While crossplay feels like a recent addition to gaming, it’s actually been around for quite a while. A notable early example is *Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001*, released in 2001. Players on the PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast could compete against each other, and the game was even advertised with memorable magazine ads highlighting this feature.
A popular current example is *Call of Duty: Black Ops 6*, and there are many other games that let you play with friends on different consoles. But what about role-playing games – do any of those offer that same crossplay feature? Let’s take a look for RPG fans who want to play with friends on various platforms.
Borderlands 4
Millions Of Guns Are Waiting
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Two Local/Four Online
Borderlands 4 lets you team up with friends no matter what system they’re using, offering crossplay between consoles and PC. It also stands out by still including local split-screen co-op, letting you play with friends on the same couch. Up to four players can join the campaign, and you can even disable crossplay if you prefer.
Players can choose from four different characters and discover a huge arsenal of weapons in *Borderlands 4*. The game’s expansive open world will offer plenty to explore, and a new feature lets players replay missions – something the *Borderlands* series hasn’t offered before.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Enjoy Some Meat Together
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Four Online
In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, you can now enjoy the game even if you prefer to play solo, thanks to helpful AI companions. However, playing with others is still a fantastic experience! Up to four players can team up online to tackle the main story, side quests, or simply explore the game world together, regardless of whether they’re on PlayStation or PC. You can also turn off crossplay in the game’s co-op settings if you prefer.
A major update is that the game now features a completely open world, letting players freely roam the entire map on their Seikret mount, even just to explore. Players can also select from fourteen different weapons, become skilled with their chosen weapon, craft new equipment using materials from defeated monsters, and continue the cycle of improvement.
Diablo 4
Face Evil Across All Consoles
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Two Local/Four Online
I’ve been playing *Diablo 4*, and it’s really gone all-in on the open world thing – it’s huge, even looking down from above! The classes feel classic *Diablo*, you’ve got your Rogues, Sorcerers, and all that. It’s awesome for playing with a friend on the same couch, but honestly, a good group with different classes online is where it really shines strategically.
With a lot of different platforms to play on – including PC – it’s easier than ever to connect with others. Logging into Battle.net helps streamline those connections. While the story in *Diablo 4* is better than ever, the game is still best enjoyed teaming up with friends to explore dungeons and collect loot. You can still have fun playing by yourself, and the difficulty level is adjustable to suit your preferences.
Destiny 2
Prepare To Strike
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Three-Six Online
Since its release in 2017, *Destiny 2* has changed quite a bit. It originally launched as a full-priced game with downloadable content you had to pay for, but now it’s free to play. When playing with others, not every mission lets you team up with the same number of people. Strikes usually support teams of three, and most Raids are designed for six players.
Strikes are the most recognizable missions in the *Destiny* series. While crossplay allows players on all consoles and PC to play together, there’s a limitation. When playing story missions or Strikes, everyone is matched up together. But in competitive multiplayer, console players will only compete against each other, and PC players will be in a separate group.
Baldur’s Gate 3
A Tactical Squad
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Two Local/Four Online
Okay, so I’m totally hooked on Baldur’s Gate 3. What’s amazing is how much choice you get – it’s not just about picking a race or class at the start, but making decisions *throughout* the whole game. Honestly, that’s what’s going to keep me coming back for more. I’m already planning my next playthrough, because I want to see how different choices change everything. It’s a game you can really replay from a bunch of different perspectives!
You can even play *Baldur’s Gate 3* with friends, and it’s not a fast-paced experience because it’s a turn-based RPG. This slower speed might appeal to some players, and everyone gets to control their own character during combat. To play across consoles and PC, you’ll need to register an account with Larian.
Final Fantasy 14
A Massive Grouping
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Four-Eight Online (For Most Parties)
Final Fantasy 14 is the newest online role-playing game in the Final Fantasy series. Like most games in this style, it’s designed to be enjoyed with other players. While the main story can be played alone, there are lots of cooperative activities available that bring together different sized groups.
Just wandering around the game world and joining forces with other players to battle monsters and huge bosses can be really enjoyable. However, *Final Fantasy 14* is a game that takes a lot of time and commitment – it’s best suited for players who are truly dedicated. Crossplay will allow players on different platforms to play together using their Square Enix account, except for those still using the PS3, which is no longer supported.
Outriders
Get Those Magical Guns Up
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Three Online
Outriders is a surprisingly good co-op game that didn’t get the attention it deserved when it launched in 2021. Like Destiny 2, it lets up to three players team up, and you can play through the entire campaign on all platforms – even older ones like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Players can easily enable or disable crossplay in the game’s settings.
The game features four different classes. Pyromancers are a popular choice, letting you combine fire-based abilities with your weapons. Technomancers offer a lot of helpful gadgets, and ultimately, each class brings something unique to a cooperative team.
Palworld
Train Together
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Four Online
Although still in development, the game *Palworld* received an update in 2025 that allows players on different systems to play together. Normally, up to four players can team up and explore the game world, but those who set up their own servers can host much larger campaigns with up to 32 players – though that might be more than most people need!
Okay, so in *Palworld*, you basically catch these creatures called Pals, and then you train them up. You can make them battle for you, or even help out with stuff around your base – it’s a really cool mix of monster-catching RPG and life simulation. And honestly, playing with friends online makes even the boring stuff, like farming, way more fun!
