Ash Ketchum, the main character from the original Pokémon anime, doesn’t always fully evolve his Pokémon, but he does have some powerful, fully-evolved partners. His Charizard, originally from the Kanto region, is particularly well-known, especially considering its difficult beginnings. Another strong ally is Ash’s Sceptile, which is known for being calm, quick, and incredibly agile.
Even so, Ash didn’t catch a lot of Pokémon throughout his journey, not even their initial forms or fully evolved stages. Many of these are considered “pseudo-legendary” by fans because they’re incredibly strong in battle, even though they aren’t actually Legendary Pokémon. Others, while not pseudo-legendary, still have impressive reputations and power.

If you venture deep into the Hoenn mountains, you might find Absol, a striking Dark-type Pokémon. It’s easily recognized by its white fur, dark blue claws, and a large horn that extends from its face. Absol is a quiet and caring Pokémon with a special ability: it can predict disasters. It will appear to warn people of danger, though it was once mistakenly blamed for causing those very events.
Fortunately, people have learned that Absol is actually a helpful Pokémon. Ash discovered this firsthand when he met an Absol that appeared to be attacking him and his friends after they met Jirachi. It turned out the Absol was just protecting Jirachi and trying to guide it home. While Ash has encountered several Absol since then, he hasn’t added one to his team.
Hydriegon Is Feared by Many for Its Destructive Powers
Some Say It Was Humanity Who Caused the Dark/Dragon-type To Act This Way
Hydriegon is currently the only Dark/Dragon-type Pokémon that’s fully evolved, and it’s well-known for its frightening looks. What makes it particularly unusual is that it has two smaller heads where its front legs should be. These extra heads don’t actually think – they just bite at anything close by. Stories tell of Hydriegon destroying towns, but newer information suggests it became aggressive because people attacked it for how it looked long ago.
I’ve noticed in the Pokémon games that Hydriegon is Ghetsis’s signature Pokémon, and it’s pretty clear the Pokémon really doesn’t like him! Hydriegon first appeared in the animated series alongside Carlita, who comes from the People of the Vale. Ash has run into a few Hydriegon over the years, as well as their earlier forms, Deino and Zweilous. Usually, these Hydriegon have trainers, but knowing Ash, it wouldn’t surprise me if he eventually met one and added it to his team.

A Pokemon That Should Never Be Angered
Bagon, a rare Dragon-type Pokémon, doesn’t have wings but desperately wants to fly. It constantly tries to launch itself from cliffs, protecting its head with the tough rock on top. Once it evolves into Shelgon, it retreats to caves and patiently waits for its final transformation. Finally, it becomes Salamence, a powerful, winged Pokémon that soars through the sky with incredible speed, fueled by pure happiness. Legend has it that Bagon’s strong desire to fly as a young Pokémon somehow shaped its evolution, influencing its very DNA.
Salamence is famous for both its love of flying and its fierce temper. Despite this, it’s a popular Pokémon among Trainers, and you can often find people with Salamence or its earlier forms on their teams. Zinnia, a key character in the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Delta Episode, is one example – her Salamence was powerful enough to Mega Evolve. Ash has encountered Salamence multiple times, but hasn’t yet caught one himself. Still, with his experience training Dragon-type Pokémon, he’d likely be a great match for a Salamence.

Tyranitar Is One of the Most Popular Psuedo-Legendary Pokemon
A Dinosaur-like Pokemon That Loves To Battle
Tyranitar has been a popular Pokémon since it first appeared in Gold and Silver. This dinosaur-like Pokémon is known for its tough, armored body, giving it strong defenses. However, trainers need to be careful – Tyranitar is very vulnerable to Fighting-type attacks. Despite this weakness, it remains a highly sought-after Pokémon. When Tyranitar Mega Evolves, it becomes even more powerful and intimidating, and can even become disobedient.
Tyranitar is a strong and independent Pokémon, so it takes a skilled and patient Trainer to handle it effectively. While traveling through Johto, Ash and his friends found a lost Larvitar who had become separated from its parent. They quickly grew fond of the gentle baby Pokémon, but they understood that Larvitar would be happiest reunited with its family, even though they were sad to see it go. Still, they believed Larvitar would have become a powerful addition to Ash’s team if it had stayed with them.

I’m a huge Pokémon fan, and Metagross is seriously one of the coolest! You see a lot of those powerful, almost-legendary Pokémon being Dragon-types, but Metagross stands out – it’s Steel and Psychic, which is awesome. It originally came from the Hoenn region, and the story is that it forms when two Metang actually fuse together! And get this – each Metang is made when two Beldum combine! So, Metagross effectively has four brains working as one. That means it’s unbelievably intelligent, like a supercomputer, and can predict what its opponents are going to do next. It can even float! But it gets even better – Metagross can Mega Evolve into Mega Metagross, and that’s when it gets really intense. The Pokédex says that if Mega Metagross thinks it’s going to lose a battle, it’ll dig its claws in and start a countdown… then unleash Explosion, hoping to knock out its opponent even if it means taking itself down with it. Talk about dedication!
Steven Stone, the Hoenn region’s Champion and a big fan of gemstones, owns a rare, shiny Metagross that can transform into an even more powerful form. Other trainers like Anabel, Paul, and Alain also rely on Metagross as strong partners in battle. During their travels in Sinnoh, Ash and his friends encounter a wild Metagross and its competitive rival, Magnezone, who constantly challenge each other. Ash could have caught both of these Steel-type Pokémon, but he decided against it. If he had befriended the wild Metagross, though, he likely would have won many difficult battles.
