarrion sacrifices his life to revive her with a kiss, transforming her into Lady Stoneheart. As the name suggests, she’s become cold and ruthless, driven by a desire for vengeance against those who harmed her family. She plays a crucial role in the story, as the author, George R.R. Martin, has confirmed.

Victarion Greyjoy

Victarion Greyjoy is a significant character in the books, but his storyline was completely left out of the TV show, which explains why he never appeared. In the books, he’s currently traveling to Mereen with a plan to propose to Daenerys Targaryen and use a magical horn to control her dragons.

Victarion was a character with huge potential and would have definitely played a major role in the story. Sadly, he was never included in the show, for reasons that remain unclear.

Young Griff

The TV series definitively shows that Rhaegar Targaryen’s children were killed before their mother, Elia, met her end. This was presented as the end of the Targaryen dynasty, before Daenerys and Viserys fled to the Free Cities. However, the books suggest a different story: Varys, known as the Spider, is believed to have secretly taken Rhaegar’s son, Aegon Targaryen, to the Free Cities.

Varys wants to see the Targaryen family back in power, and is currently supporting a young man known as Young Griff, who is secretly Aegon Targaryen. Tyrion encounters Young Griff in the fifth book and finds him surprisingly charismatic. As leader of the Golden Company, he’s preparing to invade Westeros, but unfortunately, this storyline was left out of the TV series.

Jon Connington

The character Jon Connington wasn’t included in the TV show because of his connection to Aegon Targaryen. He was a close advisor to Rhaegar and responsible for protecting Aegon. After Aegon was taken to Essos, Jon Connington raised and guided him, essentially shaping him into the person he is now, known as Young Griff.

Jon Connington is also trying to arrange a marriage between Aegon and Daenerys, hoping it will strengthen Aegon’s claim to the Iron Throne, much like he secured the support of the formidable Golden Company mercenaries. Unfortunately, this character doesn’t appear in the TV series.

Arianne Martell

Arianne Martell’s absence is a major disappointment for many Game of Thrones viewers. The show’s portrayal of Dorne was widely considered the weakest part of the series, failing to capture the richness and complexity of the Dornish storyline as presented in the books. Dorne had a lot of potential, but the show didn’t live up to it.

Arianne Martell is an important character in the Dornish storyline of the books. As the eldest child of Doran Martell, the Prince of Dorne, she becomes the heir after her brother Trystane dies trying to work with Daenerys’ dragons. This sets her up for a major role in future books. Interestingly, the TV show completely left her out of the story.
