Lots of anime series have become popular in Western countries, but some haven’t had the same luck. There are several huge anime in Japan that either aren’t very well-known here, or are almost completely unknown to most anime fans. You might be surprised by how much more popular they are in Japan!
Sazae-san
Many fans may not be familiar with it, but Sazae-san is a hugely popular and long-running anime and manga series. It centers around Sazae-san and her family, showing the simple, everyday moments of their lives. Because the show is generally quite gentle and low-key, it hasn’t become as internationally well-known as series like One Piece or Dragon Ball.
Even though Sazae-san isn’t well-known internationally, it’s hugely popular in Japan. The original manga is among the best-selling comics ever, and the anime has officially been recognized as the longest-running animated TV series in the world. While it hasn’t gained much traction outside of Japan, Sazae-san has been a national favorite for many years.
Lupin the Third
Although not completely unknown, the Lupin the Third series is much more popular in Japan than in other countries. It’s become a frequent reference point in other anime, and Japan has often recognized and celebrated its impact.

Doraemon
Many anime fans in the West fondly remember shows like Dragon Ball, Pokemon, and Digimon. However, Doraemon never achieved the same level of popularity here as it has in Japan. In Japan, Doraemon is incredibly influential – the character is a cultural icon and was even named Japan’s first anime ambassador.

Chibi Maruko-chan
Lots of relaxing, everyday-life anime shows are well-known, but Chibi Maruko-chan hasn’t become as popular internationally despite being a long-running hit in Japan. The original manga series lasted for 16 years and also spawned anime films, TV series, and even live-action dramas.
The show centers around the everyday adventures of Maruko-chan. Originally airing in 1995, it’s still running today and, with over 1,400 episodes, is one of the longest-running anime series ever made, alongside Sazae-san. Chibi Maruko-chan appears to be more popular with viewers in Japan than with anime fans internationally. While it may not gain much traction outside of Japan, it looks set to remain a long-lasting success within the country.
Detective Conan
I’m a huge fan of Detective Conan, and honestly, it’s massive in the anime world! It’s a little surprising though, because while it has a dedicated fanbase outside of Japan, it’s never quite reached the same level of popularity internationally as it has in its home country. It’s a real gem that deserves more recognition!
Some of the series’ initial struggles in the U.S. were due to changes made for the American market. Its original title, ‘Detective Conan,’ was altered to ‘Case Closed,’ character names were Americanized, and it didn’t receive much promotion. Compared to other popular shows at the time, it also lacked the same visual appeal.
Crayon Shin-chan
Even though Crayon Shin-chan features a young main character, it’s not just for kids. The show often includes jokes and suggestive themes that are better suited for a more mature audience.
I’m a huge fan of Shin-chan! The show is all about the hilarious chaos Shin and his family get into, and honestly, Shin is such a unique character – he’s memorable, though sometimes for being a bit of a troublemaker! It’s always felt very specifically Japanese in its humor and style, which might be why it hasn’t become massively popular over here. But if you’re looking for something a little different, it’s definitely worth checking out – it’s a fun ride!
Gintama
Gintama is a fantastic action-comedy anime, considered one of the best modern shonen series. Although it has a dedicated fanbase around the world, it hasn’t achieved the widespread popularity of other well-known anime like Dragon Ball, One Piece, or Naruto. While known for its humor, Gintama also delivers impressive action sequences and meaningful character growth in its longer story arcs.
Much of the comedy in Gintama relies on knowledge of Japanese pop culture, which can make some jokes difficult for international viewers to understand. Often, episodes include footnotes explaining these references in the subtitles. This, combined with the fact that it hasn’t been widely promoted outside of Japan like other popular anime, explains why Gintama, despite being a great series, has remained a more niche or ‘cult’ favorite in many countries.
