Anime has exploded in popularity over the last few decades, and as a result, some older series don’t quite measure up to today’s standards. Many beloved shows from the past have aged poorly, and deserve fresh, updated adaptations. Remaking these stories could address issues like outdated animation, slow pacing, or unfinished storylines, while also introducing them to a whole new audience.
Lots of popular shows are being remade, and there are several great anime series that could also benefit from a fresh start. In fact, some are already in the works – for example, a new version of One Piece is coming soon.
Naruto
- Original Release Date: 2002
- Main Character: Naruto Uzumaki
Naruto is a truly iconic manga and anime series. It tells the exciting story of Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja, and is well-known even by people who aren’t typically anime fans. The original Naruto anime ran from 2002 to 2014, and many believe it’s time for a remake, especially since the popular series One Piece is both continuing and also receiving a new version.
Even in 2026, the animation in the original Naruto anime remains impressive. However, the series contains a significant amount of filler content, and a new adaptation could really improve the overall experience. Given Naruto’s huge and dedicated fanbase, a remake would almost certainly be a hit.
Berserk
- Original Release Date: 1997
- Main Character: Guts
Berserk is a highly acclaimed manga series, considered one of the greatest of its kind. Despite its popularity, a truly satisfying anime adaptation has never been made, even with several attempts over the years. It’s disappointing that, even now, in 2026, Berserk lacks the impressive anime series its compelling story deserves.
Berserk hasn’t had a truly successful anime adaptation for a few reasons, largely due to the incredible detail in Kentaro Miura’s artwork. However, it definitely deserves a new attempt. While an anime could never perfectly replicate the manga, it’s still worth pursuing.
Dragon Ball
- Original Release Date: 1986
- Main Character: Goku
Dragon Ball is considered a hugely influential series – often called the foundation of modern action anime – because it inspired many popular shows like One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. Even today, in 2026, Dragon Ball continues to release new content, with the recent animation of Dragon Ball Daima and the upcoming release of Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol promising more to come.
Fans are enthusiastic about new Dragon Ball projects, but many also hope to see remakes of the original animated series. The earlier adventures of young Goku, in particular, could really benefit from a modern update, and would likely be very popular with fans given the franchise’s current success.
Yu Yu Hakusho
- Original Release Date: 1992
- Main Character: Yusuke Urameshi
Yoshihiro Togashi is a famous manga artist. While he’s currently well-known for Hunter x Hunter, his first big success was Yu Yu Hakusho. However, Yu Yu Hakusho feels a bit old to many fans now, as it hasn’t been updated with new chapters in a very long time.
Like many classic manga, Yu Yu Hakusho would benefit from a modern remake. This would not only bring the story back to life but also introduce it to a new generation of anime viewers. It could also satisfy fans of Hunter x Hunter who are eagerly waiting for that series to return to the screen.

One Piece
- Original Release Date: 1999
- Main Character: Monkey D. Luffy
One Piece is the best-selling manga series globally, and a new anime adaptation is currently in production alongside the existing, long-running series. While One Piece already has an anime, a remake is necessary because the animation quality of the earlier episodes hasn’t aged well.
Watching One Piece, I’ve noticed the anime really struggles with how quickly or slowly things move, and it often deviates from the original manga. Honestly, the animation quality isn’t always great either, especially in some of the longer story arcs. There’s a lot of hope among fans for the Wit Studio remake – they’re promising a new look at Eiichiro Oda’s fantastic story, but we’re still waiting to find out when it will actually come out.
Claymore
- Original Release Date: 2007
- Main Character: Clare
Claymore is often described as a more accessible version of the dark fantasy manga Berserk, and it’s become incredibly popular over the years. Although the Claymore manga is fantastic, the anime adaptation didn’t live up to its quality and, unfortunately, didn’t finish telling the complete story.
When the Claymore anime was originally released, the manga it was based on was still being written. The anime ended when it reached the same point as the manga, leaving a significant portion of the story unfinished. A remake could resolve this by completing the story with updated animation and giving fans a satisfying ending.
Tokyo Ghoul
- Original Release Date: 2011
- Main Character: Ken Kaneki
During the early 2010s, Tokyo Ghoul became a hugely popular anime. While the first season was fantastic, everything that came after significantly missed the mark, straying from the original manga’s storyline. Considering its potential, the series could really benefit from a fresh, updated remake.
If Tokyo Ghoul gets a new anime adaptation, it really needs to closely follow the original manga to avoid the mistakes of the first attempt. With the right execution, Kaneki’s dark and violent story has the potential to become as popular as Attack on Titan.
Inuyasha
- Original Release Date: 2000
- Main Character: Inuyasha
Recently, several works by renowned manga artist Rumiko Takahashi have been revisited with new remakes. Most notably, her popular series Ranma 1/2 has been updated with a modern remake and is continuing with new anime seasons.
The recent remake of Ranma 1/2 has brought the series back into the spotlight after years of being relatively unknown. This success makes a remake of Rumiko Takahashi’s other hit, Inuyasha, a great idea. Inuyasha is a classic isekai story that people still enjoy and discuss today, even in 2026. A modern remake could revitalize the series and attract a new generation of fans.
