Each year, around 200 new anime series are released, covering all sorts of genres and aimed at different audiences. While each season brings a lot of exciting new shows, only a few become truly popular and remain successful long-term. Most series, unfortunately, don’t have a lasting impact and are quickly forgotten, often even shortly after they finish airing.
Over time, some amazing anime series unfortunately fade from public memory. These aren’t poorly made shows—they simply didn’t reach the same widespread popularity as other anime from the same era. Here are a few fantastic, yet often forgotten, anime that deserve a watch.
Mushi-Shi
Iyashikei anime prioritize creating a relaxing atmosphere and focusing on comforting details, offering viewers a stress-free experience. Mushi-Shi excels at this, but unfortunately, it’s become less well-known over time, even though it was initially praised by critics and fans.
As a huge anime fan, I can tell you that Mushi-Shi is truly something special. It’s not about explosions or constant fighting; it’s a really peaceful and almost dreamlike show, unlike anything else I’ve ever seen. It’s so different from the usual fast-paced anime – Mushi-Shi takes its time, letting you soak in the beautiful artwork, the incredible settings, and really connect with the characters. It’s a totally unique experience.
Princess Tutu
Anime inspired by ballet is pretty rare, but Princess Tutu is a unique series created by Ikuko Itoh, who also worked on Sailor Moon. It blends magical girl themes with classic fairy tale storytelling.
Despite its charming look, this series can be surprisingly intense. Think of it as a fairy tale where the action happens through gorgeous, elaborate dances instead of fights. While it’s an older anime, the animation still holds up well, even if it’s not as complex as modern shows. What really sets it apart is its clever, self-aware storytelling, making it a great pick for fans of magical girl anime and anyone wanting to see something unique.
Azumanga Daioh
Twenty years ago, Azumanga Daioh was well-known among anime fans. However, it’s become less popular over time. The show centers around a group of high school girls and their funny, everyday experiences, with each girl having a unique personality.

Azumanga Daioh might seem like a typical everyday story, but it actually set the stage for many of the slice-of-life anime that came after it. Before shows like K-On! made the genre popular, Azumanga Daioh was one of the first to focus on lighthearted, charming characters – a formula that became hugely popular in the 2000s. Even now, it’s a fantastic series, and its humor still works well despite being made a while ago.
His and Her Circumstances
While Hideaki Anno and the studio Gainax are best known for Neon Genesis Evangelion, they created other notable works as well. Following Evangelion, Anno directed His and Her Circumstances, which surprised many viewers with its unexpected direction.
His and Her Circumstances stands out with its unique and experimental visuals, creating a truly original atmosphere. Unlike many other romance anime, it avoids predictable storylines and clichés. The main characters, Yukino and Soichiro, are well-developed and offer a refreshing take on typical shojo romance couples. While the anime’s ending suffers from some production problems, it’s still a very enjoyable watch if you can overlook them, making it one of the better romance anime available.
Kids on the Slope
Shinichiro Watanabe is famous for directing popular anime like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. However, he’s created many other great shows, including Kids on the Slope from 2012. This charming and realistic series remains a standout even today.
This anime is a heartwarming story about growing up, set in 1960s Japan. It follows Kaoru, a shy high school student, who begins to open up after meeting Sentarou, a rebellious classmate. Sentarou’s passion for jazz inspires Kaoru to learn the instrument, and the two develop a close friendship, strengthened by their classmate Ritsuko. Though brief, the series is beautifully done, featuring a stunning soundtrack and genuinely moving moments. The characters are well-developed, and a touch of romance adds to the experience.
Serial Experiments Lain
The 1990s produced a lot of fantastic anime, but some great shows have faded from memory. While it isn’t as widely known as series like Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain remains one of the most thought-provoking and important anime of the decade, and it deserves more recognition.
I recently watched an anime that really stuck with me. It delves into questions of who we are and how we connect with others, especially as technology becomes more and more central to our lives – and it’s surprisingly relevant considering how old the series is. It’s not a fast-paced show; it’s more experimental and has some unexpected horror elements that might not appeal to all viewers. However, the show’s unique mood, deliberate pace, and frankly unsettling portrayal of technology’s impact on our relationships – both with others and ourselves – make it something I’d highly recommend.
Durarara!!
The 2010s saw many fantastic anime series, and while it didn’t achieve mainstream popularity, Durarara!! stands out as a truly exceptional and beloved cult classic from that era.
This story unfolds in Ikebukuro, following a diverse group of characters whose lives become connected. Key figures include Celty, a mysterious courier who is also a Dullahan, newcomer Mikado, and the constantly clashing Shizuo and Izaya. The narrative shifts between different viewpoints, introducing you to many characters and leaving you to piece together how everything will connect.
