Through flashbacks, we learn he gained strength by absorbing countless demons, all to win the affection of a woman named Kikyo. This ultimately turned him into the most dangerous monster in feudal Japan.
Naraku is a complex being able to easily switch between different bodies and forms, adapting his physical appearance during fights. He doesn’t just change his own shape, though; Naraku also creates minions by separating parts of his own flesh. These include characters like Kanna, Kagura, and Goshinki.

Watching My Hero Academia, I noticed a lot of the characters seem inspired by the X-Men, so it felt inevitable that someone like Mystique would appear. That character is Himiko Toga. She’s a tricky villain with a power that lets her transform into other people, and while she seems to use it just to get close to those she admires, there’s a deeper motivation at play. Ultimately, she wants to tear down a world that didn’t accept her, and her transformation ability is how she plans to do it.
Himiko’s clever disguises weren’t enough in the end. After her powers evolved, she pushed Twice’s ability to its breaking point with a dangerous technique, potentially destroying the hero world. Luckily, Ochaco Uraraka connected with Himiko’s pain and helped her change her ways, finally stopping her destructive shapeshifting.

I noticed a lot of characters in Bleach could change their forms. It started with Yoruichi, who could switch between a cat and her human self. Aaroniero was similar – he used his ability, Metastacia, to look like Kaien Shiba during his fight with Rukia. But the real shapeshifters didn’t show up until the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, when we met the twin brothers, Loyd and Royd Lloyd.

Both Royd and Loyd used the power called ‘The Yourself’. Loyd tried to fight like Kenpachi Zaraki, but wasn’t very effective. Royd was better at using the ability, even managing to transform into King Yhwach to distract Captain Yamamoto. Although the fake Yhwach couldn’t defeat Yamamoto, he held out until Yamamoto unleashed the full power of his bankai. This was exactly what the real Yhwach needed – for Royd to wear Yamamoto down in battle.

Fans of anime might compare Rimuru Tempest to Naraku from Inuyasha, but Rimuru is a more heroic character. As the main character in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Rimuru is dedicated to using his powers for good, unlike Naraku, who was driven by personal desires. Rimuru, a slime, intentionally absorbed many powerful monsters to gain their abilities, characteristics, and instincts.
Rimuru quickly became incredibly powerful as a shapeshifting slime, and surprisingly, he didn’t rely on disguises to defeat his opponents. Instead, he often used his ability to change form to better connect with others – for example, he’d take on the appearance of Shizue Izawa to create a more neutral, human-like form. It’s funny to remember that early in the Tensura anime, he even transformed into a wolf just to roar and intimidate people!

The artificial humans created through dark alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood each have distinct abilities and fighting styles. For example, Greed uses an incredibly strong shield, Pride prefers to watch and plan from the shadows, and Envy can change his appearance. Envy, like many shapeshifters, uses this ability for deception and to harm his opponents, often by pretending to be someone they trust – like military officials or even loved ones. He used this cruel tactic to defeat Maes Hughes, impersonating both Hughes’ wife, Gracia, and their daughter, Maria, before ultimately killing him.
Envy is a dangerous fighter who uses his shapeshifting abilities in combat, sometimes transforming into monstrous creatures like a six-legged lizard to attack. He can mimic animals or turn his body parts into weapons like blades or snakes. Perhaps most disturbingly, he openly mocks humanity while revealing he once disguised himself as an Amestris officer to murder an Ishvalan child, an act that sparked a devastating civil war.
Mr. 2 Bon Clay Tricked Sanji and Hannibal With His Clone-Clone Fruit
Mr. 2 Also Believed in the Power of Friendship
Users of Zoan Devil Fruits have the ability to transform into different forms, ranging from partial human-animal hybrids to complete animal transformations – examples include Rob Lucci, the powerful Emperor Kaido, and even Prince Loki. For fans seeking a classic shapeshifter, Mr. 2 Bon Clay fits the bill. He’s a skilled martial artist and uses his Clone-Clone Fruit to create dangerous copies of himself, earning him a high position within Baroque Works.
Mr. 2’s Devil Fruit allows him to perfectly copy other people’s appearances, including their faces and bodies. While he initially used this ability for playful deception, like confusing Sanji during their battle, he later found more impactful ways to use it. Fans of One Piece were thrilled when he used his powers to aid the Straw Hat Pirates in escaping Alabasta, and again when he helped Luffy break out of Impel Down.
Menthuthuyoupi Was the Main Shapeshifter of Meruem’s Ant Army
Menthuthuyoupi Boasted Huge Combat Power Alongside Shapeshifting
Later episodes of Hunter x Hunter, particularly the Chimera Ant Arc, showcased incredible increases in power levels. While villains like Neferpitou and Meruem are often highlighted, Menthuthuyoupi is a force to be reckoned with as well. He’s one of the strongest Chimera Ants physically, and his ability to shapeshift makes him a truly dangerous opponent when he utilizes it effectively.
Like many powerful characters in Hunter x Hunter, Menthuthuyoupi is a Nen user, specializing in Transmutation. This allows the Chimera Ant to change his body, adding animal parts to become more adaptable in combat. He can create wings, extra arms, and other features, and when pushed to the limit, he can enter a state called Rage Incarnate, transforming into an incredibly powerful centaur-like form.
