These days, it can be challenging to pinpoint what characteristics make a game an RPG, given the wide variety of subcategories that exist.
Others believe that Role-Playing Games (RPGs) are digital adaptations of traditional tabletop games, complete with level progression, mathematical calculations, character development, and multiple options for players to shape the storyline.
Another perspective is that some people argue that any game where you assume the role of a character can be considered a Role-Playing Game (RPG). However, this perspective seems to dilute the uniqueness of the RPG genre, as we can virtually embody characters with distinct personalities in numerous genres.
Generally speaking, there’s widespread consensus among gamers that exceptional role-playing games (RPGs) usually provide an immersive exploration experience. The joy of wandering freely, unearthing hidden treasures, stumbling upon secret dungeons, or recruiting optional characters is closely tied to the sense of fulfillment these games offer.
As a devoted gamer, I’d love to share my picks for JRPGs that provide the most immersive exploration experiences. These games are meticulously designed to ensure every moment spent is worthwhile, and they generously reward those who dare to venture off the beaten path. Instead of hurrying us straight to a showdown with the divine, they cleverly extend the storyline, keeping us engrossed for hours longer.
8. Tales of Vesperia
Grabbing All The Titles
As a gamer, I’ve got to say that while the “Tales of” series isn’t typically renowned for exploration, it certainly has its unique charm. Sure, some games in the series do offer an overworld with hidden treasures or collectibles, such as “Tales of Symphonia,” but they don’t exactly make headlines for their expansive landscapes. What truly distinguishes the “Tales of” franchise from its Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG) contemporaries is its innovative title system.
In most contemporary “Tales of” series games, the titles bestowed on characters offer advantages. These can be acquired through either the process of equipping the characters or by progressing and leveling up.
To acquire these titles, players need to engage in numerous gameplay actions including employing skills, accumulating steps, preparing meals frequently, vanquishing adversaries, unlocking treasure boxes, and performing various assignments. Essentially, these are the routine activities a player undertakes during gameplay.
In the game Tales of Vesperia, titles don’t hold much importance, but they function as guides indicating available side missions or additional tasks that players can undertake.
In some games, you get access to beauty products and special abilities, while others grant new skills or weapons. The game Vesperia incorporates a side event system, which, although easily missed, gives the world an authentic feel by providing intriguing insights into its compelling characters.
Occasionally following significant milestones, like overcoming a tough adversary or adding a new comrade, gamers might revisit earlier locations to uncover hidden side-quests. These could involve mundane tasks such as tending to a tree or assuming the role of a Dice Master. Regrettably, consulting a guide is often required to locate them all, but once found, they offer an enjoyable experience.
7. Final Fantasy VI
The World of Ruin
Exploring in Final Fantasy VI is enjoyable, but it becomes more substantial after the World of Ruin, a phase where all the characters you’ve gathered are dispersed. The process of re-recruiting them is almost entirely optional. It’s during this re-recruitment that the reward of delving deeper into Final Fantasy VI’s world unfolds.>
In older versions of “Final Fantasy”, players who were eager to explore were often rewarded with a summon concealed within a tough-to-navigate cave, or an advanced role deep within a ruin.
However, in contrast to other games, Final Fantasy VI significantly enhanced the dynamic by allowing almost every one of its fourteen potential party members to be optional. If your goal is to reach the finale as quickly as possible, you merely need to enlist the three essential characters.
If you’ve managed to gather most of the characters from “Final Fantasy VI” in the Balance World, it’s quite exciting to seek out your old companions in the World of Ruin. Additionally, there are additional storylines, weapons, and Espers to discover, adding depth to your journey.
6. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
Classics Never Get Old
In most Dragon Quest games, you’ll find expansive open environments that encourage free exploration, where you can uncover hidden treasures, acquire new items, and tackle various challenges. However, among them, the one that managed to do so in a modern fashion while preserving the classic spirit was the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
Right from the get-go, the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake offers rewards to those who delve into every nook and cranny, be it villages, dungeons, or the overall map. Gathering all the mini medals in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake or enlisting all the monsters can be tough tasks, but they are worth the effort in the end.
Furthermore, once they’ve obtained the ship, the JRPG world broadens significantly, giving players the freedom to choose their next course of action.
Modern JRPGs seldom feature such unrestrained exploration, except perhaps when they are remakes based on the original groundbreaking series within this sub-genre.
5. Xenoblade Chronicles X
A Whole Planet to Explore
In Xenoblade Chronicles X, the central focus and narrative are built around the player’s journey of discovery. After Earth has been devastated, you become a member of a colony of emigrants who are launched into space.
As I touch down on the alien world of Mira, my heart races with anticipation and purpose. My task here is twofold: to meticulously investigate this new terrain, assessing its potential for human habitation, and in doing so, uncover any sign of my fellow humans who were separated during the emergency landing of our ark. The mysteries of Mira await me, but I’m ready to face them head-on, with hope and determination in my heart.
A game centered around exploration should, as a minimum, be engaging, and fortunately, Xenoblade Chronicles X satisfies this requirement. Immediately upon leaving New Los Angeles, the world is yours to conquer, literally. If you fancy swimming towards the next region teeming with level 80 enemies, go ahead.
