7 Strongest Avatars, Ranked By Strength

Avatar is a hugely popular series that has been a part of many people’s childhoods, and still is today. The Avatar, a central character in the story, is incredibly powerful – they’re the only person who can master all four elements: water, earth, fire, and air.

As a lifelong follower of the Avatar, I’ve always been fascinated by the incredible individuals who’ve shaped our world! It’s amazing to think about all the Avatars who’ve come before, each mastering a different element and being reborn after their time. But what’s really interesting is that they aren’t all the same! Some Avatars have achieved so much more than others, leaving a bigger mark on history.

Avatar Roku

  • Original Element: Fire

Among all the Avatars, Roku is arguably the least impressive. As the Avatar immediately preceding Aang, he dedicated much of his life to mastering all four elements and later proved to be a valuable helper to Aang on his journey.

His main weakness wasn’t failing to prevent the century-long war. Because he was close friends with Fire Lord Sozin, his judgment was clouded, and he couldn’t stop the war that Sozin started. He lived a long life, but not much is remembered about what he actually accomplished.

Avatar Kuruk

  • Original Element: Water

Kuruk faced a difficult life as the Avatar. Because his predecessor, Yangchen, hadn’t paid enough attention to the spirit world, Kuruk spent his life battling dangerous spirits and working to restore harmony.

Kuruk suffered greatly throughout his life because of the spirits, including the tragic loss of his fiancée to Koh the Face Stealer. He died young, at only 33 years old, and his soul was left deeply scarred.

Avatar Wan

  • Original Element: Fire

Avatar Wan lived a very long time ago, 10,000 years before the story of Legend of Korra. He was the very first Avatar, and he began the cycle of Avatars we know today. With the help of a spirit named Raava, he traveled to ancient Lion Turtles and learned to master all four elements.

To save the world from a millennium of darkness, he battled Vaatu. With Raava’s assistance, he successfully imprisoned Vaatu for 10,000 years and also created a division between the human and spirit worlds.

Avatar Yang Chen

  • Original Element: Air

Avatar Yang Chen brought a period of unprecedented peace to the world, and people continue to revere her centuries after her lifetime. She was a formidable fighter, capable of battling General Old Iron and possessing incredibly powerful airbending skills.

While Yang Chen excelled with humans, she completely struggled when dealing with spirits.

Avatar Kyoshi

  • Original Element: Earth

Kyoshi is a fan-favorite Avatar, known for her humble beginnings – she started as a servant before discovering her destiny. Throughout her life, she overcame many strong opponents, notably Chin the Conqueror, and a particularly intriguing foe named Yun, who falsely claimed to be the Avatar.

Her ability to split the earth and form her own island, Kyoshi Island, is arguably her most remarkable feat.

Avatar Aang

  • Original Element: Air

Aang is arguably the most famous Avatar in the series. He was trapped in ice for a century right before the beginning of a long war. This meant the Air Nomads were completely destroyed, leaving him as the last Airbender. After Katara freed him, he began training to master the other three elements so he could defeat Fire Lord Ozai.

Honestly, Aang’s bending is just incredible, especially when he goes into the Avatar State! We didn’t get to see much of him grown up, but even as a twelve-year-old, he was unbelievably powerful. I mean, he defeated Fire Lord Ozai during Sozin’s Comet – that’s how you know someone is a true master!

Avatar Korra

  • Original Element: Water

I’ve been watching Korra, and it’s amazing to see how she carries on Aang’s legacy as the current Avatar. It’s a really different time for her, though – technology is booming, and people are starting to question what the Avatar’s role is in this new world. Honestly, the threats she faces are way bigger and more complex than anything the Avatars before her had to deal with.

Aside from Wan, she’s the only other Avatar confirmed to have spoken directly with Raava. This ability helped her overcome powerful foes, including the dark Avatar, as well as opponents like Amon, a master of bloodbending, and Kuvira, the leader of the Earth Empire.

Korra is now the first Avatar in a brand new 10,000-year cycle, as she’s lost her link to previous Avatars. She also made a world-changing decision by choosing to reconnect the human and spirit worlds – effectively undoing what Avatar Wan originally did.
