Jujutsu Kaisen is known for being a deeply sad story. The series features fantastic, well-developed characters who have become incredibly popular and are considered icons in modern anime and manga.
Watching Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s clear this world is incredibly dangerous – even the most powerful characters aren’t safe. Sadly, that means a lot of good people have met tragic ends. I wanted to take a look at some of those characters and talk about why they really deserved better outcomes than the ones they received.
Riko Amanai Was Just A Young Girl Who Deserved Much More
Death: Hidden Inventory Arc
I watched the Hidden Inventory arc unfold, and Riko Amanai was truly at the heart of it all. She was the Star Plasma Vessel, meant to channel Tengen, which made her unbelievably important to the entire Jujutsu Kaisen story. But it was easy to forget that, despite this huge responsibility, she was just fourteen years old – and essentially being asked to sacrifice everything.
She had already suffered immense loss, including the deaths of her parents and entire family. Finally, Geto told her she wasn’t obligated to follow through with the merger, and she gratefully accepted. Sadly, this fleeting happiness was shattered when Toji shot her, an event that deeply traumatized Geto and contributed to his descent into madness.
Yuji Was Forced To Outlive Everyone He Loved
Currently Alive In Modulo
Yuji is known for being a cheerful and energetic person who always brightens the mood. As the story of Jujutsu Kaisen unfolds, he embraces his responsibility to protect others and consistently overcomes challenges, determined to make a positive impact on the world.
In contrast, his character in Modulo is quite different. Because he never died – his unique body and abilities granted him immortality – he’s been forced to watch everyone he cares about age and pass away while he remains incredibly powerful. This experience has made him cold and withdrawn, leaving him with a deep loneliness similar to what his teacher, Gojo, also felt.
Yuki Met A Horrific End Against A Monster
Death: Culling Game Arc
Yuki is often considered the best female character in Jujutsu Kaisen, and she captivated viewers in every scene she appeared in. As a rare and incredibly powerful Special Grade sorcerer, she had a noble goal: to rid the world of Cursed Energy, preventing the creation of new Cursed Spirits and ultimately making the world a better place.
Yuki’s greatest opponent was Kenjaku, a remarkably powerful Jujutsu sorcerer. Their fight became famous, and Yuki fought bravely. Sadly, she was always holding back to protect her friends, and this ultimately led to her tragic death.
Gojo Was Used As A Weapon For His Entire Life
Death: Shinjuku Showdown Arc
Satoru Gojo was overwhelmingly the strongest sorcerer of his time, comparable in power to Sukuna, the ancient king of curses. Because of his immense strength, people often saw Gojo as a tool rather than a person, leading to a lonely life where he struggled to connect with others who could understand his experiences.
Even though his death was tragic, some believe Gojo died as he would have preferred – facing a truly worthy opponent after years of training. While his final battle might have fulfilled his desire to be tested, it also highlights the unfairness of a life spent solely as a weapon, suggesting he ultimately deserved a better fate.
Nanami Came Back To Jujutsu Out Of A Sense Of Duty
Death: Shibuya Incident Arc
Nanami immediately resonated with fans when he was introduced. He served as another guide for Yuji, and his insightful advice, combined with their fun interactions, made him a highlight of the early Jujutsu Kaisen story.
Nanami initially gave up being a sorcerer because it was too dangerous. He tried living a normal life, but realized cursed spirits were a constant threat even in everyday situations. Feeling obligated, he reluctantly returned to fighting them, despite wanting to retire. Sadly, he ultimately died doing the job he disliked, dreaming of a peaceful retirement in Malaysia. In a deeply emotional moment, his final act was entrusting everything to Yuji.
All Choso Ever Wanted Was To Help His Younger Brothers
Death: Shinjuku Showdown Arc
One of the most heartbreaking moments in the series occurs when Choso sacrifices himself to save Yuji from Sukuna’s deadly attack. Despite initially being presented as a villain, Choso proves his redemption through his unwavering loyalty to Yuji and his dedication to shielding his younger siblings.
Throughout Jujutsu Kaisen, Choso consistently proved his heroic nature, willingly risking everything to protect his brother, Yuji. It’s particularly heartbreaking because, as shown in Modulo, he was poised to be the only person still with Yuji after so many years, offering him companionship and potentially saving him from his current loneliness.
Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
