As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the indie game scene has been a treasure trove of delightful surprises and hidden gems. Each of these games on this list has left an indelible mark on me, shaping not just my perspective on gaming but also my life in general.
From the heart-wrenching stories of OMORI to the nail-biting tension of FTL: Faster Than Light, each game has taught me something new about storytelling, design, and the human condition. And let’s not forget the sheer joy of blasting my way through space in FTL or the chills I got while navigating the eerie world of Little Nightmares.
But what truly sets these games apart is their ability to evoke emotions that resonate long after the credits roll. They tap into something deep within us, making us question our own lives, our choices, and our place in the universe. And if that’s not the mark of a truly great game, I don’t know what is!
Now, before I sign off, let me leave you with a little joke to lighten the mood: How did the indie developer feel when their game finally made it onto this list? They were absolutely pixelated with joy!
Amidst the grandeur of today’s top-tier video games, it’s all too simple to lose sight of the smaller, independent game developers who are often overshadowed by the spectacle.
However, acting that way could be unwise, since it’s quite accurate to say that in this case, greatness often resides within compact dimensions.
As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in both AAA titles and independent games, I can confidently say that there is a treasure trove of high-quality indie games out there that can easily hold their own against the biggest names in the industry. To prove this point, I have compiled a comprehensive list showcasing the cream of the crop when it comes to indie gaming excellence.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m always on the lookout for the freshest, most thrilling indie games out there. At Dualshockers, we regularly refresh our list of top indie games every six months, making sure to include any new additions that have managed to crack the Top 50 of all time.
50. Cave Story
The Grandfather Of Indie Gaming
Back in the day, I found myself immersed in a timeless treasure that, despite its seemingly outdated and fundamental nature compared to modern games, stands tall as an indisputable pioneer in the world of independent gaming – Cave Story.
It’s often argued that Cave Story was the first authentic independent game, given it was launched in 2004, well before the surge of indie games on Xbox Arcade.
Fundamentally, Cave Story is a side-scrolling platform game incorporating aspects of the Metroidvania genre, and remarkably well-crafted for its type.
Providing top-notch graphics for its era, featuring demanding levels such as the Bloodstained Sanctuary for those seeking a genuine test of prowess, and most notably, it was available for free for an extended period.
Although it’s no longer free to play, the enhanced version of the game called “Cave Story+” can now be easily obtained. If you’re interested in experiencing the original source that sparked the independent gaming scene, this is definitely the game for you.
49. Oxenfree
Teen Bop Horror
It might have seemed unbelievable that the closed Netflix games division could create an indie game deserving of being among the greatest ever made. However, thanks to Netflix-owned Night School studios, we were fortunate enough to receive a chilling 2D narrative horror title called Oxenfree.
Oxenfree is a subtly eerie game that mimics the style of the popular series Stranger Things, where you control a group of teenagers exploring Edwards Island, uncovering a mysterious phenomenon that rips open a gateway to another dimension.
This initiates a thrilling tale powered by augmented reality (ARG), brimming with chilling paranormal encounters, bizarre landscapes, and decisions that have real consequences.
Regrettably, the follow-up titled “Lost Signals” didn’t reach the same level of greatness as the original one, however, the initial release stands tall on its own as a significant figure in the indie scene.
48. Chained Echoes
A JRPG Gem
A hint of anticipation is present, as more than one tribute to Chrono Trigger will appear on this list, yet it’s important to proceed step by step rather than jumping to conclusions.
Without a doubt, Chained Echoes stands out as one of the top-tier indie JRPGs, boasting a captivating storyline, an abundance of engaging combat mechanics to grasp and perfect, and a charming ensemble of characters to bond with.
Some players might find the intricate workings of this game challenging, yet the complexity underscores the game’s impressive ambition as an indie title. The depth of its systems is reminiscent of those found in JRPGs produced by Square Enix, ATLUS, and Level-5, which is quite a compliment indeed.
This impressive creation took more than seven years to develop, but the extra time invested certainly proved worthwhile. The final product, an indie JRPG from the west, packs a powerful punch that far surpasses what one might expect.
