Vegeta is consistently one of the most powerful characters in the entire Dragon Ball series. Early on, during the Saiyan Saga, he was so strong that Goku required assistance from Gohan, Krillin, and Yajirobe just to stay alive – and even with their help, no one could defeat him. In the Frieza Saga, Vegeta repeatedly pushed his limits, growing stronger with each battle until he nearly matched Goku’s power. As of Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta has surpassed Goku, becoming the second strongest character in the series, only behind Gohan.
While Goku has more transformations, Vegeta doesn’t need as many. He expertly masters each of his forms – like Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan Blue, and Ultra Ego – pushing them further than anyone else. Because Vegeta starts with a naturally higher power level, his transformations quickly allow him to either match or even exceed Goku’s strength.
7. Super Saiyan Vegeta Was Briefly Stronger Than Super Saiyan Goku in the Cell Saga
When Vegeta first transforms into a Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z, he’s initially more powerful than Goku. He dedicated himself to intense training during the three years between the battles against Frieza and Cell, resulting in a Super Saiyan form that surpassed Goku’s at the time. While Goku struggled against Android 19 before falling ill, Vegeta easily defeated him and even had the opportunity to kill Dr. Gero.
Android 18 swiftly defeats Vegeta, but he trains with Future Trunks in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for a year to improve his Super Saiyan transformation. He develops a more powerful version called Super Saiyan Grade 2, which significantly increases his strength but uses slightly more stamina. Calling himself “Super Vegeta,” he becomes strong enough to easily defeat Semi-Perfect Cell. However, his pride causes him to allow Cell to absorb Android 18, ultimately leading to Cell becoming Perfect.
6. Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta Was Able to Make Beerus Bleed

Vegeta only achieved the Super Saiyan 2 transformation after Babidi took control of him, turning him into Majin Vegeta. This allowed him to reach a similar power level to Super Saiyan 2 Goku, and briefly surpass Super Saiyan 2 Gohan. Throughout the fight with Buu, Vegeta’s power didn’t increase, but he remained strong enough to participate in the final battle against Kid Buu.
Goku is gathering energy for a powerful attack, and Vegeta bravely steps up to distract the dangerous Kid Buu, even though he knows he can’t win. As a Super Saiyan 2, Vegeta is clearly weaker than Kid Buu, but he fights with incredible determination, enduring a relentless barrage of attacks to keep Buu away from Goku. Simply surviving that onslaught is an amazing feat. Interestingly, in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Vegeta’s intense anger as a Super Saiyan 2 makes him so powerful that even Master Roshi admits he’s become stronger than Super Saiyan 3 Goku.
5. Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta is Stronger Than Super Saiyan 3 Goku
In Dragon Ball Z, Super Saiyan 3 was Goku’s most powerful transformation, but also his least practical. He initially achieved this form while dead, so he didn’t feel its drawbacks. However, during his fight with Kid Buu, Goku’s body couldn’t handle the immense energy drain of Super Saiyan 3. He used up energy faster than he could replenish it, forcing him to revert to his normal state for the remainder of the battle.
In Dragon Ball DAIMA, Vegeta surprises everyone by revealing he’s mastered Super Saiyan 3 through secret training. This is a huge feat, considering Goku needed to be temporarily deceased to reach this level, and Gotenks could only access it through fusion. What’s even more remarkable is that Vegeta doesn’t seem to suffer the massive energy drain that typically comes with Super Saiyan 3. Both his child and adult forms can maintain the transformation for longer periods than Goku, despite having far less time to learn it.
4. Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta Brought The Prince of All Saiyans Up to Goku’s Level With Zero Training
Watching Dragon Ball GT, I always felt Vegeta was a step behind Goku, except when he was controlled by Baby. It wasn’t until the very end, during the Shadow Dragon Saga, that he finally caught up. He needed Bulma’s help – she used Blutz Waves to unlock his Super Saiyan 4 form. Normally, Vegeta would never accept a power-up that wasn’t earned through his own training, so the fact that he let Bulma assist him really showed how much he’d grown as a character.
The Vegeta we see in Dragon Ball GT is arguably his most down-to-earth. He’s truly a hero, having moved past his arrogance and readily sacrificing his pride to support Goku and protect the world. In fact, Vegeta is the one who suggests fusing into Gogeta during the climactic fight against Omega Shenron. What’s remarkable is that, even without much training, Vegeta’s natural power, boosted by the Blutz Waves, reaches a level comparable to Super Saiyan 4 Goku.
3. Super Saiyan God Vegeta Unlocked the Form All on His Own – Unlike Goku
Unlike all of Goku’s other transformations, he didn’t achieve Super Saiyan God through training or a powerful emotional moment. In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Goku admits he had to use a special ritual to become a Super Saiyan God, which he found frustrating. This makes it even more remarkable that Vegeta was able to unlock the form on his own. While it’s never explained how Vegeta first became a Super Saiyan God, it’s established that he didn’t rely on the same ritual Goku did.
In the manga, Vegeta fights Goku Black using Super Saiyan God strategically, carefully managing his godly energy, much like Goku conserved energy with Kaioken against Frieza. In the anime Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Vegeta first transforms into Super Saiyan God and nearly defeats Broly before Goku steps in to fight him.
2. Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta is Objectively Better Than Super Saiyan Blue Goku
Ultimately, Vegeta is the most powerful Super Saiyan Blue in Dragon Ball Super. By the time the Goku Black Saga ends, Vegeta’s training has made his Super Saiyan Blue as strong as Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue combined with Kaioken – a huge accomplishment, given that Kaioken multiplies Goku’s power. Later, in the Tournament of Power, Vegeta evolves his Super Saiyan Blue into Super Saiyan Blue Evolution, a remarkably powerful form comparable to Ultra Instinct Sign, a technique normally used by angels.
Chapter 103 of Dragon Ball Super shows Vegeta in his Super Saiyan Blue form being incredibly powerful, even able to effectively fight Gohan in his Beast form. This is significant because Gohan Beast previously defeated Goku while Goku was using Ultra Instinct. Despite this, Vegeta managed to hold his own using only Super Saiyan Blue. Currently, in terms of strength and what he’s accomplished, Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta surpasses Super Saiyan Blue Goku.
1. Ultra Ego Vegeta Can Beat Ultra Instinct Goku – For Now
The movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero finally shows Vegeta fulfilling a long-held ambition: defeating Goku in a legitimate, one-on-one battle. Previously, in the Saiyan Saga, Vegeta lost to a team effort from Gohan, Krillin, and Yajirobe, preventing him from finishing his duel with Goku—and he considered transforming into a Great Ape a defeat in itself. Later, during the Majin Buu Saga, Vegeta knocked out Super Saiyan 2 Goku with a surprise attack, but then felt humiliated learning Goku could have become a Super Saiyan 3 at any moment and easily won the fight.
In the recent Super Hero movie, Vegeta defeated Goku using only his natural abilities – no transformations were used. Since Vegeta is already more powerful in his base form, this suggests that his Ultra Ego form is currently stronger than Goku’s Ultra Instinct. While Goku will likely improve and eventually become more powerful, Ultra Ego Vegeta is presently the strongest. A key feature of Ultra Ego is that it grows stronger as the user fights and takes damage. Though Ultra Ego Vegeta hasn’t won any battles yet, it already has a power advantage. Currently, only Gohan Beast and Black Frieza are stronger transformations.
