Summary
- PS4 offered a lower price and great features, with continuing game support post-PS5 launch.
- Arslan: The Warriors of Legend is based on anime, packed with engaging action.
- City Shrouded in Shadow is a unique survival game set in Japan with Kaiju battles.
Initially, the PlayStation 3 (PS3) was a misstep for Sony, but improvements were made over time. Compared to its competitors, the PlayStation 4 (PS4) served as a sort of apology and cost less, while offering numerous impressive features such as the controller’s Trackpad. The console boasted some of the top-tier games available and continues to receive support, which is astonishing given that the PS5 debuted in 2020.
Hey fellow gamers! There’s an endless sea of games out there, ranging from big-budget AAA titles to charming indie gems. Some truly unique ones can easily slip through the cracks. Here are some quirky finds that I think you should give a spin, even if they might seem a bit odd at first. Happy gaming!
8. Arslan: The Warriors of Legend
A Forgotten Musou And Anime
Arslan: The Warriors of Legend is a spin-off created by Koei Tecmo’s Musou team, Omega Force, that didn’t receive as much attention as other releases. It is inspired by the 2015 anime adaption, The Heroic Legend of Arslan, which itself is an adaptation of a series that began in 1986.
In the game, the anime-inspired graphics remain abundant, keeping it visually striking even after a decade. The action remains captivating, and it’s no wonder why people continue to play it. It’s also an impressive adaptation of the original anime, offering a complete narrative that leaves fans eagerly awaiting more, as there has only been one season released so far.
7. City Shrouded In Shadow
Caught In The Crossfire
One captivating concept for a survival game is titled “City Veiled in Dusk“, where players navigate a decaying Japanese city amidst epic battles between colossal creatures, such as Godzilla, and iconic heroes like Unit-01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Regrettably, this innovative idea remains exclusive to Japan.
This scenario answers long-standing questions posed by Kaiju enthusiasts, where people must urgently seek shelter while structures collapse around them. While it’s understandable why it hasn’t been adapted before due to the numerous licenses involved, Bandai Namco could manage to bring it to life if they chose to do so.
6. Dragon Quest 10 Offline
A New Version That Is Still Missing
- Developer: B.B. Studio, Square Enix
- Publisher: Square Enix
- Released: September 15th, 2022 (Japan)
- Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch
The initial game in the Dragon Quest series to transition into an MMO, titled “Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Online,” initially debuted on the Wii in 2012. Since then, it has been made available on a multitude of platforms. However, only one adaptation has been brought over to Western markets.
It’s possible that some fans might not be aware that a standalone version titled “Dragon Quest 10 Offline” was made available in 2022 across multiple platforms. This version eliminates the requirement for subscriptions, which could have potentially delayed its Western release. Unfortunately, as of now, there’s no news about it being released in the West, even in this form.
5. Everything
Everywhere All At Once
Calling “Everything” a game might be somewhat deceptive, even though it’s delightful to play within its expansive sandbox. Players will plant a seed when they enter the game, and then they can roam freely, mimicking nature itself. They can assume different life forms such as deer or wolves, all of which appear quite expressive, if not a bit quirky.
The tasks within the game can be completed, however, it’s more accurate to label it as an art project rather than a traditional game. Regardless, it’s worth giving it a try at least once.
4. Gal*Gunvolt: Burst
From Thirsty Cupids To Mega Man Platformer
- Developer: Inti Creates
- Publisher: Inti Creates
- Released: March 14, 2018
- Platform: PS4
In simple terms, “Mighty Gunvolt Burst” is a collaborative game developed by Inti Creates, merging characters from “Azure Striker Gunvolt” and “Mighty No. 9”. These games are essentially spiritual descendants of the “Mega Man” series.
Later on, the game was reintroduced as Gal*Gunvolt: Burst, enriching it with characters from another title by Inti Creates, Gal*Gun. This enhancement aimed to provide nostalgic platformer gameplay reminiscent of NES days for fans. To clarify, Gal*Gun bore similarities to an on-rails shooter and had a unique twist – a teenage boy was tasked with shooting love arrows at hysterical teenage girls chasing after him due to their infatuation.
3. Megaton Musashi
A Missed Hit From Level-5
Level-5 has been associated with numerous renowned RPG series such as several Dragon Quest games, Ni no Kuni, Dark Cloud, and more. Megaton Musashi is another one of their creations, initially launched in Japan in 2021, followed by a digital-only release in the West in 2024 under the title Megaton Musashi W: Wired.
Regrettably, the launch of this game, with its impressive pedigree from Level-5, passed mostly unnoticed. Unfortunately, it’s a pity because the quality associated with their work is evident here. The gameplay is heavily influenced by anime, allowing players to control mechs and engage in real-time combat where they can damage opponents’ metal structures.
2. Mistover: Dr. Faust’s Otherworldly Adventure
A Bizarre Tie-In With Guilty Gear
- Developer: Krafton
- Publisher: Krafton
- Released: October 10, 2019 (Base Version)
- Platforms: PC, PS4, Switch
Mistover, once available, has become so untraceable that it’s no longer possible for players to buy it, as it was taken down from all digital marketplaces in 2022. Its gameplay bore a resemblance to Darkest Dungeon, infused with an anime aesthetic. It was a challenging turn-based roguelike, offering a tough but ultimately gratifying experience.
In addition to its brief lifespan in the digital world, the game is distinguished by its downloadable content titled “Mistover: Dr. Faust’s Otherworldly Adventure“, which introduced Dr. Faust, a character from the Guilty Gear series, as a playable member in the party.
1. Venus Vacation Prism: Dead Or Alive Xtreme
The Volleyball Spinoff Is Still Alive
- Developer: Team Ninja
- Publisher: Koei Tecmo
- Released: March 27, 2025 (Japan)
- Platforms: PS4, PS5, PC
As of March 2025, “Venus Vacation Prism: Dead Or Alive Xtreme” is a relatively new game that many people might not be aware of yet. Even fans of the “Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball” series may have missed out on this third installment and its spin-offs, which came after the second game on Xbox 360.
The game titled “Venus Vacation Prism: Dead or Alive Xtreme” is primarily a dating simulation rather than a collection of mini-games. So far, it has been published in Asian countries only. Given the sequels, it seems unlikely that it will be released in Western regions soon, but unexpected events do occur sometimes.
