As someone who grew up with a Game Boy Color and a love for all things Pokémon, I can wholeheartedly agree that these games bring a unique sense of comfort and nostalgia. Each game on this list offers something different, but they all share the common thread of allowing us to step back into our childhoods and reconnect with a beloved franchise.
Nintendo’s Pokemon franchise is among the most extensive franchises globally, with its popularity extending beyond gaming enthusiasts. Even individuals who haven’t played video games may recognize Pikachu, testifying to the series’ success. The franchise boasts numerous primary installments and a myriad of spin-offs, ensuring its place in history.
Choosing the coziest games from this extensive collection can be challenging, as many gamers have their personal preferences. However, for those seeking the cream of the crop, here’s a list of the top 7 most soothing titles within the franchise.
7 Pokemon Puzzle League (2000)
The Candy Crush of Pokemon
2000 saw the arrival of Pokémon Puzzle League for the N64 console, where I, as Ash and his trusty companion Pikachu, embarked on a journey to claim the title of Puzzle League Champion. In this tournament, we had to demonstrate our puzzle-solving prowess by arranging blocks of identical colors in a row before fresh blocks could be added from below. Failure to do so would result in a loss as the blocks reached the top.
As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in both casual and competitive gaming, I find that certain games offer a unique appeal due to their lack of overly complex strategic planning requirements. This particular game is one of those rare gems that allow me to relax and enjoy without feeling overwhelmed by the need to constantly strategize or anticipate future moves. While it does require some level of strategy, it doesn’t demand the same level of mental exertion as a challenging opponent or a coveted Pokemon in the mainline series games. In simpler terms, this game offers me the opportunity to unwind and have fun without feeling pressured to think too much about my next move.
6 Pokemon Stadium 2 (2001)
So Many Mini-Games To Play
In contrast to Pokemon Stadium 2 not having a traditional narrative, it’s packed with various activities for players to engage in. The game offers a stadium-style competition where participants strive to win trophies and conquer diverse tournaments. Additionally, there’s a Mini-Game Park hosting 12 mini-games, a Free Battle Mode to hone Pokemon battling skills, and the ability to connect with both the first and second generation games.
As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in various video games throughout my life, I find this particular game exceptionally comforting due to its abundance of options. Whether I’m seeking a thrilling challenge or a peaceful escape, this game delivers on both fronts. For instance, when I’m feeling bold and up for a fight, I can engage in the exciting tournaments at the stadium. However, if I need a break from the action, I can unwind by playing some tranquil mini-games or customizing my player’s room on a Game Boy game – a relaxing activity that never fails to soothe my soul. Overall, this game’s versatility and ability to cater to different moods makes it an invaluable addition to my gaming library.
5 Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX (2020)
Rescue Pokemon In Your Freetime
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
In 2020, I got my hands on a fantastic remake of the classic Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team, originally released in 2005 for the Game Boy. This time around, I found myself stepping into the shoes of a human who’s been transformed into a Pokemon! Now, I’m navigating this new life, learning to adapt to my unusual transformation.
As a gamer, I find this game soothing because it breathes new life into a beloved classic by offering expanded choices. In this adventure, I get to decide which Pokemon I transform into and choose my companion Pokemon too. The game’s design is incredibly player-friendly, enabling me to swap into another Pokemon if mine perishes in a dungeon. What makes this game special is that it’s not just about battling Pokemon, but rescuing them instead, providing a refreshing change of pace from the usual fights.
4 Pokemon Snap (1999)
Relaxing Photo Game
Pokemon Snap
Originally launched in 1999 on Nintendo 64, this game has now also been made available for the Nintendo Switch in 2021, providing another delightful gaming experience. The narrative revolves around a photographer who is assigned the task of capturing images of Pokemon for Professor Oak. These unique creatures inhabit an island untouched by humans, offering players a glimpse into how they coexist and collaborate.
Among the games on the list, this one is particularly tranquil as it invites players to leisurely explore an enchanting island setting at their own pace. As they meander through the game, they have the opportunity to capture images of any Pokemon that appear before them. This aspect encourages players to savor the experience and immerse themselves fully in the moment, a luxury not always found in many games.
3 Pokemon Legends: Arceus (2022)
A New Take On A Classic Game Series
Arceus” is a prequel to the games “Pokemon Diamond” and “Pearl,” which were from the fourth generation. Unlike previous games where battles with Pokemon were central, this game shifts focus to collecting data about various Pokemon in the Hisui region, an area that would later become the Sinnoh Region. Instead of battling, you’ll be tasked with completing the Pokedex by any means possible.
As someone who grew up with Pokémon, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I hear about the latest game that takes us back to the early days of this beloved franchise. It’s like stepping into a time machine and reliving my childhood memories all over again, but this time with a fresh perspective. This game offers players a unique opportunity to learn about the origins of Pokémon and human interaction in a way we never had before, truly immersing us in the rich world that Pokémon has created.
2 Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu (2018)
A Classic Remake With A Great Partner
In simpler terms, “Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu” and “Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee” are revamped versions of the initial Pokemon games, “Pokemon Red and Blue,” belonging to generation 1. Unlike the originals, these remakes come with a companion Pokemon – either Pikachu or Eevee, depending on your choice of game. These new versions also include additional content like regional variations of Pokemon and their Mega Evolutions. The plot remains similar to the original games, tracing the journey of your character throughout Kanto.
These remakes offer a nostalgic feel as they combine the cherished fundamentals of the original game with updated features. Players are free to explore Kanto, catch Pokemon, strive against the Elite Four, or simply bond with their companion Pokemon. The game also includes the Poke Ball Plus, a controller shaped like a Poke Ball, further enhancing the cozy gaming experience.
1 Your Childhood Mainline Pokemon Game
Nothing Hits Quite Like The First
Without a doubt, the most nostalgic Pokémon game for any series devotee is undeniably the one that ignited it all – the very first Pokémon game they played during their childhood. This game sparked their passion for Pokémon and cemented them as loyal fans of the franchise; each fan has a unique favorite game that transports them back to their youth.
Growing up, I found solace and nostalgia in simple childhood games that transported me back to a time when life seemed less complicated. Even now, decades later, these games remain vividly etched in my memory as they remind me of my youthful innocence and joy. The comfort comes from recognizing that the child playing those games has grown into an adult who continues to cherish them, reflecting the enduring power of these timeless activities.
