As a long-time anime enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous shonen protagonists, I must say that the characters Deku, Light Yagami, and Eren Yeager have left an indelible mark on the genre. Each of these characters embodies unique traits that have sparked intense debates among fans, with opinions ranging from adoration to vehement disapproval.
Shōnen anime, one of the most beloved genres in all of anime history, is easy to understand why it holds such a special place. This type of Japanese comics or animated series, primarily targeted at young boys, often features intense action scenes, is packed with elements that make for compelling stories in any medium.
Particularly in regards to their leading characters, nothing sparks enthusiasm among young audiences quite like witnessing a fellow youth wielding immense power pursue lofty aspirations. This is precisely what makes shōnen protagonists so appealing and widely acclaimed. However, even the most admired of these characters have their share of criticisms or groups of fans who disapprove of them and their actions. Below are five of the most divisive shōnen protagonists.
5 Ichigo
The Red-Headed Reaper
- Series: Bleach
- Voiced By: Masakazu Morita (Japanese), Johnny Yong Bosch (English)
Ichigo Kurosaki, the fiery-haired, resolute ex-troublemaker hero from the series “Bleach,” has earned a reputation within the anime community for numerous reasons. One such reason is his status as one of the trio of main characters in what’s affectionately referred to as ‘The Big Three’ of anime.
In the 2000s, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach rose to fame as the top manga and anime series, significantly increasing Shōnen Jump’s popularity. As a result, Ichigo, the protagonist of Bleach, is often compared to the leads of these other three series. His actions are likened to Luffy’s energetic and determined character, while his passion, hot-headedness, and warm heart are reminiscent of Naruto. However, Ichigo’s character appears somewhat subdued compared to typical Big Three shōnen protagonists. Unlike Naruto who aspires to be the next Hokage, or Luffy who dreams of ruling pirates, Ichigo has a more straightforward goal: he wants to safeguard those in peril, particularly his friends.
In the storyline, Ichigo consistently acts as a soul reaper, risking his own life to safeguard others against hollows and other supernatural beings. Critics find his straightforward personality, unwavering determination, and primary objective of enhancing his power and shielding more people somewhat uneventful for a main character in the Big Three.
4 Takemichi
Our Crybaby Hero
- Series: Tokyo Revengers
- Voiced By: Yuuki Shin (Japanese), AJ Beckles (English)
The Tokyo Revengers series is known for its humorous nickname for Takemichi as the “Tearful Champion,” which comes from his friends and fans within the story, as well as those outside it. However, being called the Tearful Champion gives him a unique image that makes people have strong opinions about him. While some fans adore him, others view him as a weak protagonist in various ways.
While many viewers found the protagonist’s transformation from a cowardly character into one fighting for justice in the Tokyo Revengers anime intriguing, a significant number of others grew weary due to his frequent tears and anxious behaviors.
In his quest to rescue his beloved and keep a gang from disintegrating, Takemichi encounters numerous hardships as he repeatedly journeys through time.
Although many fans believe otherwise, it appears that Takemichi often struggles to adapt to his responsibilities. Occasionally, it seems that he fails to develop courage, master fighting skills, or assert himself effectively, at a speed that viewers might find satisfactory.
3 Deku
All Might’s Successor
- Series: My Hero Academia
- Voiced By: Daiki Yamashita (Japanese), Justin Briner (English)
In another interpretation, the character “Izuku Midoriya,” or “Deku” for short, could equally be referred to as “The Tearful Hero.” He is the central figure in the highly acclaimed superhero manga and anime series, “My Hero Academia,” which has taken the world by storm. In a universe where most individuals possess extraordinary abilities, leading to widespread disorder, selfless heroes are indispensable. Throughout the storyline, Deku demonstrates time and again that he is precisely the kind of person we need in such circumstances, despite being born quirkless.
Deku is smart, adaptable, compassionate, inspiring, and incredibly persistent in his quest to uphold justice and protect those around him, as well as the world at large. However, despite these commendable qualities, there are several points of contention among fans of My Hero Academia. Some perceive Deke as weak or overly anxious, while others find him pitiful, particularly given his deep affection for Bakugo, who had previously been cruel to him. Additionally, there are those who question whether Deku truly deserved to become All Might’s successor and inherit his power. In both the storyline and real-world discussions, it is often argued that a character like Mirio should have been chosen instead.
Deku, a character, garners an abundance of affection yet nearly equal amounts of disapproval based on the perspective of his fans discussing him.
2 Light Yagami
The God Of The New World
- Series: Death Note
- Voiced By: Mamoru Miyano (Japanese), Brad Swaile (English)
Death Note may not be immediately associated with the shōnen genre when considering anime, yet it was still published in Shōnen Jump. Interestingly, Light, despite displaying some characteristics typical of shōnen protagonists, is actually much darker in his actions. This ambiguity makes him a highly debated character; viewers and readers worldwide struggle to decide whether they approve or disapprove of Kira’s actions.
Viewers found themselves torn between whether they genuinely wanted him to emerge victorious in the end, or if they felt he received fitting consequences for his actions. Initially, Light appeared as an appealing protagonist, being a brilliant yet sheltered individual yearning for a transformation in the world. A character that many could identify with. However, as the story unfolds, Light grows increasingly comfortable using a pen and notebook to eliminate criminals, reshaping the world. This leads him down a path of narcissism, becoming more ruthless and willing to kill anyone who obstructs his vision of an ideal world.
To this day, audiences are still split on whether he was righteous or evil all along.
1 Eren Yeager
The Attack Titan
- Series: Attack on Titan
- Voiced By: Yūki Kaji (Japanese), Bryce Papenbrook (English)
Since Eren Yeager first appeared in public as a character, he’s been embroiled in heated debates and discussions. As the Attack on Titan storyline unfolded, this debate intensified even more, with Eren being recognized as one of the most intriguing, skillfully written, yet profoundly divisive characters in any form of literature – not just in anime or shōnen genres.
Initially in the series, Eren was a unique portrayal of a typical shonen protagonist, characterized by strong ambition and readiness for battle. However, he had a more ferocious and rage-driven demeanor compared to standard shonen main characters like Goku and Luffy. At first, many viewers disliked him due to his impulsiveness, whining, and violence, but they could still appreciate the depth of his character. As Eren’s character evolved, so did his appeal, becoming increasingly complex.
After discovering the real facts about the Titans and realizing that many humans were hostile towards his kind, Eren grew more reserved, contemplative, and ruthless in his actions. By the end of the series, he carried out a plan to eliminate much of humanity, yet managed to secure a good life for his friends in a chilling mix of terror and tenderness. Opinions on Eren’s deeds vary widely, with some viewing him as an unjustified hero and others considering him one of the most malevolent characters.
