Sukuna

Akaza

The writing isn’t necessarily the strongest aspect of Demon Slayer, but it does feature a truly compelling villain in Akaza.
While Akaza isn’t the most powerful demon – he’s only Upper Rank Three – he’s arguably the most compelling villain created by Koyoharu Gotouge. He made a strong impression during the Mugen Train arc, but his character truly shined in the Infinity Castle arc. His tragic backstory, revealing his relationships with his wife and martial arts master, resonated deeply with fans, evoking both sympathy and sadness. Unlike other antagonists like Muzan or Doma, many viewers found themselves genuinely caring for Akaza and understanding his motivations.
Macht
- Anime Frieren Beyond Journey’s End
In 2023, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End quickly became the highest-rated anime ever. The show returned in 2026 with a second season of 10 episodes, and introduced its strongest villain so far: Macht. Macht proves to be a more formidable opponent than even Aura the Guillotine.
Macht is a fascinating villain introduced during the Golden Land arc. Though he’s a demon, he stands out from typical villains in the series. His complex story has quickly made him a fan favorite and one of the most anticipated characters. While the anime hasn’t fully revealed Macht’s backstory yet, viewers will need to wait until Frieren Season 3 in 2027 to see the complete adaptation of the Golden Land arc and learn more about him.
Suirei
- Anime: The Apothecary Diaries
The Apothecary Diaries is a fantastic anime geared towards older audiences, set in Imperial China. The story centers around Maomao and features several interconnected plots and challenges in each episode, though each season also has a main villain. Many fans consider it one of the best new anime series, and Suirei is a particularly well-developed antagonist. In the first season, Suirei schemes to assassinate Jinshi, proving herself to be a clever and resourceful character—she’s even capable of faking her own death.
Suirei’s full story isn’t revealed until Season 2, when we learn she’s a member of the Imperial Family. She then goes through a journey of redemption, and her character will be developed even more in Season 3 now that her time as a villain is over.

Dabura Karaba
- Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen
The popular manga series Jujutsu Kaisen concluded in 2024. However, the author, Gege Akutami, later released a short sequel titled Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo between 2025 and 2026. This new story takes place 68 years after the Shinjuku Showdown and introduces a new villain named Dabura Karaba, who belongs to the Deskunte tribe of the Simurian race.
Even though Dabura is presented as a villain in Modulo, he’s not actually malicious. He fights only to keep a promise he made to a friend and to secure a home for the Rumelians. This compelling backstory and his impressive power have quickly made him a popular character among fans of the JJK series, despite the manga being relatively short. Some fans even believe Dabura is a better-written character than Sukuna.
Nowak

While the anime features many villains, Makima, the Control Devil, stands out as a truly memorable antagonist from Part 1.
