7 Devil May Cry Characters Netflix Should Bring Back ASAP!

Summary

  • Devil May Cry Netflix is a reboot, deviating from the original game storyline.
  • Including familiar characters like Nero, Nico, and Trish may enhance the series.
  • Season two could introduce more characters, like Lucia or Leon S. Kennedy, creating a Capcom multiverse.

As an ardent admirer, I have to admit that the Netflix adaptation of “Devil May Cry” deviates from the 2001 game, but this isn’t necessarily a letdown. Instead, it serves as a fresh start or another attempt at capturing what makes Dante such an exceptional demon slayer. In the first season, only a select few characters will be familiar to fans, which might disappoint some, but I believe it was a strategic decision.

Introducing too many characters from the “Devil May Cry” series during the first season could spoil the suspense for future seasons if Netflix continues to produce it. For instance, Alucard was merely hinted at in the first season of the “Castlevania” adaptation on Netflix, so which characters should make an appearance in season two? Is there room for characters that don’t fit the usual mold?

There will be spoilers ahead.

6. Nero

Johnny’s Other Self

Initially, Dante was the lead character across the first three Devil May Cry games. However, a new protagonist named Nero took over in Devil May Cry 4, who was a young demon hunter affiliated with the church and quick to learn following an assault. Despite this, Dante made appearances to guide Nero, much like Solid Snake being replaced by Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. While some fans appreciated the change, others were not entirely pleased with Nero as the new main character.

As a movie enthusiast and a fan of the Devil May Cry series, I must admit that Nero’s character received a significant boost in the fifth installment. He was no longer the whiny lad we knew before; instead, he demonstrated an impressive understanding of his role. Moreover, he was equipped with a sleek cybernetic arm, adding a new layer to the gameplay experience. This badass addition allowed him to perform some jaw-dropping maneuvers like pulling demons towards him for intricate combo moves.

While it might be premature to introduce Nero in the second season of the Netflix anime, given that Dante is still relatively young, the thought of seeing Nero at some point down the line remains tantalizingly exciting. It’s amusing to note that Johnny Yong Bosch, who lends his voice to Dante in the anime, was also the man behind Nero in the games.

5. Nicoletta “Nico” Goldstein

Every Hero Needs A Mechanic

If Nero is part of the second season on Netflix, he must bring his companion with him. Known as Nicoletta or simply Nico, she made her debut in Devil May Cry 5 as Nero’s mechanic for upgrades. Although she doesn’t fight, she boasts some of the most impressive moves in the game whenever Nero requires an upgrade.

1. It’s a mystery how Nico manages to navigate her van through those dungeons. Despite not being a playable character, Nico is far from the stereotypical southern belle, demonstrating self-reliance. The second season could benefit from more female characters, and Nico, along with a few other intriguing characters from the franchise, would be great additions.

2. It’s puzzling how Nico manages to drive her van through some of those dungeons. Although she’s not a playable character, Nico deviates from the typical southern belle image by being capable and independent. The second season could use more female characters, and Nico, along with several other compelling franchise characters, would be excellent additions.

3. It’s a wonder how Nico manages to drive her van through those dungeons. While she isn’t a playable character, Nico doesn’t fit the mold of the typical southern belle due to her self-reliance. The second season could benefit from having more female characters, and Nico, along with a few other suitable characters from the franchise, would make great additions.

4. Trish

Dante’s Original Lady Got Stood Up

Longtime enthusiasts of Devil May Cry may have been taken aback that Trish, a significant character from the original game who was once Dante’s love interest and had multiple recurring appearances including Devil May Cry 5, wasn’t present in the first season of the Netflix adaptation. Unlike the damsel in distress trope, Trish wasn’t passive; she led Dante into what appeared to be a fatal situation but later joined forces with him, much like Lady who befriended Dante at the end of season one of the anime.

In the iconic scene of Devil May Cry, Dante is seen mourning over Trish’s body and lamenting that he should have filled her with light instead. This moment has since become a well-known meme for its comedic value. Given this popular response to Trish’s character, it’s plausible that she could be incorporated into season two of the anime, perhaps as part of the demon rebellion seeking to liberate Dante from his captivity. If Trish fails to make an appearance in the next season, fans might very well stage a protest!

3. Lucia

For Real This Time

As a die-hard anime fan and avid player of Devil May Cry games, I can’t help but feel that Lucia was underutilized in season one. Granted, she made an appearance, but it was so brief that she might as well have been a footnote. However, I firmly believe that next season could be her time to shine.

Lucia hails from the less-loved Devil May Cry 2, a game that didn’t resonate with fans back then, but has grown on many since. Despite its initial reception, it wasn’t a terrible game. In fact, I found Lucia to be an engaging character to control due to her more ninja-like persona compared to Dante.

Regrettably, she hasn’t been seen in a video game since then, which is quite unfortunate given her potential. Even though Devil May Cry 2 might not have met the expectations of fans initially, I think it would be a shame to erase Lucia from the series entirely. She even had a role in a prequel novel for Devil May Cry 5, so there’s definitely room for her story to unfold further.

I eagerly await the day when Lucia gets the recognition she deserves and becomes a fully-fledged character in the anime or perhaps even a future game!

In the Netflix series, Lucia makes an appearance towards the end of episode one, specifically when Darkcom was gathering demon hunters searching for Dante. She has a brief but impactful scene where she spits at a soldier, followed by hints about her subsequent events, leaving viewers hoping that she will be more than just an Easter egg for dedicated fans and will indeed develop as a character in season two.

2. Leon S. Kennedy

I Left Raccoon City For This?

It might appear unusual, but there’s a logical connection behind suggesting Leon S. Kennedy from the Resident Evil series, produced by Capcom. Dante’s associate, Enzo, mentions offering Dante a job in Raccoon City, a place where Leon originates. In contrast to New York City, Raccoon City is believed to be located somewhere in the Midwest, quite distant.

It’s unclear how season two might transport Leon to New York City to aid Dante, but it could make for an exciting collaboration. In fact, Adi Shankar’s anime adaptations on Netflix have previously blended characters, such as a Metal Gear appearing in the Castlevania anime via a multiverse gateway. Given the context, Leon seems more suited to the Devil May Cry universe compared to a Metal Gear fitting into the ancient era of Castlevania.

1. Dante (DmC: Devil May Cry Version)

Creating The Multiverse

In the second season, things might become even more thrilling as they develop not just an interconnected Capcom universe but a multiverse of characters from the Devil May Cry series. All five main games in the franchise are connected, although some fans prefer to overlook Devil May Cry 2. The exception is DmC: Devil May Cry, which was a reboot handled by a different developer, Ninja Theory.

The portrayal of Dante was grittier and punk-like rather than rock ‘n’ roll, yet he had a knack for delivering corny one-liners. A concept intriguing enough to imagine a group of Dante doppelgangers on a mission to safeguard the multiverse. This idea may be better suited for later episodes, and it bears resemblance to recent Spider-Man animated series, but it’s worth holding onto as a potential plotline in the future.
