That decade produced a huge number of series, films, and OVAs with distinctive stories and a classic look that often holds up even better than many newer shows. Some standouts include Cowboy Bebop, His and Her Circumstances, and Record of Lodoss War.
As a huge fan of ‘90s anime, I’ve discovered some real gems! There are a few series that are consistently amazing, season after season – seriously, not a single weak link! If you’re the type of viewer who loves to really sink into a show with longer episodes, these ’90s anime are absolutely perfect. You won’t be disappointed – they just keep getting better!
8. Sorcerous Stabber Orphen Is Slow But Hilarious
Most anime fans aren’t familiar with Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, a fantasy adventure series that didn’t get much attention when it first came out in the ‘90s. Surprisingly, it recently got a sequel! Unlike many anime from that era, it has a relatively simple plot, but it’s still a fun and engaging story set in a fantasy world reminiscent of Dungeons & Dragons.
The anime Sorcerous Stabber Orphen centers around a funny trio: Orphen, the main character, his girlfriend Cleao, and his apprentice Majic. They embark on a quest to find Orphen’s adopted sister, Azalie, who has been transformed into a dragon. Hot on their heels are a pair of comical dwarfs who relentlessly pursue them, much like Team Rocket constantly chases Ash and Pikachu.
7. You’re Under Arrest Doesn’t Recycle Episodes
Studio Deen’s You’re Under Arrest, released in the 1990s, is a surprisingly well-developed anime franchise. It includes original video animations (OVAs), a TV special, and a movie. Though it didn’t get much international attention at the time, fans who have seen it consistently praise its strong character development and the way its story, while episodic, avoids becoming predictable.
I recently watched You’re Under Arrest, and it follows two police officers, Natsumi and Miyuki, who work as partners in Tokyo’s Bokuto Precinct. Each episode shows them going about their jobs, trying to keep the peace and maintain order throughout the city.
6. Rurouni Kenshin Is the Standard of Samurai Anime
Many samurai anime fans love the story of Himura Kenshin, also known as the Battousai. Despite some controversies, the Rurouni Kenshin series is still considered the gold standard for believable sword fighting in anime. The story is set during Japan’s Meiji era and incorporates historical details, making the plot even more engaging.
Whether you’re familiar with the original anime or just know about the popular live-action movies, Rurouni Kenshin always tells a compelling story. It perfectly balances exciting action, emotional drama, and complex characters, captivating audiences both new and old.
5. Slam Dunk’s Slow Pacing Is Forgivable
Many fans consider Slam Dunk the best sports anime ever made, and its popularity is well-deserved. The series follows Hanamichi Sakuragi, a hilarious and unskilled basketball player, who constantly provides comedic moments both on and off the court. He’s easily one of the most lovable main characters in both sports and action-adventure anime.
Although Slam Dunk can feel slow at times, fans love it for its authentic depiction of basketball skills and its memorable characters – including Hanamichi Sakuragi, the Shohoku team, and their tough opponents.
4. Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play Is a Guilty-Pleasure Romance Anime
I think a lot of us who were obsessed with shojo anime growing up totally fantasized about being the Priestess of Suzaku in Fushigi Yuugi! Seriously, who didn’t want to be Miaka Yuuki, surrounded by gorgeous guys like Tamahome and Hotohori? It was basically the ultimate anime girl dream back then!
This beloved anime has two seasons, focusing on the Suzaku and Seiryu storylines. Even after all 52 episodes, there’s still more of the story for fans to enjoy! The series follows Miaka Yuuki as she’s transported into the Book of the Four Gods, where she’s the priestess of Suzaku and must protect the Konan Empire from those who threaten it.

Although One Piece is a very long anime series, it’s worth checking out! Beyond the sheer number of episodes, viewers will find a deeply developed world, exciting battles, and a lovable group of pirates following Luffy.

Sailor Moon remains a hugely popular anime from the ’90s, consistently recommended by fans to new audiences. Though it’s been updated with a remake, the original series’ unique look and feel still stand out, perfectly capturing the magic and style of that era’s magical girl shows.
I think most anime fans know Usagi Tsukino, better known as Sailor Moon. She’s famous for being a magical girl who fights to protect the world from evil. What always struck me about her wasn’t just how powerful she was, but also how much passion and kindness she had – she’s truly one of the most memorable characters in anime, for me.
