The anime for Jujutsu Kaisen is back with thrilling action in the Culling Game arc, though the manga has already finished. Now that the battle against Sukuna is over, the story has wrapped up each character’s journey, allowing fans to fully appreciate how much they’ve grown and changed.
Fans of JJK can easily identify which characters truly shined and which felt underutilized by the author, Gege Akutami. It’s disappointing, especially considering the series began so strongly, to see so many characters not reach their full potential. Later on, the story didn’t give enough attention or satisfying conclusions to many characters, even some of the most important ones, and Akutami didn’t fully develop their storylines.
Yuki Tsukumo
- Sorcerer Rank: Special Grade
- Cursed Technique: Star Rage
- Domain Expansion: Yes, But Unknown
Yuki Tsukumo was a remarkably strong sorcerer, officially ranked as Special Grade. Many fans feel her potential was unfortunately squandered during the Culling Game. She didn’t have a significant role in the story, and viewers weren’t given much opportunity to see her abilities develop beyond one fight.
Yuki had a brief but impactful moment to fight Kenjaku, but tragically died during the battle. It was a shame to lose such a strong and promising character so quickly, as she had the potential to contribute a great deal to the story, and her ideals and aspirations were cut short after only a few chapters.
Tsumiki
- Sorcerer Rank: None
- Cursed Technique: None
- Domain Expansion: No
Tsumiki was Megumi’s sister and played a significant role in shaping his journey, often used by the author to motivate his actions. Sadly, she died, even though her fate was a key factor in starting the Culling Game. Many fans felt she wasn’t developed enough, only appearing briefly in flashbacks. Tsumiki and Megumi shared a touching relationship that could have added a lot to the story if she had survived.
Considering all the hardship Yuji’s sister, Megumi, faced and how desperately Yuji tried to help her, it feels like she should have lived and played a bigger role in the story. The author could have developed her character further, which would have also enriched Megumi’s own journey.
Kinji Hakari
- Sorcerer Rank: Unknown
- Cursed Technique: Private Pure Love Train
- Domain Expansion: Idle Death Gamble
Kinji Hakari was widely considered a remarkably powerful sorcerer with the potential to become one of the best of his generation, and Gojo even believed he could one day rival him. Unfortunately, Hakari never had the opportunity to fully demonstrate his abilities, particularly during the Shinjuku Showdown. Fans were disappointed that his fight against Uraume wasn’t properly shown—they barely saw any action between them. Ultimately, his potential and skills remained largely unexplored, making for an unsatisfying character arc.
Utahime
- Sorcerer Rank: Semi-Grade 1
- Cursed Technique: Solo Forbidden Area
- Domain Expansion: No
Utahime feels like an underutilized character in Jujutsu Kaisen. Currently, her most significant contribution to the story has been assisting Gojo in powering up his Hollow Purple to 200%, which kicked off his battle with Sukuna.
She didn’t contribute anything meaningful to the story, and the plot wouldn’t change at all if she were removed. This highlights how much of an opportunity the author missed with her character. Sadly, she never had a chance to truly stand out.
Mei Mei
- Sorcerer Rank: Grade 1
- Cursed Technique: Black Bird Manipulation
- Domain Expansion: No
Mei Mei is a sorcerer who, like many others, doesn’t significantly impact the overall story. However, unlike Utahime who is completely disconnected from the plot, Mei Mei does have some key moments. Despite this, fans are disappointed because she feels underutilized. Mei Mei had the potential to be a much more compelling character if the author had explored her abilities and motivations – particularly her focus on money – more fully.
Gege Akutami had the opportunity to really develop Mei Mei’s skills. In a battle-focused manga, a character’s strength is demonstrated through fighting, but Mei Mei was consistently kept on the sidelines, which ultimately weakens her as a character.
Megumi Fushiguro
- Sorcerer Rank: Grade 2
- Cursed Technique: Ten Shadows Technique
- Domain Expansion: Chimera Shadow Garden
Megumi Fushiguro is a central character in Jujutsu Kaisen, and although his storyline was generally well-written, he was possessed by Sukuna during the Culling Game arc. Sukuna maintained control over Megumi for most of that arc, effectively sidelining Megumi’s own development and goals, as he was merely a host for Sukuna, the King of Curses. Sukuna didn’t relinquish control until the very end of the story.
If Megumi had developed further after fighting Sukuna, it would have felt more meaningful, but the story concluded right then, making his journey seem ultimately unfulfilling.
Kenjaku
- Sorcerer Rank: Special Grade
- Cursed Technique: Brain Transplant, Cursed Spirit Manipulation (Geto), Antigravity (Kaori)
- Domain Expansion: Womb Profusion (Geto)
Kenjaku is a major villain in Jujutsu Kaisen. Surprisingly, he was defeated and killed during the Shinjuku Showdown arc when Yuta beheaded him with a single sword strike.
Kenjaku’s death was surprisingly anticlimactic, and many fans were disappointed that such a significant villain was defeated so quickly and seemingly without much effort. It felt like a waste of his potential as a character.
Nobara Kugisaki
- Sorcerer Rank: Grade 3
- Cursed Technique: Straw Doll Technique
- Domain Expansion: No
Nobara is arguably the most underutilized character in Jujutsu Kaisen. While initially presented as one of the series’ core trio, she consistently received less focus than Yuji and Megumi, and her role diminished further after being injured during the Shibuya Incident.
After her initial departure, Nobara didn’t reappear until the very end of the story, when she helped Yuji fight Sukuna. She’d been missing for more than half the narrative, and even her return couldn’t fix the way her character was handled. Nobara had a lot of promise, and the author could have explored her potential much further, but ultimately didn’t.
