8 Best Users of Sun Powers In Anime

I’m a huge anime fan, and I’ve noticed fire powers are everywhere! But what really gets me excited are characters connected to the sun itself. Over time, these sun-powered characters have become legendary – their abilities are just visually incredible and so powerful. It’s amazing how many creators have drawn inspiration from the sun. Some, like Escanor, literally harness its energy, while others, like Luffy when he’s embodying the Sun God in One Piece, represent the sun’s power and spirit in a really cool, symbolic way.

Apollo

  • Anime: Record of Ragnarok

I’m a huge fan of Record of Ragnarok, and one of the coolest fighters has to be Apollo, the Greek Sun God! He faced off against Leonidas in the ninth round, and it was incredible. As you’d expect, Apollo’s powers are all about the sun, but instead of fire, he manipulates light – it’s a really unique take! His ultimate move, Embrace of the Eternal Midnight Sun, just unleashes everything he’s got. It was seriously powerful, and he actually won the fight – a fantastic battle to watch!

Tanjiro Kamado

  • Anime: Demon Slayer

Tanjiro is a hugely popular character in modern anime, largely thanks to his role as the main character in Demon Slayer. He first learned to fight using Water Breathing, a relatively simple and common technique. However, he eventually discovered his true strength lay in Hinokami Kagura, which would later be recognized as Sun Breathing.

The Kamado family preserved the Sun Breathing technique, which is widely considered the most powerful Breathing Style in Demon Slayer. Because demons are vulnerable to sunlight, this technique is incredibly effective and causes wounds that are difficult to heal. Tanjiro developed a thirteenth form of Sun Breathing specifically to fight Muzan.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni

  • Anime: Demon Slayer

Tanjiro mastered Sun Breathing, but he didn’t create it. The original creator of Sun Breathing – and all Breathing Techniques – was a man named Yoriichi. Considered the strongest character in Demon Slayer, Yoriichi was powerful enough to defeat Muzan, the leader of the demons.

Muzan was so afraid of this man that he stayed hidden until he died of old age. Yoriichi is considered the most powerful Sun Breathing user in the series, and no one has ever surpassed him in strength.

Joseph Joestar

  • Anime: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

In JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, the characters’ powers evolved over time. While Stands are the most well-known ability, the series originally featured a power system called Hamon. Hamon users learn to harness the energy of the sun through intense training. Though many characters use Hamon, particularly in the first two parts of the series, Joseph Joestar, the hero of Part 2, is arguably its most famous practitioner.

Joseph Joestar demonstrated masterful control of Hamon during his battle with the Pillar Man, and he continued to effectively use this ability on several occasions throughout Part 3 of the story.

Feitan Portor

  • Anime: Hunter x Hunter

Even though Feitan doesn’t always have a central role in the Hunter x Hunter series, he’s a popular character among fans. He’s consistently shown to be incredibly powerful, largely thanks to his Nen ability called Pain Packer, which lets him absorb damage as he fights.

After taking significant damage, Feitan can transform his Nen into a powerful ability called Rising Sun. This allows him to create a huge, fiery sun with his aura, capable of incinerating anything it touches. He demonstrated this devastating technique during his fight with Zazan, completely burning her. Fans are eagerly anticipating another chance to see Feitan’s abilities showcased in the Hunter x Hunter manga.

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto

  • Anime: Bleach

Yamamoto, a central figure in the Bleach series, is widely considered one of the franchise’s most powerful characters. As the leader of the first division of the Gotei 13, he’s renowned as an exceptionally skilled swordsman and a master of fire-based abilities, making him a truly iconic character in the anime world.

Yamamoto is known for his powerful fire-based abilities, including Jōkaku Enjō and Ennetsu Jigoku. However, his true claim to fame, and what makes him so popular among anime fans, is his Bankai, Zanka no Tachi. This ability lets him generate heat like the sun itself. Yamamoto’s powers are incredibly memorable, and it’s easy to understand why his Bankai is a favorite among viewers – it truly makes him one of the strongest fire-based characters in anime.

Monkey D. Luffy

  • Anime: One Piece

Monkey D. Luffy is the main character in the One Piece series. For a long time, fans believed his ability to stretch like rubber came from a Devil Fruit called the Gomu Gomu no Mi. But during the Wano arc, it was revealed that everything fans thought they knew about Luffy’s powers was a lie created by the World Government.

Luffy’s Devil Fruit, the Gomu Gomu no Mi, is actually a Mythical Zoan type called the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. Awakening this fruit gives Luffy the powers of Nika, the Sun God in the world of One Piece. Although Luffy doesn’t directly control sunlight, he’s still considered the Sun God and can use a special ability called Drums of Liberation to channel energy.

Escanor

  • Anime: Seven Deadly Sins

Escanor, known as the Lion’s Sin of Pride, is one of the Seven Deadly Sins and is often considered its most powerful member when at his peak. He first appeared in the anime’s second season and immediately stood out as being incredibly strong. However, Escanor is very weak at night, which led many people to underestimate him when they first met him.

Escanor is incredibly weak at night, but becomes immensely powerful as the sun rises. His Sunshine ability allowed him to easily defeat both Galand and Melascula. He reaches his absolute peak strength at noon, when the sun is strongest, transforming into ‘The One’ and becoming nearly unbeatable. He’s arguably the most famous character who draws power from the sun, and has become one of the most beloved characters in 7DS, even surpassing the popularity of the main character, Meliodas.
