8 Best Free-to-Play Open World Games

It’s often said that the best things in life are free, but realistically, everything comes at a cost. We believe the saying is true – you can find happiness without spending money, and it’s the skeptics who are mistaken.

Free-to-play games can be a bit harder to discover, but there are always hidden gems worth checking out, and that includes surprisingly good open-world titles.

Surprisingly, many games offer huge, explorable worlds without costing a penny. Unlike typical open-world games, these don’t require you to pay to play.

If you enjoy exploring vast, open-world games but are on a tight budget, these games are a great way to satisfy that craving.

8. Skate

Shred The Gnar!

Even though Skate is still being developed and feels a bit too polished and commercial for some, it’s a surprisingly good option, especially considering it’s free to play.

Although it doesn’t quite reach the same incredible level as the original games, the gameplay is remarkably similar, featuring smooth skating, impressive parkour moves, and exciting street locations that any skater would appreciate.

Skating around San Van is a lot of fun! You can hang out with other skaters and find creative ways to use the environment to perform cool tricks and routes.

It’s not quite ready yet, but feel free to check on its progress. Grab a new skateboard, give it a try, and go wild – all in the name of style! Amen.

7. Wuthering Waves

Ride That Gacha Wave

If you’ve spent a lot of time playing Genshin Impact and are looking for a similar game that still feels fresh and new, you should definitely give Wuthering Waves a try.

Although not developed by Hoyoverse, this game shares a similar style – it features anime-inspired graphics and exploration reminiscent of Breath of the Wild. However, it offers a deeper and more complex experience for players who enjoy fast-paced, real-time battles.

This game relies much more on player skill, requiring you to learn how to dodge, block attacks, and use the unique ‘echo’ system to succeed. Moving around the world is also faster, smoother, and more enjoyable, so exploring doesn’t feel tedious.

While it doesn’t quite reach the level of storytelling found in Genshin Impact, this game is a great choice if you’re looking for a Gacha game that’s more complex and offers a good challenge.

6. Blue Protocol: Star Resonance

Flavor of the Month

I thought Skate was the new free-to-play skateboarding game, but wow, I was wrong! This one actually came out even more recently – it’s super new!

Let’s be honest, this isn’t one of the best gacha games out there. We’re including it simply because it’s new and popular right now. However, it does have some redeeming qualities.

The game boasts stunning graphics and a fantastic soundtrack. The combat is immediately enjoyable, and the social features truly showcase the game’s strengths – often more effectively than playing alone.

Okay, so it might not be an instant hit with everyone, and it could take some time for people to really get it. But honestly, I think this has serious potential, and I’m excited to be able to check it out early! It feels like we’re getting in on something special right from the start.

5. Once Human

Stardust or Bust

Honestly, I used to think all open-world survival games were starting to feel the same. You know, build a base, gather stuff, fight monsters… and then deal with other players who are usually more annoying than anything else in the game world! I was getting a little burnt out on the formula.

Everything people are saying about Once Human is accurate. However, what really makes it stand out is that it’s free to play. Plus, the game boasts a huge and fun-to-explore world, combat similar to The Division, and challenging survival mechanics that keep things interesting.

The initial excitement has faded, leaving a dedicated player base. But if you continue playing, especially in offline mode, you’ll still find a really fun and expansive free-to-play survival experience – one of the best out there.

4. Palia

Cozy, Not Costly

Ever imagined combining the cozy vibes of Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley with the open-world exploration of Breath of the Wild? If so, Palia is the game for you – it’s a delightful mix of all three!

This MMO offers a relaxing and charming experience, letting you focus on peaceful activities like farming, fishing, and building friendships instead of intense action. It’s a more laid-back and heartwarming game compared to other online adventures.

Also, this game was made by the team at PocketPair before they created the hugely popular Palworld, meaning it’s built on a solid foundation of game development experience.

Palia is a game that rewards effort – the more you invest, the more you’ll get out of it. If you’re looking to build a fulfilling second life and are willing to work at it, you’ll find Palia is incredibly engaging and can easily absorb hours of your time.

3. Infinity Nikki

A Passion For Fashion

So, you’ve probably noticed a lot of open world games are also gacha games these days. And honestly, there are tons trying to be the next Genshin Impact. But out of all of them, Infinity Nikki really stands out to me as something different.

Imagine a relaxing, open-world game similar to other ‘gacha’ titles, but focused on exploration and puzzle-solving rather than battles. While fighting isn’t a big part of the experience, collecting and customizing outfits is a major highlight.

In this game, how you improve, what you can do, and how others see you all depend on your character’s gear. And you’ll have plenty of options to customize your appearance and really express yourself through what you wear.

This game is a charming and stylish ‘Gacha’ experience, perfect for players who prefer a relaxing atmosphere over intense action. Despite the gentle pace, it’s full of delightful surprises, and a great choice if you’re looking to collect new outfits and accessories.

2. Throne and Liberty

A Free RPG? In This Economy?

I was a little worried about Throne and Liberty after hearing how things were going with New World, another game from Amazon. But honestly, this one is great! It’s a really fun RPG, and the best part is, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to enjoy it.

Throne and Liberty offers a classic MMORPG experience with a lot of freedom. You can switch between any class you want, team up with friends in guilds and alliances, and explore a huge, beautiful open world at your own speed.

The game is also really fun to move around in, has deep character progression, offers varied and engaging combat, and surprisingly, tells a pretty compelling story – better than you’d expect from a game of this type.

It’s still unclear if Amazon will continue to invest in this game for the long haul, address issues to keep players engaged, and provide ongoing support – something that was lacking with their game New World. However, it seems like a good time to give it a try, at least for now.

1. Genshin Impact

Mute Paimon & It’s A Wonderful Time

I wasn’t expecting much from Genshin Impact, to be honest. I initially thought it was just copying Breath of the Wild, and figured I’d try it out briefly before moving on to something else.

And then, surprisingly, 150 hours had passed, and I was still lost in the world of Teyvat, perfecting my character, collecting resources, and hoping for lucky character draws with my in-game currency.

Honestly, this game isn’t just fun to play – it’s seriously addictive! But beyond that, the world they’ve created is absolutely beautiful and huge, and I really connected with all the unique characters you meet in each area. I went in expecting just a simple game, but the story actually pulled me in and kept me hooked!

I wasn’t expecting much from this game, but it’s incredibly popular for good reason. Even if you’re just discovering it now, I highly recommend giving it a try.
