Since the inception of the original PlayStation, homegrown intellectual properties (IP) have been instrumental to the company’s overall business approach. Over time, these unique franchises have become increasingly significant, serving as a defining characteristic that sets PlayStation apart from its rivals. However, not all first-party PlayStation IP holds equal value.
As a devoted gaming enthusiast, it’s no secret that iconic titles like “God of War,” “Marvel’s Spider-Man,” “The Last of Us,” and “Horizon” have left an indelible mark on the gaming world. Yet, there are numerous PlayStation franchises from yesteryears that seem to have vanished into obscurity. However, this could soon change! In a recent episode of VGC’s “The Video Game Podcast,” Andy Robinson hinted at the existence of “at least a couple” of projects based on these deep-cut, old IPs that Sony is working on. It’s a tantalizing prospect that one of these long-forgotten PlayStation series might see the light of day again soon, and there are certainly many deserving titles due for a comeback.
A “deep cut” typically signifies something less familiar or frequently forgotten among the majority of fans. Therefore, series such as Killzone, Sly Cooper, and Resistance may not fit this category since they are still somewhat recognized and remembered by many.
‘Deep Cut’ Franchises That PlayStation Should Bring Back
Ape Escape
Making its debut in 1999, the Ape Escape series was the first to utilize the analog sticks of the DualShock. Over the years, it had only three primary installments, with the last one being released in 2005. Although there were several party games, kart racers, and an RPG spinoff associated with the series, it is primarily recognized for its mainline entries and the twin-stick gameplay centered around capturing apes within them.
Even though it’s been 15 years since we last saw an “Ape Escape” game, the series has recently gained popularity again by featuring in the highly acclaimed “Astro Bot” last year, which included a level dedicated to its unique gameplay. Now that people are showing renewed interest, there couldn’t be a better moment for the return of “Ape Escape”.
MotorStorm
In contrast to the widespread praise garnered by Nintendo’s Mario Kart franchise, Sony’s MotorStorm stood as a formidable rival in the world of racing games during the 2000s and the early part of the 2010s. Launched in 2006, the MotorStorm series produced five installments before it went on hiatus with the release of MotorStorm: RC for PS Vita and PS3 in 2012. With the exception of Gran Turismo, Sony lacks a racing series currently, and an action-packed series like MotorStorm could prove successful.
SOCOM
The tactical shooter game series, known as SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs , existed for almost a decade, producing an impressive amount of content. Over the span from 2002 to 2011, a total of 10 SOCOM games were launched across various platforms such as PS2, PSP, and PS3. Despite the series receiving less favorable reviews as time passed, some devoted fans still yearn for its revival. Given the ongoing success of Rainbow Six Siege, it could be beneficial to revisit the idea of bringing SOCOM back to life.
Buzz!
Notably popular and even more so than SOCOM, Buzz! was an engaging multiplayer trivia game that swept across the globe in the 2000s. Over the course of five years from 2005 to 2010, a grand total of 14 mainline Buzz! games were launched, accompanied by another five Buzz! Junior games designed for younger audiences. In today’s live-service era, a free-to-play, continuously updated version of Buzz! could prove surprisingly successful.
Syphon Filter
Initially hailed as one of the top games on the original PlayStation, Syphon Filter left a significant mark on the stealth shooter genre upon its release in 1999. Subsequent installments quickly emerged, including two for the PSP. Although most Syphon Filter games received positive reviews, the series unexpectedly concluded in 2007 when developer Bend Studio shifted their focus to creating Uncharted: The Golden Abyss and later Days Gone. Today, the stealth genre still seems to lack substantial AAA franchises, making a comeback of Syphon Filter an enticing possibility to fill that void.
