The core of any good action video game is its combat. It needs to be enjoyable, quick, and easy to pick up, but more importantly, it should feel great to play. This applies to any game that focuses on fighting, no matter the type of game – whether it’s a first-person shooter, a ‘one versus many’ style game, or a fast-paced action title.
Many game developers have created incredibly rewarding combat experiences. These games, featuring complex systems, smooth controls, challenging bosses, and a wide range of weapons and skills, are ideal for players who prioritize satisfying and engaging battles.
“Satisfying” does not have to mean complex combat.
Kingdom Hearts 2
Much More Than A Whimsical Disney Crossover
The Kingdom Hearts series is famous for its unusual yet charming blend of Disney and Final Fantasy characters. But its success isn’t just about that crossover appeal. The games’ fast-paced action RPG gameplay has also made them popular around the world, and many fans consider Kingdom Hearts 2 to have the best combat system of all the titles.
Okay, so playing Kingdom Hearts 2 is a huge step up from the first game – Sora is way faster and more responsive. Seriously, landing those Keyblade attacks just feels amazing, and I can easily lose hours just battling enemies. What really keeps things fresh are the Reaction Commands, especially when you’re up against a tough boss. Plus, there’s a lot more going on under the hood than you might think – stuff like knockback and revenge values. It’s cool because it’s created a whole community of people trying to beat the game as fast as possible, and I can see why – it’s addictive!
No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
Wield Two Beam Katanas With Motion Controls
The No More Heroes games were memorable on the Nintendo Wii, not just for their over-the-top violence, but also for their innovative combat. Players could defeat enemies using the Wii’s motion controls, which was a unique feature at the time. While the first game was excellent, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle really upped the ante with even more intense action.
In No More Heroes 2, players control Travis Touchdown, who can now dual-wield Beam Katanas. Executing finishing moves involves wildly swinging both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, which might take some getting used to, but feels fantastic once mastered. Paired with Travis’s new, over-the-top wrestling techniques, it creates a truly unique and memorable action game.
God Of War 3
Kratos’ Original Trilogy Ended On A High Note
Although the newer God of War games tell a better story and look and play better than the original Greek mythology trilogy, the combat isn’t quite as good. The first three God of War games all had great fighting systems, but God of War 3 really perfected it. It felt like Santa Monica Studio had taken everything they learned from the first two PlayStation 2 games and created something truly special.
In God of War 3, Kratos is at his most enraged, and this really comes across in his brutal and aggressive combat. While using the Blades of Chaos is still incredibly satisfying, the game introduces new weapons like the Claws of Hades and Nemean Cestus, which keep the fighting fresh. Defeating massive monsters and corrupted gods through quick-time events is both incredibly violent and rewarding. The PlayStation 3’s powerful hardware lets the developers showcase all the gore with stunning realism.
Bayonetta 2
An Over-The-Top Adventure, Starring A Stylish Witch
PlatinumGames is known for creating fast-paced and polished action games. They’ve made several popular and well-received titles, including Metal Gear Rising and NieR: Automata, but many fans consider Bayonetta 2 to have their best combat system yet. The first Bayonetta game was also fun, featuring satisfying action, but the sequel improved on the formula in every way.
The combat is quick, smooth, and exciting. Bayonetta is a joy to control as she battles waves of angels, and she has a wide range of creative weapons and helpful skills. What really makes the combat special is Witch Time – a feature that briefly slows down time when you dodge attacks perfectly. It can take practice to master, but once you do, it elevates the gameplay of Bayonetta 2 to a new level of satisfaction.
DOOM
Killing Demons In The First Person Always Feels Amazing
After a twelve-year break, the classic Doom series returned in 2016 with a fantastic reboot simply called DOOM. The game was built around one main idea: letting players brutally fight hordes of demons and enjoy every moment of it. The skilled team at id Software clearly succeeded, delivering a hugely popular and satisfying experience.
Okay, so from the very first second of DOOM – when the Doom Slayer just destroys a monitor and starts blasting demons with everything he’s got – you realize it’s not like most shooters out there on consoles. Later games like Doom Eternal and Doom: The Dark Ages definitely keep the fast action and feel good to play, but they add a lot more stuff going on. Honestly, the 2016 reboot just nailed it by keeping things simple. It’s the most frantic and satisfying game in the series, in my opinion.
Devil May Cry 5
The Difficulty Is An Essential Part Of Its Outstanding Combat
The Devil May Cry series helped define and popularize fast-paced action games, but many entries are notoriously difficult, which can be frustrating for players, especially those new to the series. That’s why Devil May Cry 5 is often praised as the best installment – it’s the most approachable and easiest to pick up and enjoy.
The game remains challenging, but it’s more forgiving than previous installments, motivating players to improve by learning its smooth controls and complex combos. Once you get the hang of it, it’s clear why Devil May Cry 5 boasts one of the most refined and rewarding combat systems available. Plus, with three playable characters (expanding to four in the Special Edition), the gameplay stays fresh, as each character offers a unique fighting style, weapons, and skills.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4
One Of The Best Musou Games Is Based On A Popular Anime/Manga Series
If you enjoy quick, action-packed games that feel immediately rewarding, the Musou genre is for you. Games like Dynasty Warriors and Hyrule Warriors let you play as a strong hero and defeat huge groups of enemies very quickly. While there are many good Musou games available, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 stands out as one of the best and most refined – especially surprising since it’s based on the popular One Piece anime and manga.
The core idea behind One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is simple yet incredibly fun. Players pick a character from a huge selection – including heroes like the Straw Hat Pirates and villains like the Marine Admirals – and use their unique and powerful abilities to battle large waves of enemies. It’s easy to control, special moves are quick to execute, and the missions are fast-paced. Unsurprisingly, this game is highly addictive, and any fan of One Piece should definitely consider adding it to their library.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Two Powerful Web-Swinging Superheroes For The Price Of One
The first Marvel’s Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 is a truly exceptional superhero game. It built upon the fantastic action of the Batman: Arkham series, adapting it perfectly to Spider-Man’s abilities. The feeling of swinging through the city like Spider-Man is incredibly satisfying. The sequel, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, took things even further by adding a brilliant feature: the ability to play as two different Spider-Men.
Moving around in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 feels as great as it did in the first game, and fighting is quick, smooth, and makes you feel powerful. What really makes this game special is being able to switch between playing as Peter Parker and Miles Morales. With Peter having the symbiote suit and Miles using his Venom Blast and invisibility powers, they each offer a unique playstyle. Whether you’re stopping petty criminals or facing huge threats, it’s always enjoyable to play as either character. Plus, the quick, two-button takedowns are incredibly satisfying and provide a perfect ending to every fight.
