6 Unanswered Questions After Thunderbolts* Ending

In simpler terms, the plot of Thunderbolts is easy to understand. The character Valentina Allegra de Fontaine served as a CIA director before moving into covert operations for her O.X.E. organization. These undercover activities led to impeachment hearings in the film. To distance herself from the swirling black rumors, she chooses to burn all her assets, including both the heroes and villains she had hired on her team.

In the Marvel Comics series, Thunderbolts, Yelena Belova, U.S. Agent, Taskmaster, and Ghost come together with a seemingly innocent motive: to take each other out under false pretenses. However, as they navigate their shared past and confront their common enemy, Valentina, these anti-heroes find an opportunity to unite against her. As the story unfolds, some questions remain unanswered, leaving room for further exploration of their complicated relationships and potential future alliances.

6. What Were The New Avengers Doing For Fourteen Months?

Must Be Nice To Be On A Wheaties Box

At the movie’s conclusion, it appears that Valentina deceives the Thunderbolts into transforming into the New Avengers. Normally, viewers might ponder if this change would be permanent. However, since there’s a time jump of about fourteen months, many fans have speculated that this new team configuration has been in place during that period. The lineup includes Bob and a leaner Alexei as well.

Despite Bob not being able to utilize his powers at the moment, what tasks have the rest of the team been accomplishing over the past fourteen months? Is there a possibility that this storyline could extend into a future movie sequel or a TV series on Disney+? Given the precise timeline, it appears Marvel/Disney has left some wiggle room for potential continuation.

5. Will There Be Another Civil War?

The Copyright Wars Are Coming

In this latest scene of the New Avengers, there’s a disagreement about who holds the copyright for the name. Sam Wilson, now the recognized Captain America, believes he has control over the Avengers name. This point connects with Captain America: Brave New World, as President Ross encouraged Sam to establish a fresh team of Avengers.

By the closing scenes of that film, it appears as though establishing a new team is more of a fantasy than a reality, given President Ross’s imprisonment and Sam’s apparent disinterest. It’s questionable whether Sam would go to such lengths as suing for naming rights. Might someone like Matt Murdock (Daredevil) or Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk) be assisting Sam in these legal matters? This situation has the potential to escalate into a dispute reminiscent of the Civil War, but this time centered around the rights to a name – an idea that feels almost too absurd for reality, yet is not entirely impossible. It’s a plot twist that could easily have originated from Deadpool’s mind, but it could actually unfold in this universe.

4. Is Valentina On The Level Now?

Once A Schemer, Always A Schemer

The character of Valentina holds more responsibility for the film’s issues than either Sentry/Void or Taskmaster, despite there being two main antagonists in Thunderbolts. Although Valentina lacks physical strength, she possesses intellectual prowess and social influence, making her a greater danger compared to Taskmaster, who was initially presented as part of the team, but was swiftly eliminated by Ava, causing surprise among viewers.

Originally, it was quite cunning of her to assemble the key heroes with the intention of eliminating them, but unfortunately, her strategy fell apart. In an attempt to contact Bob under his Sentry identity, she ended up triggering a transformation into Void instead, due to her overzealousness. Despite not facing death, impeachment, and the U.S. now seemingly acknowledging her New Avengers team, this turn of events can be seen as a net positive for her. The question remains: will she continue to deceive the New Avengers through underhanded schemes or will Valentina finally choose the honest path for once?

3. Is Bob Going To Be Okay?

Can Ge Control His Powers Or Will He Become A Villain Again?

In Thunderbolts, Bob’s character is somewhat enigmatic as he suffers from amnesia and stumbles upon a conflict involving anti-heroes. He claims to be an ordinary individual, but later discovers Valentina was responsible for his creation through Project Sentry. Despite knowing that Valentina attempted to eliminate him and other characters in the storage vault, she somehow convinces Bob to assume the role of Earth’s new protector.

This situation causes Bob to become uncontrollable while assuming the identity of Void, but fortunately, Yelena manages to soothe him. As was stated earlier, in the forward flash, Bob spends most of his time at the old Avengers headquarters performing routine chores such as washing dishes or reading. Will he regain control over his powers at some point in the future, or is he too powerful, similar to Captain Marvel, to function normally?

2. The Fantastic Four Arrive

Are They From The Sacred Timeline?

Titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” this upcoming film is slated for release in July 2025, marking the first big-screen appearance of the characters since 2015’s reboot. Since that attempt didn’t pan out, Marvel/Disney are now introducing these heroes anew into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Set in the past, viewers have been curious about how this film fits with the Sacred Timeline, as none of the MCU characters have previously acknowledged these superheroes.

In the future scene from Thunderbolts, the New Avengers spot a spaceship with a large “4” emblem, hinting at potential possibilities. At the conclusion of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the team might have been stranded in space and are now returning to the current time, much like Steve Rogers who was frozen at the end of his first film, only to be defrosted for The Avengers and not age. Alternatively, The Fantastic Four could hail from a different timeline and somehow found themselves in the prime Earth-616 reality via the power of wormholes. Therefore, we’re left wondering which scenario is accurate.

1. Is Taskmaster Really Dead?

Kind Of Surprising If Yes

Among the most distressing moments viewers faced was watching Taskmaster perish quite early in the film. Notably, Ava, also known as Ghost, was the one who ended her life with a swift shot to the head. This seems like a rather abrupt conclusion for the character, considering that the room subsequently caught fire.

It’s odd that her death appeared so sudden, as if it were just a temporary setback. Could it be possible that Taskmaster acquired healing abilities like Wolverine and survived the fire trap? If this were true, we would expect her to reappear in later scenes of the movie. Given the unpredictable nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though, it’s hard to say for certain. Perhaps Taskmaster was indeed killed, but cloning is a possibility or someone else could take up the mantle of Taskmaster.
