6-Sided Stories review

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from the grandeur of AAA titles to the simplicity of indie games. Yet, 6-Sided Stories has managed to carve out a unique niche for itself amidst this vast landscape.

As the days grow shorter and cooler, and we find ourselves longing for comfortable, cozy nights, an ideal indie game appears just in time for autumn – 6-Sided Stories. This delightful puzzle game follows the escapades of a charming calico cat and its animal companions.

This jigsaw puzzle offers 40 challenges across varying seasons, providing an unique twist in its design. The intricate hand-drawn pixel art is divided into hexagonal pieces that you need to rotate and adjust to fit with their adjacent parts. Gradually, you’ll piece together a harmonious scene before moving on to the next one, where each season narrates a brief story. The controls are straightforward; just press one button to select your tile and another to rotate it around its axis.

As a fan, I’m excited to embark on this unique puzzle adventure! Initially, you’ll find just one move per piece, keeping things simple and straightforward. However, as we progress, tiles will multiply and shrink, adding complexity to the gameplay. Pieces can also be rotated in various directions for an added twist, and there’s even a fascinating option to flip the color palette of each piece.

If you’d like to simplify your experience in 6-Sided Stories, you can peek at the final image for some guidance, similar to peeking under a jigsaw puzzle lid to know where a certain part belongs. The game itself will subtly help you by shaking an incorrect piece if you spend too much time trying to fit it into the wrong spot within the image.

6-Sided Stories review

As a music enthusiast and avid gamer, what truly captivates me about this game is its lo-fi soundtrack. The mellow jazzy melodies provide an ideal soundscape for unwinding during a peaceful gaming session filled with flipping and subtle puzzles. These tracks are the work of independent artists I hadn’t been familiar with before, but now they’re on constant rotation in my playlists. The ability to switch songs at any moment ensures there’s always a tune that matches my mood perfectly.

My only real complaint has to be the brevity of the story. Coming in under three hours, I couldn’t fathom where the time had gone as the credits rolled. I’m sure that I only sat down for five minutes. There’s plenty of room for further puzzles and I will be sorely disappointed if we don’t get some more in the form of DLC further down the line.

6-Sided Stories offers a comforting escape, ideal for unwinding next to a cozy fireplace, a mug of warm hot cocoa, and your favorite pair of slippers. Brief yet delightfully satisfying, it invites you to unwind within its gentle hold for a couple of hours.
