Although numerous open-world games and first-person shooter titles are constantly being launched every few weeks, horror games tend to be less frequent. Given the scarcity of such games in the market, it’s understandable that when an intriguing new horror game is forthcoming, excitement can build up significantly among players who eagerly look forward to immersing themselves in the chilling experience it promises.
It’s fascinating when a game manages to surpass all expectations, especially considering some doubts about whether it could meet certain standards. It’s quite rare, but it happens occasionally and leaves us in awe. The anticipation for these games is usually high, given the trailers and developer comments before release. So, it’s almost incredible that they end up being so well-received, with many now considered timeless classics in their respective genres.
7. The Quarry
Supermassive Put Out Yet Another Enthralling Story-Driven Horror Game That Gives Players Plenty Of Creative Freedom
Initially, it was the chilling game “Until Dawn” that catapulted Supermassive Games into prominence for many gamers. Since then, they’ve delivered numerous top-tier games, but it seemed for a while that none could match the terror and excitement of their debut horror title. However, although previous anthology games were often viewed as secondary projects, “The Quarry” was another grand and eagerly anticipated production from Supermassive. This anticipation was fueled by the promise of numerous choices and varied endings that players would encounter.
Everybody eagerly awaited the screening of “The Quarry“, curious if it would truly live up to Supermassive’s claims of a monumental and thrilling horror journey. Fortunately, it surpassed expectations! Featuring a substantial ensemble of key characters, numerous enigmatic killers, and decisions that dramatically alter the narrative’s trajectory, most Supermassive enthusiasts were pleased with the developers’ creation, widely regarded as their finest work since “Until Dawn“.
6. Outlast 2
Somehow, The Sequel To Outlast Ended Up Being Even Creepier Than The Original
Outlast effectively builds suspense and maintains a frightening atmosphere by making players rely on their camera to navigate through the dark, while also featuring Miles as an unarmed protagonist. In simpler terms, playing this game is a chilling experience, which is why fans eagerly anticipated the sequel, despite high expectations already being set.
The follow-up delves deep into its plot and narrative, incorporating numerous chilling adversaries and motifs that significantly enhance the game’s impact, particularly the High School segments which are a terrifying ordeal to navigate through. Despite initial reservations, Outlast 2 proved to be a formidable contender, with some players even arguing it surpasses the renowned original version.
5. Little Nightmares 2
The Sequel To Little Nightmares Retained The Horror While Improving On The Core Gameplay
The game Little Nightmares garnered significant recognition within the horror genre due to its distinctive 2D gameplay and eerie enemy designs that continue to haunt even after the end credits. Consequently, it was a delight for fans when the second installment, surrounded by anticipation and conjecture prior to its release, proved to be an outstanding sequel, brimming with terrifying bosses and shocking surprises.
In the sequel, Six, our hero from the initial game, reappears, accompanied by Mono this time. This setup makes the levels and puzzles more interactive as there are now two characters on screen simultaneously, and more puzzles are introduced. The adversaries in the original were already intimidating, but the “humans” in Little Nightmares 2 are even more terrifying, particularly the tall-necked teacher who can effortlessly locate Six and Mono, no matter where they attempt to hide.
4. Dead Space Remake
A Frightening, Fun, And All-So-Immersive Reimagining Of The Iconic Survival Horror Gem
It appeared that the dynamic and engaging third installment of the Dead Space series might have marked the end of this popular franchise, as it had remained inactive for quite some time. However, when supporters demanded a return of the series, there was an announcement about a remake being developed, causing excitement among fans that could barely be contained.
In the Dead Space Remake, developers Motive opted to eliminate all loading screens, transforming the USG Ishimura into a vast, continuous play area. This, coupled with stunning visuals, significantly enhances the game’s realism and immersion. The Necromorph enemies still elicit the same terror they did in 2008, but the introduction of new weapon abilities adds a refreshing twist to the gameplay without making Isaac appear too powerful.
3. Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 7 Succeeded In Revitalizing The Series And Bringing Back Many Longtime Fans
For numerous enthusiasts of the franchise, Resident Evil 6 felt like the final blow to its demise. The game suggested that Capcom was eager to venture deeper into the action genre, much to the disappointment of many who cherished the deliberate and tactical approach of the originals. Yet, a more traditional style of play was hinted at in Capcom’s peculiar Kitchen demo. When it was disclosed this was merely a teaser for Resident Evil 7, it offered a flicker of optimism that the series might be revisiting its original essence.
It’s great news that Resident Evil 7 surpassed expectations, earning praise for its ability to rejuvenate the series. Its emphasis on building a chilling ambiance and keeping players constantly uneasy was commendable. The game’s narrative departure offered a fresh, distinctive experience, even before the Kitchen demo ignited anticipation. Capcom ensured that the fans received exactly what they were hoping for with this game.
2. Alan Wake 2
Remedy Went Above And Beyond With The Sequel To Alan’s Classic Adventure
The unique and captivating narrative of the original “Alan Wake” left a lasting impression on many, as it revolved around one of his books seemingly coming alive. Many thought that was all there was to Alan’s story, but over a decade later, at the 2021 Game Awards, a surprise trailer showcased an older and stern-looking Alan Wake reappearing.
Given the numerous outstanding games Remedy has produced since the debut of Alan Wake, players anticipated great things from Alan Wake 2. However, nobody could have foreseen the extraordinary lengths the developers would take to make this game truly exceptional. While Alan Wake 2 maintains the traditional gameplay of gathering supplies and fending off eerie adversaries, the incorporation of Mind Place and Writer’s Room introduces a more psychologically engaging aspect, transforming it into an exceptionally immersive, unique gaming experience.
