Anime, with its unique style, often pushes boundaries by exploring various genres creatively, and romance is no exception. For instance, the series titled “Inuyasha” transports us to an alternate world called “isekai,” where a teenage girl finds herself in feudal Japan and develops romantic feelings for a demon. Though it may seem unusual, the story manages to resolve their relationship satisfactorily.
In “Midori Days,” our main character’s affection for life takes an unusual turn when it manifests as a puppet that permanently adheres to his hand. Despite its strangeness, the two characters eventually develop feelings for each other. Moving on, these unorthodox romance anime productions conclude on a more tragic note, so here’s a rundown of their grim endings.

In Japan, Light, an exceptional student, finds himself growing weary of the routine nature of society. One fateful day at school, he stumbles upon a mysterious book titled Death Note. This book allows him to take lives by simply writing the names of individuals within its pages, under the guidance of a supernatural entity called a Shinigami. With this newfound power, Light transforms into a serial killer, though he justifies his actions as being for the betterment of mankind.
As a die-hard fan, I acquire a companion named Misa, who’s deeply enamored with the character of Light. However, truth be told, my feelings for her are as cold as winter ice. I manipulate Misa, who herself possesses a Death Note, and orchestrate the demise of her associated Shinigami. For a while, I manage to escape the law’s grasp, but eventually, the police close in on me, trapping Light. In the end, it’s my Shinigami that claims my life. Despite being aware of the abuse, the series concludes enigmatically, suggesting that Misa may be on the verge of taking her own life, bereft of Light’s presence by her side.

Chainsaw Man revolves around the hard-luck character, Denji, who acquires the ability to battle demons by transforming into the main character known as Chainsaw Man. He’s enlisted by Makima, who oversees a local branch dedicated to hunting demons. Denji longs for a comfortable place to rest, sustenance, and a deeper connection with Makima beyond their professional relationship. Although she is not entirely captivated by him, she agrees to this arrangement where he can touch her if he complies with her requests.
Through a series of manipulations, Denji ultimately ends up killing his Devil Hunter comrade, Aki. This revelation serves as a double spoiler since it refers to events from the manga that have not yet been adapted for screen. In addition to Aki, Power and Makima also meet their demises due to these manipulations. It is expected that these incidents will be addressed in season two. What makes this situation particularly disturbing is that Makima is reincarnated as Nayuta, a young girl who Denji must care for despite the havoc she has wreaked in his life.

Despite their age difference and Haruko’s manipulative nature, Naota expresses affection for Haruko, a sentiment that isn’t reciprocated. Where To Even Begin?
![](https://static0.gamerantimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/gendo-and-yui-in-neon-genesis-evangelion.jpg)
The captivating anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion, demands a minimum of two viewings to grasp its intricate narrative. In this futuristic setting, entities resembling angels, known as Angels, pose a dire threat to mankind. To counter this menace, a Japanese entity called NERV employs mech-like structures named EVA Units. Gendo serves as the head of NERV, who tragically lost his wife, Yui, during the early stages of the EVA project development. However, it’s not that she perished conventionally; instead, her soul inhabited EVA Unit 01, which her son, Shinji, now operates.
Moreover, Gendo created Rei using Yui’s cloned DNA and that of an angel named Lilith. Gendo acts as a father figure towards Rei, yet it’s unsettling how he seems to favor her over his actual son Shinji. This unusual affection for Yui/Rei eventually leads to Gendo’s downfall, as Rei becomes the catalyst for total destruction, effectively ending humanity. In the aftermath, Shinji is left to bear the burden of reconstruction in eternal torment. To put it simply, there aren’t many anime series that push boundaries quite like Neon Genesis Evangelion.
