7 Best JRPGs Set In Shibuya

It’s likely that my longstanding fondness for video games has led me to develop an affinity towards Japan, where the gaming industry thrives. I adore sushi, admire the unique aesthetics of anime, and naturally enjoy a wide range of video games.

One location in Japan has always held a special allure for me, even though I haven’t physically been there. That’s the Shibuya district, which I’ve explored extensively through various virtual journeys. It’s an energetic and vibrant area, but it’s surprising how few JRPG games have managed to capture its essence.

Fortunately, the JRPGs that predominantly unfolded in Shibuya have been a remarkable collection. Here are some of the select few top-tier JRPG journeys set within Shibuya.

7.
Persona 5 Tactica

A Dream of Shibuya

For some of us, there was a sense of uncertainty regarding what Persona 5 Tactica would bring to the table. Instead of adhering to the established rules seen in the series, it offered a tactical journey filled with many beloved characters from Persona 5 Royal.

Although the game seems to be set in a fantastical dream-like realm, it’s equally accurate to say that its creation is rooted in the collective imagination of numerous individuals residing and working in Shibuya.

In contrast to the fantastical elements found in Persona 5 Tactics, this game turned out to be a delightful tactical role-playing game in the JRPG genre. Unveiling certain thought-provoking truths is part of the experience, while also appreciating the fresh characters that have been introduced.

As we delve further into this list, we’re transitioning from an idealistic setting to the practical, urban atmosphere of Shibuya.

6.
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Digital Champions

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth balances both worlds effectively. About half the game unfolds in realistic settings such as Shibuya, while the remaining half transports you into the virtual landscape of EDEN.

The story is all about a hacker turned detective using his Digimon allies to unearth the truth.

In terms of its play mechanics, the game offers around 300 unique creatures that can be collected and evolved into more powerful forms.

The game Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth had enough appeal to warrant a sequel, Hacker’s Memory, however it doesn’t stand out as the most impressive title in this specific list based on the Shiubya universe.

5.
SMT IV: Apocalypse

Post-Apocalyptic Tokyo

During the DS and 3DS years, I immersed myself deeply in numerous RPG adventures, particularly because ATLUS launched a multitude of them then. One standout title for me was Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse.

In this game, I find myself navigating through the ruins of a post-apocalyptic Tokyo and the enchanting medieval realm of Mikado. The narrative is set in these two distinct yet captivating settings.

You play Nanashi, the so-called Godslayer, torn between the lure of angels and demons.

Despite having a playstyle similar to other games in the series, SMT IV: Apocalypse remains a skillfully crafted, captivating dark JRPG journey. This isn’t the Shibuya we initially anticipated, but it’s an experience you’ll eventually grow fond of.

4.
NEO: The World Ends With You

A Surprising Sequel

Expressing my enthusiasm for the original “The World Ends With You” might not quite capture its extent. Remarkably, I didn’t anticipate this captivating story would ever receive a follow-up.

Luckily, NEO: TWEWY unfolded just as expected! Similar to its predecessor, the story unfolds right within Shibuya, giving players a chance to traverse the lively area in an upgraded 3D setting.

Gladly, they maintained the stunning cel-shaded anime aesthetic that set the initial game apart from the crowd, and I can’t wait to dive back into this visually captivating world!

In the second installment, it masterfully adapts intricate battles to a fresh setting. It’s a truly exceptional journey, and the final chapters offer an extraordinary climax.

3.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

Fire Emblem and SMT Unite!

Platform Wii U
Publisher Nintendo of America
Genre JRPG
Release Date December 26, 2015

It’s common knowledge that the Wii U faced criticism for its limited game selection and the unpopularity of its Gamepad. However, there was one game I couldn’t get enough of – Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE.

This console game was precisely the kind of exciting journey I was hoping for, and it surpassed all my anticipations. Not only did it introduce a charming ensemble of outcasts from both the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem universes, but it showcased stunning aesthetics as well.

To keep up the excitement, the game’s battles were an absolute blast and offered fresh, innovative twists on the mechanics typically seen in SMT series games.

The main drawback of this adventure was that after completing it, there wasn’t much left to engage with. However, additional insights were provided in the updated version, titled “Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore“, which is now available on Switch.

2.
Persona 5 Royal

Steal My Heart

For the sake of clarity, let me state that if these last items were separate lists, they’d each take the number one spot. They are all extraordinary adventures that hold a special place in my heart.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my delight over Persona 5 Royal. The anticipation was intense, with the game seemingly forever out of reach on the Nintendo Switch. But when it finally arrived, oh boy, did I immerse myself in its captivating world! Over a hundred hours flew by as if they were minutes, lost in the thrilling journey this masterpiece offered.

It was evident that the Phantom Thieves were indeed a formidable group, given my affinity for the teams from both Persona 3 and Persona 4 Golden.

Apart from that, let me add another thought: Beyond doubt, Persona 5 Royal is a remarkable JRPG. Yet, the upcoming game has managed to capture my heart in a way that no other adventure has before.

1.
The World Ends With You

Neku’s Redemption

Platform Nintendo DS
Publisher Square Enix
Genre JRPG, ARPG
Release Date July 27, 2007

Rarely in life do we encounter moments that drastically shift our perspectives and trajectories. Moments that make us see the world anew. For me, one such experience was a game called “The World Ends With You,” often abbreviated as TWEWY.

Initially, I had no clue about the nature of the game when I started playing it, and my decision was influenced by a positive review I found online. Little did I know, that article would lead me to become captivated in this enchantingly peculiar rendition of Shibuya.

In the realm of TWEWY, everything was distinctively original – right from the innovative stylus controls, intricate time-management system, to the strategic use of Pins in combat. Mastering each element was a challenge, yet the game consistently rewarded the players for their diligence.

Beyond everything else, this game had an engaging plot and unforgettable characters. It was unique enough to be adapted for mobile platforms, receive the Final Remix upgrade, have an excellent animated show made about it, and ultimately lead to a sequel titled NEO: TWEWY.

Truly a one-of-a-kind adventure, and the prime reason I am so eager to one day visit Shibuya.