47. A Hat In Time
Move Over Mario
Whenever I come across fellow Nintendo enthusiasts raving about Super Mario Odyssey, I can’t resist chiming in with a nod to its similarities to the charming game A Hat in Time.
It’s important to acknowledge that Mario certainly refined the concept, but let’s not forget, A Hat in Time was actually the pioneer, and it executed it quite effectively.
In this game, you’ll embark on an exciting adventure playing as Hat Girl, who is on a mission to gather all the Time Fragments to fix her spaceship. This whimsical, three-dimensional platformer offers a fun and engaging experience!
The concept is straightforward yet offers unique, engaging scenarios with amusing storylines, quirky tricks, and – true to form in character-based platform games – plenty of items to discover hidden throughout.
Additionally, you’ll have the ability to create caps that boast special abilities, similar to the well-known game starring the mustached plumber character.
In a time when mascot platformers seemed to have vanished, this game stands out as a breathtaking revival, offering an experience reminiscent of the legendary Nintendo platformers from yesteryear. As a fan, I can’t help but feel compelled to recommend it to anyone yearning for a taste of that golden era.
46. Thank Goodness You’re Here
Cor, Blimey
Few games manage to pull off comedy effectively, let alone making it the core aspect of gameplay. However, Thank Goodness You’re Here does just that, placing players in a quirky northern English village where seemingly ordinary people require your assistance with an array of bizarre and absurd tasks.
The game is filled with British humor from start to finish, and despite its relatively short playtime of around three hours, it offers non-stop laughter all the way through.
Instead of simply running around and hitting whatever you come across, the game will lead you through a series of comedic, unconventional levels by providing ample opportunities for physical humor.
If you’re looking for a good laugh, consider spending a dime on this one. Then, figure out if you lean more towards the small pie or the large pie person. It seems there are strong opinions on this matter, so make your choice carefully!
45. Braid
An Xbox Arcade Relic
Among the many titles often mentioned when recalling the initial wave of popular indie games, Braid consistently surfaces as a notable contender.
In those days, it was truly remarkable, and even now, it continues to be stunning and mesmerizing. It delivers a challenging, time-based puzzle experience that really stimulates your thinking skills. Yet, what makes this stand out is not merely its excellent gameplay.
The unexpected turn in the plot challenges your perception as a video game player manipulating your character, and what makes it even more intriguing is its connection to the Manhattan Project.
It appears as if I’ve spontaneously concocted this statement, yet let me assure you, the concepts of nuclear devastation and the game ‘Braid’ are intrinsically linked. However, disregarding that connection, it’s an adorable and ingenious puzzle game that deserves your attention.
44. To The Moon
That Damn Platypus
You want to cry your little eyes out? Well, then, you’re in the right place.
In a simpler and more conversational style: “To the Moon” is a game created using RPG Maker, where the story revolves around a man who’s near death. He’s been granted the ability to enhance his memories, and in this state, he decides to use this power to visit the moon – his heart’s desire.
It appears strange at first why they’re doing it, but as you explore their past experiences and understand the life they led, you eventually grasp the heartbreaking rationale behind their desire.
For a deeper understanding, less is often more in this case, making it all the more compelling to experience. So, go ahead and indulge in this game; it promises an emotional and stunning independent masterpiece.
43. This War of Mine
War From The Other Side
In survival games, players often find themselves in an unfamiliar setting where they feel uneasy and exposed, but with time, they usually get acclimated to the hardships and rise to power within the harsh terrain. However, This War of Mine doesn’t follow that pattern; instead, it maintains a sense of persistent struggle and vulnerability for its players.
In this game set during the Soviet Civil War, you assume the character of an ordinary individual struggling to endure the harsh realities of war. Unlike some other games, there are no extraordinary abilities or inexplicable construction talents at your disposal.
In this harsh, unforgiving world where many would kill for a simple can of beans, your only shelter is a small, run-down structure, and your companions are just a handful of fellow survivors.
In a world teeming with ruthless individuals who’d do anything for a can of beans, you’ve got nothing but a rundown building to take refuge in, and only a few other survivors to lean on for support.
This game presents numerous challenges, intricate life support mechanisms, difficult decisions, and emotional upheavals. It isn’t suitable for those with delicate sensibilities, but it stands as one of the most outstanding survival games ever created.
