6 Super Mario Games That You Can’t Play on the Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 is almost the ideal console for playing Super Mario games, but there are six titles holding it back from being perfect. Because it can play older games and with access to the Nintendo Classics library through Switch Online, the Switch 2 lets you enjoy most Super Mario games, both 2D and 3D, from throughout the series’ history.

You can play almost any classic Super Mario game on the Switch 2, from the very first Super Mario Bros. on the NES to the latest release, Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Because the Switch 2 works with existing Switch games, everything you could play on the original Switch is also playable on the new one. But there’s still potential to make the Switch 2 the perfect way to experience Super Mario games.

As of right now, there are still six classic Super Mario games I’m hoping to see on the Switch 2. I’m bummed that New Super Mario Bros. from the DS isn’t available, and the Wii version, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, is also missing. I’d love to replay Super Mario 3D Land and New Super Mario Bros. 2 from the 3DS, but those aren’t there yet either. Super Mario Maker from the Wii U is another one I’m keeping my fingers crossed for. And sadly, my mobile game, Super Mario Run, isn’t playable on the new system. It’s good news though – they did finally bring Super Mario Galaxy 2 over to the Switch last October, so hopefully they’ll keep adding more!

List of Super Mario Games Not Playable on Switch 2

  • New Super Mario Bros.
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Maker
  • Super Mario Run

Will these games be available on the Switch and the upcoming Switch 2? It’s hard to say for sure. New Super Mario Bros. was previously released on the Wii U Virtual Console, which shows Nintendo is open to making DS games available on other systems. It’s possible Nintendo will eventually add DS games to its Nintendo Classics collection, and that could be how New Super Mario Bros. ends up on the Switch.

There’s a possibility that New Super Mario Bros. Wii could be released on a newer system, especially since other Super Mario games from the Wii era are already available on the Switch 2. Some people might feel it’s unnecessary with New Super Mario Bros. U already out, but despite their similar look, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a unique game. While it would benefit from updated graphics, many fans who already own the original might happily buy it again just for that improvement.

You can play Super Mario Sunshine on Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 through the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. Nintendo also plans to add it to the Nintendo Classics library, making it even more accessible for Switch 2 owners.

As a big Nintendo fan, I’ve been thinking about what 3DS games they might bring to the Switch next. We’ve already seen some remakes, and I really hope they consider Super Mario 3D Land and New Super Mario Bros. 2! Super Mario Maker is a little more complicated, though. We have Super Mario Maker 2 on Switch now, which is amazing, but the original 3DS version had unique levels and content you can’t find anywhere else. The 3DS game even had a ton of levels made by Nintendo themselves that were exclusive to that version. Maybe they could bring those levels back in a remake or something? That would be awesome!

It’s very unlikely that Super Mario Run will appear on the Switch 2. The game was designed specifically for mobile, and endless runners don’t typically translate well to consoles where players expect full character control. While Nintendo might eventually add it to the eShop to complete the Super Mario series on the platform, don’t count on it.