Indeed, while the sequence may not be perfectly logical, the essence lies in the freedom the game offers you to explore. If you’d rather stick to the traditional route, remember there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. For instance, placing scanners, battling fresh opponents, amassing valuable resources, or tackling optional missions. Each of these activities incrementally fills up the percentage of content you’ve encountered within the game.
When it seems like you can go no further, the game presents an opportunity for you to acquire Skells. These massive robots significantly enhance your ability to explore, offering unrestricted flight and serving as a stark reminder of just how small the player’s presence is within the vast world of Mira.
4. Suikoden II
108 Characters to Recruit
A key feature of the Suikoden series is the 108 characters that can be recruited, each boasting their own distinct appearance, weaponry, and potential uses both during and outside of combat.
Of course, completing this step is essential for reaching the genuine conclusion of the game. Interestingly, each Suikoden game presents this opportunity, but Suikoden II is particularly cherished by fans as their favorite within the franchise.
1998 saw the debut of Suikoden II, a time when several JRPGs utilized mechanics now perceived as outdated, such as random battles, repeated exploration, and restrictive inventories. To alleviate these issues, Suikoden introduced characters that could be recruited to the team.
As an avid gamer, I’m thrilled about the unique abilities each character offers in this game. Viki, for one, provides teleportation, essentially a quick-travel feature that streamlines my journey. Another character cuts down on random encounters or lets me effortlessly conquer weaker foes, while yet another expands my storage capacity – titles like Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes have previously showcased characters with similar abilities.
Navigating through Suikoden without a guide can be extremely tough, as quite a few characters become unobtainable if you’re not careful.
Yet, there’s a sense of fulfillment in delving into every nook and cranny of the globe, encountering diverse people, and broadening one’s circle as your network of revolutionaries continues to expand.
3. Final Fantasy XII
Open World Ivalice
In the beginning, Final Fantasy X featured exploration in Spira that was initially linear. This might have influenced Final Fantasy XII to adopt a different approach, offering a wide-open, unrestrained Ivalice instead, a concept that would later be seen in the expansive yet somewhat empty open world of Final Fantasy XV.
After the initial surprise and untimely demise from stumbling upon a dinosaur in the desert in the game ‘Final Fantasy XII’, you’ll gradually grasp the mechanics of exploration.
The monotonous task of vanquishing adversaries might appear tedious, yet occasionally, a scarcely found treasure will bestow upon you an exceptional weapon, inspiring you to track down each and every opponent.
Exploring hidden summons, tracking elusive rare game, finishing extra missions, or unlocking hidden treasure troves guarantees players who wish to explore every nook and cranny of Ivalice will never find their efforts squandered.
It would be even more effective if you customize the Gambits for an unbeatable strategy, or take advantage of the quick-play option in Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.
2. Chained Echoes
The Rewarding Reward Board
Chained Echoes” is a tribute to old-school Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPG), and despite being developed outside of Japan, it still manages to secure its spot within the genre.
The unique selling point of Chained Echoes lies in its intricate exploration mechanism, which revolves around a key component known as the Reward Board.
Immediately upon departing from the starting town, the game presents you with a Rewards Chart. This interactive tool details numerous tasks that players can accomplish within each region, including vanquishing foes, wrapping up side missions, discovering hidden treasures, and thoroughly mapping out the location.
As you finish tasks, you collect prizes. Linking together activities on the Rewards Panel creates chains, giving you progressively better rewards, including some essential for unlocking fresh character classes or expanding your skill set’s potential.
In the game Chained Echoes, the Reward System serves to encourage thorough exploration, providing subtle hints to players about potential side activities they might discover within each location, all while avoiding direct guidance or hand-holding.
Anticipate encountering infrequent adversaries, secret loot compartments, additional missions, and numerous other adventures that will add even more depth to an outstanding independent role-playing game.
1. Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed
Progression and Exploration Intertwined
Remarkably, the inclusion of an expansion on this list showcases Monolith Soft’s unwavering commitment to developing Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed.
Should Xenoblade Chronicles 3 have mastered all technical aspects showcased by its forerunners, then the DLC “Future Redeemed” served as the crowning touch, reaching its peak in terms of emphasis on exploration.
Each Xenoblade game stands out for its expansive exploration possibilities. However, previous installments didn’t offer as much in the way of character advancement. Conversely, in Future Redeemed, character growth is entirely contingent on exploration.
In this game, whatever actions you take – like opening treasures, exploring landmarks, vanquishing a certain amount of foes, or amassing collectibles – all contribute to accumulating AP (Achievement Points). These points are then channeled into the Affinity Growth system. This system, in turn, allows for the unlocking or upgrading of various Arts and Skills that benefit every member of your party.
The design of this game’s repetitive play cycle constructed an exceptional advancement mechanism within JRPG that held my interest, compelling me to delve deeper and confront adversaries I usually shied away from, as the challenges felt purposeful.
As I delved deeper into Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed and interacted more with its gameplay, it became increasingly richer and offered greater rewards, making it one of the most satisfying exploration experiences within the realm of Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs).