42. SUPERHOT
Bullet-Time Choreography
Throughout the 2010s decade, the first-person shooter genre became quite stagnant with major titles like Battlefield and Call of Duty releasing annually without much change. The gaming community desperately yearned for a pioneering independent FPS game to breathe fresh air into the scene.
Afterward, just like a well-timed entrance in a play, SUPERHOT burst into the scene, providing First-Person Shooter (FPS) action reminiscent of The Matrix that was completely unprecedented and unique.
In the game SUPERHOT, time stands still until you take action, allowing you to strategize and carefully navigate combat scenarios much like a dancer memorizing and executing choreography in a performance. This first-person shooter (FPS) can be experienced more like a puzzle due to its unique time mechanics.
One of the top-tier time-bending action games, boasting an unrivaled sense of style in today’s first-person shooter scene, and single-handedly revitalizing a somewhat routine genre with its innovative gameplay – that’s SUPERHOT for you!
41. Dredge
What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor?
Whenever I discuss Dredge, I often bring up the nautical PlayStation 1 action-puzzler, Overboard, at the same moment. This is mainly due to the fact that Dredge was my first gaming experience where I could pilot a boat and navigate through a video game world once more.
However, this game isn’t merely about navigating, knotting ropes, or hoisting the sails. It’s a blend of open-world exploration, survival as a fisherman requiring resource management, and a thrilling Lovecraftian horror that demands constant vigilance.
The game features an exceptional balance between risk and reward, where you decide whether to venture out at night for extra fishing catches or head home to escape potential dangers lurking beneath. This choice often results in a captivating ‘one more day’ cycle that’s just as addictive as expected.
After acknowledging that the initial terror subsides somewhat within the first few hours due to the scares becoming slightly foreseeable, I must say overall, it’s an impressive indie naval adventure worth experiencing by all.
40. Fez
A Matter of Perspective
As someone who’s spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of video gaming, I can confidently say that Phil Fish is a figure who divides opinions within our community. However, I must acknowledge his remarkable accomplishment in creating Fez – an achievement that resonates deeply with my own passion for innovative game design.
Fez is often regarded as a pioneering indie game, paving the way for other games with similar complexities to follow suit. It’s an engaging puzzle-platformer that skillfully combines 2D and 3D dimensions, creating a thought-provoking universe for players to delve into.
Exploring uncharted territories, uncovering hidden truths, and doing so with an adorable companion makes for a fulfilling and gratifying journey.
As a long-time fan of retro gaming, I can tell you that the anticipation for Fez 2 has been palpable within our community. However, after years of waiting and countless delays, it seems we may never get to play the sequel we were promised. But let me tell you something, even if Fez 2 remains a distant dream, having just one game like it is truly remarkable.
If you’ve missed out on this gem, I highly recommend seeking it out and playing it as soon as possible. Trust me; it’s worth the effort. The unique puzzle-platforming mechanics, combined with its charming art style and captivating storyline, make for an unforgettable gaming experience that is not to be missed. So, don’t let Fez slip through your fingers – give it a try and see for yourself why it’s considered one of the best indie games out there!
39. In Stars and Time
JRPG Groundhog Day
If you’ve experienced one Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG), you might find many of them to be quite similar. Typically, you assume the role of an initially weak protagonist who, surprisingly, rallies a group of unlikely allies. Through the bond of camaraderie, you ultimately confront and vanquish a deity.
Typically, the structure remains unaltered in “In Stars and Time,” but instead of breaking tradition, it skillfully weaves your characters into a meticulously designed time loop. Your character, Siffrin, is tasked with finding a solution to end this endless cycle of chaos.
This results in one of the wittiest role-playing game (RPG) journeys from the West that I’ve ever encountered. The exceptional dialogue, an endearing group of characters, and a humorous rock, paper, scissors battle system make it consistently enjoyable throughout.
You might go mad like Siffrin come the end, but we promise that’s part of the charm.
