7 Days To Die: How To Get Honey (And What It’s Used For)

As a seasoned survivor of the zombie apocalypse, I can confidently say that honey has become one of my most valued resources in 7 Days to Die. Its healing properties have saved me from countless infected bites, and its versatility in crafting has made it an essential item for any player’s inventory.

Even though it was launched over a decade back, the game 7 Days To Die is currently attracting unprecedented numbers of players thanks to its consistent flow of high-quality updates. A significant number of newcomers are downloading this game. Upon initial loading, it might feel a bit confusing to understand what actions to take and where to navigate.

As a die-hard movie buff diving into this game world, let me tell you, everything seems intent on taking you down! Be prepared for encounters with enemies, traps, hazards lurking around every corner, and more. One inescapable reality is the infection that every player will face at some point. But fear not, here comes honey to the rescue! This guide aims to shed light on this precious and scrumptious find.

What Does Honey Do?

Honey does two main things: it tops up the player’s hunger level, and it cures infections.

Curing Infections With Honey

Regardless of your precautions, it’s inevitable that you’ll contract the zombie virus eventually while playing this game. Each enemy has a possibility to infect you when they successfully attack, and once infected, a progress bar will appear in the lower corner of your screen. This bar increases over time until the infection is cured. If the bar reaches 100%, it’s game over for you.

In my experience, the progression of this infection might seem sluggish at first, but each encounter with an enemy serves to speed it up. If you find yourself infected partway through clearing a challenging Point of Interest (POI), be prepared for the infection to worsen swiftly as you continue your sweep. However, here’s some good news: consuming honey can help slow the infection’s advance. Each jar reduces the rate by 5%, and if you consume two jars, that total reduction doubles to 10%.

Curing an infection doesn’t happen instantly. When you take a cure, the infection icon at the bottom of the screen will turn white and the number will start to tick down. If the icon turns back to an orange color, that means that your cure has worn off and your infection is slowly growing again. Honey is the lowest quality infection cure; however, it’s also the easiest to come by. The other cures are Herbal Antibiotics, and Antibiotics.

Honey As A Food Item

To clarify, honey not only fills up the player’s hunger meter but also adds to their health. Initially, ingesting honey provides 8 food points and 3 health points. Although it can be useful in an emergency situation, it’s more advantageous to reserve honey for treating infections.

Honey can also be used to craft Grandpa’s Awesome Sauce, a special drink that gives you better trader prices for 3 minutes. While you can purchase this drink from traders and from vending machines, it is rather costly to buy. In addition, crafting Grandpa’s Awesome Sauce gives you a 10% bartering discount. To craft it, you’ll need the following:

  • 1 Jar Of Honey
  • 50 Dukes
  • 5 Mushrooms
  • 10 Gas Can
  • 1 Ear Of Super Corn

Getting Honey From Tree Stumps

To gather honey most effectively, focus on searching tree stumps predominantly found in pine forests and snow biomes. Upon breaking these down, you’ll obtain wood as a byproduct. There’s a 20% chance that some honey will be obtained when the entire stump is destroyed, but this increases to 40% if the stump resides within a Point of Interest (POI). The Journey’s End Retirement Home, particularly, is an ideal POI for honey collection due to the presence of numerous tree stumps within its boundaries.

Getting Honey From Traders

As a film enthusiast diving into this immersive world, I’ve noticed that traders’ inventories can sometimes feel a bit haphazard. However, there are two key factors determining what treasures a trader holds: your character’s progression, or loot stage, and the unique nature of each individual trader.

Each trader varies in what they tend to sell. Trader Rekt specializes in food and seeds, meaning that he’ll have a slightly higher chance of stocking honey. Trader Jen specializes in medicinal items, so she also has a good chance of stocking honey in her inventory. It’s worth checking in with the traders every few days as their stock changes fairly often.

Upon finishing tasks for a merchant, occasionally, you might get some honey as part of your compensation when you go back to collect it. Alternatively, they could offer you a choice between a standard or premium cure. Remember to carefully consider all the potential rewards before choosing an option.

How To Get Honey Early On

In the game, it’s quite straightforward to obtain honey on your first try. As you progress through each play session, you’ll be presented with a series of tasks. One of these tasks involves collecting a specific amount (5) of honey jars from tree stumps. If you keep tabs on this task, it will indicate nearby tree stumps with an orange symbol, making them easy to locate. Completing this task early on, after finishing your initial challenges, can help you accumulate several jars of honey for infection cure production by the end of day one.

Finding Honey In Loot Containers

In some instances, the contents of loot boxes are influenced by the level you’re playing at. Additionally, enhancing your Master Chef skill to level two could potentially boost the odds of discovering edible items, such as honey, in garbage cans. This skill can prove quite beneficial given that honey is categorized as a food item.

For the most part, you’ll find honey inside Shamway crates and food piles, which can be found inside grocery stores and kitchens. You may also find these containers at the end of a POI as one of the main loot crates. If you check these loot crates, invest a couple of points in Master Chef, and check dumpsters, you will end up with a pretty impressive honey stockpile in no time.

A Book That Increases Your Honey Finding Odds

In the game 7 Days to Die, there are numerous book sets to gather and read. Among these books, the “Wasteland Treasures Volume 1” provides a slight opportunity to gather honey from regular trees. Compared to chopping down tree stumps, the chance of getting honey from cutting down a tree is significantly less. Given that you’ll frequently be chopping down trees for building and crafting materials, this book offers a pleasant bonus to the amount of honey you’ll accumulate over time.
