I’m a huge anime fan, and it’s clear to me that shonen series are the most popular out there! But honestly, because they’re often made for younger audiences, they don’t always dive into really complex or dark stories. Still, there are some shonen anime that really surprised me by tackling some seriously heavy themes. It’s not super common, and I wish we saw more of it, but these series definitely stand out from the crowd by not shying away from darkness.
Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan is hugely popular and considered one of the greatest action anime ever made. Many fans believe it’s a more mature ‘seinen’ series, but it’s actually a ‘shonen’ anime that simply explores very dark and complex topics. The fact that so many people think it’s a seinen shows just how intense and serious the show can be.
Attack on Titan centers around Eren Jaeger and his friends, whose world is shattered when giant, human-eating creatures called Titans invade their home. Fueled by a desire for revenge and a quest to uncover the Titans’ origins, Eren embarks on a journey filled with unexpected twists and reveals, leading to some of the most compelling and often disturbing storylines in anime history.
Chainsaw Man
Chainsaw Man is a manga created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, a highly experienced comic artist. While published in Weekly Shonen Jump, it often pushes boundaries with its mature content. Though categorized as a shonen manga, Chainsaw Man explores surprisingly dark themes and powerfully depicts the darker side of human nature through its unique characters, called Devils. It’s more than just a story about fighting monsters; it delves into complex and profound human emotions.
Denji’s life is a stark and difficult journey, going from extreme poverty and a constant struggle for survival to finally finding a chance at normalcy, only to be confronted with the complexities and often darker sides of human nature. Despite the restrictions of his publishing platform, author Fujimoto excels at crafting compelling and often grim narratives, skillfully weaving mature and challenging themes into the story.
Jujutsu Kaisen
Jujutsu Kaisen is a classic action series focusing on sorcerers who fight evil spirits born from human negativity. The protagonist, Yuji Itadori, fits the typical hero mold, but the series stands out due to its surprisingly dark and violent themes. In recent years, Jujutsu Kaisen has become known for having some of the most shocking and graphic deaths in all of action anime, which really sets it apart from other shows in the genre.
I’ve noticed that most action anime, or ‘Shonen,’ tend to protect their characters, but Jujutsu Kaisen is different. The creator, Gege Akutami, has openly said they want viewers to feel uneasy about their favorite characters – they don’t want anyone to feel safe! And it really shows in the story; no one is guaranteed to survive. Honestly, even just looking at the surface, Jujutsu Kaisen is a pretty dark series.

What initially seemed like a simple story quickly turned dark, revealing the children were being raised as food for demons who particularly enjoyed human flesh. This discovery sparked a thrilling fight for survival led by a group of remarkably intelligent children. The series also delves into the complicated dynamic between humans and these demon creatures.
The core idea behind The Promised Neverland is already quite disturbing, but the story quickly becomes truly horrifying as it develops. Even though many fans were disappointed with how the story concluded, it still stands out as a landmark dark Shonen anime.
One Piece
As a huge fan, I’ve always loved One Piece, and it’s amazing how, over its many years, it’s really dug into some surprisingly heavy stuff. It doesn’t always seem dark at first glance, but One Piece has tackled incredibly difficult themes like slavery, human trafficking, and even genocide. A lot of the biggest moments and storylines actually revolve around people being oppressed and fighting for their freedom – it’s a really powerful part of what makes the series so compelling.
At first glance, One Piece seems like a fun adventure about a boy dreaming of being a pirate. However, the story hides surprisingly dark themes. Even the quest for the legendary ‘One Piece’ treasure is tied to a tragic past – a century of history deliberately erased by the World Government after a terrible massacre. Eiichiro Oda masterfully portrays this world filled with cruelty and darkness throughout his manga.