38. Hotline Miami
Neon Bloodsoaked Fun
For someone who adores independent video games but frequently finds themselves short on time to immerse in gaming sessions as extensively as desired, titles like Hotline Miami prove particularly beneficial due to their compatibility with portable devices, making them perfect for quick yet satisfying gameplay experiences.
In this psychedelic side-scrolling game, the concept remains consistently straightforward as you progress through each stage: Enter a zone, and it’s essential that you eliminate all opponents before they manage to do the same to you.
As an electrifying soundtrack thumps like a heartbeat, empowering you, you’ll find an array of tools – from baseball bats to shotguns – at your disposal, ready for use against those who dare oppose you. However, be mindful that a deeper strategy than you might initially consider is often necessary.
This game is tough, it doesn’t hold back, but its intense, non-stop style of play means that, although you might take a few hits to the head, you’ll just be instantly revived, get right back in there, and have the chance to dish out some payback.
It’s extremely enjoyable, filled with excitement and confusion at times, perfect for playing anywhere, making it an ideal choice overall. In essence, it offers everything you need.
37. Pathologic 2
Arguably Not That Fun
I usually make sure to note that Pathologic 2 isn’t suitable for every player. If you’re looking for enjoyable gaming experiences, I would honestly advise against it.
As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of video games, I can confidently say that not all games need to be enjoyable to offer a valuable and impactful experience. Case in point: Pathologic, a brutal survival simulator that leaves you feeling drained yet captivated. This game is not for the faint-hearted; it’s a relentless grinder that wears you down with complex systems, dramatic storytelling elements, and an arsenal of tricks designed to challenge you at every turn. Having played through its dark and unforgiving landscape, I can attest to the fact that Pathologic proves beyond a doubt that even the most difficult and challenging games can still deliver a profound and memorable gaming experience.
In simpler terms, it’s essential for you to go back to your hometown urgently as a plague threatens everyone there. To succeed in saving them, you must manage your time perfectly, but be aware, you probably won’t get it right the first time.
This artwork is strikingly raw and melancholic, I acknowledge it might be tough to appreciate. However, taking the time to explore it could reveal that this masterpiece by Slavjank holds more value than its actual weight in gold.
36. A Short Hike
A Pocket-Sized Open World
If you’re a fan of independent video games, you might have come across the Wholesome Games trend. These are a specific type of games with a comforting atmosphere and no pressure or “game over” situations. It’s always nice to have a game that feels like a warm, snuggly blanket in your collection, and A Short Hike is exactly that.
In this game, you’ll be taking on the role of Claire, a small bird, who is trying to reach cell phone signal to call her mother. The only way to do so is by ascending to the summit of Hawk Peak. So, your adventure, known as Short Hike, turns out to be longer than expected in reality.
However, I find that the journey of acquiring feathers to ascend higher can be quite fulfilling, the side missions offer enjoyable diversions, the characters you encounter are both adorable and comical, and the finale is an emotional payoff worth pursuing as it leaves a heartwarming impression.
Not many modern games manage to make Dreamcast-era polygons appear stylish nowadays, but A Short Hike is an exception, and I wholeheartedly suggest giving it a try during a relaxed Sunday afternoon.
35. Furi
Boss Rush Bonanza
Only a small number of games dare to construct an experience centered on a single theme, and even fewer tackle a challenging or off-putting aspect of gaming that might discourage less experienced players. Yet, this wasn’t a worry for the creators behind Furi. Instead, they chose to embrace the unique and complex aspects of gameplay as their primary focus.
In this game, you’ll encounter a merciless sequence of boss battles, each one designed to hinder your progress as they aim to keep you captive. Trust me when I tell you, these bosses are exceptionally skilled at what they do.
The boss fights in this game are complex, action-packed, and incredibly tough ordeals that demand mastery of the game’s bullet-heavy gameplay, timing for parrying, and numerous other skills. Yet, despite your best efforts, you will find them extremely difficult to overcome.
This game is equally renowned for its thrilling, rhythmic soundtrack, which sets it apart in the gaming world, and its challenging boss battles reminiscent of the Soulsborne series. This combination makes it an essential choice for gamers seeking a tough challenge.
34. Pacific Drive
Drive To Survive
Lately, I’ve found that survival games have fallen into a bit of a routine. Typically, I start off as a character in rags, barely covering the essentials, and over time, I construct a place I can take pride in, calling it my home base.
