In simpler terms, racing games revolve around being the one to reach the end point ahead of everyone else, no matter what strategies or tactics are used. To put it another way, success in these games is still success, regardless of how it’s achieved.
If you’d like to celebrate a shared victory with a friend, your choices might seem scarce if you’re aiming for the top two spots. But remember, “limited” doesn’t necessarily mean “nonexistent”.
If you’re on the hunt for an exceptional cooperative racing game, you might need to explore beyond your typical go-to options. However, I’ve got a list of top picks that might even include games you hadn’t thought of before!
8. Team Sonic Racing
The Blue Bolt Is Faster Behind The Wheel
The racing game titled Team Sonic Racing might not be as well-known as Mario Kart, yet it offers an exceptional racing experience reminiscent of a fantasy world, filled with numerous references to the beloved Sonic platformer series.
In this exciting game, you have the opportunity to join the Grand Prix with your teammates. These aren’t just ordinary tournaments, they’re compact series of races that take place across various tracks. To emerge victorious, you and your team need to perform exceptionally well. It’s a fantastic method to introduce a team aspect into the gameplay, and if you coordinate effectively as a trio, you can even compete as a three-person squad (3-stack). The competition places a significant emphasis on skillfully drifting through corners, but the gaming experience stands out from other popular kart racers due to its unique feel.
In the “Team Adventure” mode, you can enjoy playing together locally with your group. Many features are specifically tailored for teamwork, such as Slingshotting (or drafting) and Skimboosting, which allows you to speed past a slower team member to provide them an extra boost.
7. Trackmania Turbo
Where Friendships Go To Die

Games such as Overcooked are well-known for straining friendships, and Trackmania Turbo can certainly be included in that category too.
Trackmania Turbo presents an unusual spin on cooperative gameplay, making it an intriguing choice for console gamers since it’s complimentary for PS Plus Extra members. The unique “Double Driver mode” lets two players share control of a single vehicle, with the game harmonizing both inputs. If you play with someone unsuitable, it could lead to heated exchanges; however, consider it as a fun and entertaining experience, as there’s much to appreciate in
The unconventional layout of Trackmania Turbo is perfect for gaming with less experienced teammates, and its abundance of tracks ensures that you can play for extended periods without ever repeating the same course.
6. WRC 10
A Unique Co-Op Experience

In an unexpected turn, rally racing isn’t typically associated with cooperative gameplay, but WRC 10 offers one of the most innovative approaches to teamwork that I’ve encountered within this gaming genre.
Rally drivers are essentially sightless without their co-drivers providing constant directions and corner details through their headphones, and this is exactly how playing together with a friend works too.
In this scenario, one person is in control of driving the vehicle while the other provides directions and alerts about road conditions from the passenger side. The co-driver needs to stay synchronized with the prompts to maintain a steady stream of information, and it can be challenging to coordinate instructions with your friend’s driving speed.
5. Need for Speed Unbound
The Latest In The Series

Need for Speed Unbound has sparked mixed reactions within the street racing series due to its unique visual style, which features cel-shaded effects, a choice that some find appealing while others may not connect with it. Personally, I appreciate the visuals, but I can certainly see why they don’t appeal to everyone.
If you’re looking for cooperative racing, I hope you can handle it since Unbound employs a collaborative system with its “Linkups.” During a Linkup event, a section of the map turns green. Join that area, and you can engage in team-oriented tasks where you strive for a mutual objective.
Some goals are quite enjoyable, such as outmaneuvering fellow racers, and Linkups can be challenging because the police relentlessly pursue you.
The primary limitation of Linkups is that they only manifest in the open world, implying that you don’t have control over when to engage. Given this, Unbound provides an acceptable cooperative mode, but it may not be something you and your friends can consistently synchronize for play.
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
The Kart Racing King

It’s widely agreed that Mario Kart 8 stands out as one of the top-tier go-kart racing games currently available, and its quality is further enhanced by the addition of the Booster Course Pass.
The best thing about “Mario Kart 8” is that it can be played with friends in various ways, not just head-to-head racing. The game features a mode called “Teams Mode,” which allows you to team up with another player and combine your scores. This makes it possible for less skilled players to enjoy the game alongside more experienced ones. Additionally, there are almost 100 tracks in the game, including the Booster Course, so you’ll have plenty of fun racing on them all. It may take days to complete them all!
There’s also a decent battle mode you can enjoy co-op if you want a break from traditional racing.
Watch out, friendly fire has been activated. So, be mindful of your teammates before you unleash a volley of Koopa shells along the roadway.
3. Horizon Chase Turbo
A Glorious Retro Throwback

If you appreciate timeless classics such as Outrun or vintage titles like Lotus Turbo Challenge, then you’re sure to love Horizon Chase Turbo.
This underrated racing gem openly showcases its retro influences yet offers enough contemporary elements to captivate novice players. Horizon Chase Turbo earns a spot on our list due to its cooperative split-screen campaign. It resembles the solo World Tour mode, where you compete in visually stunning locations worldwide, with races becoming progressively tougher as you advance.
As a fan, I’m thrilled about the updated scoring system in Horizon Chase Turbo that considers multiple players. It’s even more exciting because you can take on Endurance mode as a team. The only downside is that cooperative play is currently limited to a local split-screen setup, which means we can’t race together online just yet.
2. Forza Horizon 5
The AAA choice

In simpler terms, “Forza Horizon 5” is a captivating automobile-racing video game that often graces various top lists due to its numerous well-executed aspects.
In Forza Horizon 5, you’ll find a multitude of detailed racing genres and gameplay modes. What makes it even better is that you can experience vast parts of the game in cooperative play, even during the storyline. Collaborative missions can be completed with up to 5 other players at once, and all participants receive rewards, regardless of their final position.
In the game ‘Forza Horizon 5’, Playground Games effectively integrates cooperative play in a smooth manner, ensuring that any advancements you achieve are carried over to your single-player experience and vice versa. If you’re seeking stunning visuals, authentic vehicles, and an abundance of game modes due to the upgraded ‘Event Lab 2.0’,
1. CarX Drift Racing Online
A Different Kind Of Skill

As a devoted gaming enthusiast, there’s something about CarX Drift Racing Online that really captures my heart. It’s more than just a drift racing simulator; it’s a one-of-a-kind experience with game modes that set it apart from other titles in the genre.
One option is particularly suited for cooperative play and works significantly better when playing with a companion rather than strangers. In the game CarX, players can engage in “Tandem Races” where the goal is to drive alongside a friend and maintain your vehicles as closely coordinated as possible.
In this game, CarX Tandem Racing, you are given higher scores for precise driving, such as daring drifts around corners, and the top ranks are saved for teams who can skillfully maneuver their cars close together, almost scraping each other. However, it’s important to note that colliding with another car in this game won’t earn you any points. Despite this challenge, CarX Tandem Racing offers a challenging yet enjoyable experience as it requires a high level of mastery to excel.