As a gamer, I’ve played my fair share of games, but Pacific Drive stands out as it boldly carves its own niche. Unlike the usual survival games where you rely on weapons like bows or firearms, here your lifeline is a run-down station wagon. In this game, driving becomes the key to survival.
In this fresh, unusual adventure, your automobile will serve as your vital link to life, guiding you through the breathtaking landscapes of the Olympic Peninsula. As you journey, you’ll encounter lethal mysteries and peculiarities that will need to be unraveled.
If you neglect regular car maintenance, effectively letting your vehicle fall into disrepair, you might as well be counting down to your own demise. On the other hand, this intriguing tale of survival is a must-watch, offering an engaging narrative and a refreshing perspective on storytelling, making it an exhilarating experience once you have the opportunity to watch it.
33. Little Nightmares
Little Guy, Big Scares
Although it might be challenging now to categorize Little Nightmares as an independent series, given its current standing, it undeniably made a name for itself by boldly delivering high-quality horror experiences that surpassed expectations when it initially emerged.
In simpler terms, this independent horror game shares many similarities with renowned titles like LIMBO and INSIDE by Playdead. It delivers a chilling side-scrolling adventure that leans heavily into suspenseful, spine-tingling terror.
In this strange realm, the assembly of nightmarish creatures you’ll face is incredibly terrifying, serving as a stark reminder of just how fragile and exposed you are.
Not only does it deliver chills, but it also offers intriguing puzzles, challenging platforming sections, and thrilling boss battles. Consequently, this game, albeit brief, packs a punch without any unnecessary content. In essence, it’s an unadulterated masterpiece.
From my own life experiences, I’ve come to believe that engaging with danger and survival can sometimes lead to a transformation that borders on the monstrous. I’ve faced my fair share of beasts in both the physical and metaphorical sense, and I’ve seen how those encounters can shape us into something more resilient, more ruthless, or even more fearsome. But, it’s important to remember that this transformation is not always for the better – sometimes, we lose a piece of our humanity in the process.
32. OMORI
Time For Some Trauma Bonding
As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement upon hearing about another RPG Maker masterpiece joining the Hall of Fame! Much like To The Moon, delving into OMORI requires a certain level of emotional fortitude. Brace yourself for an immersive journey that may leave you teary-eyed or utterly moved.
As a longtime fan of graphic novels, I can attest that there are few works as emotionally impactful, creatively written, and visually stunning as this one. With its unique blend of heart-wrenching storytelling and striking artwork, it has left an indelible mark on me and countless other readers. It’s a testament to the power of art when it can evoke such profound emotions and resonate with people so deeply. This is one graphic novel that I will never forget.
In the game titled OMORI, you assume the role of Sunny, a solitary child who escapes into an imaginary world to avoid confronting reality. The reasons behind his retreat are integral to the story and I wouldn’t spoil them for you, as each revelation carries profound emotional weight.
Indeed, I recommend you give the indie game OMORI a try if you appreciate emotionally charged narratives and exceptional writing in your video games. It’s certainly worthy of your focus and interest.
31. FTL: Faster Than Light
A Roguelike Space Opera
I won’t hesitate to admit that Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games aren’t really my cup of tea. I prefer games that allow me time to strategize, and those that demand immediate responses can drive me up the wall. However, the fact that I’m still captivated by FTL, despite its RTS origins, testifies to how exceptional this game truly is.
Faster Than Light” is an adventure game set in space that became well-known even before roguelikes gained massive popularity following Hades. You embark on an epic journey in this title.
This seemingly straightforward journey from point A to B has become quite complex due to unexpected meetings along the way and the risks they present.
Or:
The easy trip from A to B has turned into a challenging endeavor because of unexpected events and potential dangers that have popped up.
You’ll have to skillfully handle your team, frequently facing tough choices that seem insurmountable. Even with the best planning, if fortune doesn’t favor you, you might exhaust your supply of oxygen and be forced to begin anew.
Due to its highly engaging nature and the high probability of repeated play, we believe that you’ll find yourself eagerly returning to this game multiple times.
